Effects of forwarding content to another site?

Our e-commerce store is moving away from a set of products.
Instead of just redirecting these to an another section of our site, we were considering redirecting them to another site that sells the product.
I don't mind losing that traffic, but I don't want it to inadvertently hurt our other product lines.
Any thoughts on the impact of 301 redirecting a certain section of traffic to another domain? Anything I should we on the lookout for or consider?

Any time you transfer part of a site you transfer away the strength of that portion of your site. Your page count will drop, there will be some drop in visitor engagement and the number of inbound links and linking root domains will drop. I would be prepared to see negative impact on existing rankings.

One of my concerns is that I'm transferring the content to a site that we don't own. Essentially a previous competitor. I want to make sure that even though we are transferring the content related to these particular products that it would negatively impact the things I'm not transferring.
I realize there are no absolutes on things like this, but I'm trying to get a general field of where the pitfalls would be and make sure that I'm thinking it through thoroughly.
Now that you have a bit more information, anything else you might warn me about?

To reinforce EGOL's answer, I would keep in mind that the more intact a page's meaning and "experience" that is receiving the redirect, the less authority lost to a point where essentially no authority is lost.

This is commonly done by people who own multiple retail sites.
If you 301 redirect the pages to a site that is overall much stronger, the rankings of your pages might increase. If you redirect them to a weaker site, your rankings might fall.
This type of move can also change the strength of the site where they were originally. If these pages have a lot of external links pointing at them, then the value of those links will move with them to the new site. If these pages don't have a lot of links and there are a ton of these pages, then they could be like adding noncontributing weight to the site that receives them.
You will also need to do some cleaning on the old site. All of the internal links that point to these pages will need to be assessed. Some you might just delete, but there might be some opportunities to link to the site that receives these pages.
And, for customer continuity, you might want to have a posting on the original site that tells customers that you are still selling these products, but that they have been move to another website owned by your company.

Hi Moz community! I have an ongoing duplicate mystery going on here and I'm hoping someone here can answer my question. We have an Ecommerce site that has a variety of product pages and category pages. There are Rel canonicals in place, along with parameters in GWT, and there are also URL rewrites. Duplicate Content within Site
I'm very new here... been reading a lot about Panda and duplicate content. I have a main website and a mobile site (same domain - m.domain.com). I've copied the same text over to those other web pages. Is that okay? Or is that considered duplicate content?

Am I missing something if I absorb one site into another?
We are absorbing one of our sites into another and I want to make sure I am not missing anything. The site that is being absorbed will no longer exist as all the content has been replicated/duplicated on the main site. About a month ago we added canonicals to all the duplicate content to point to the new site it will be a part of. That went very well and organic traffic continued to flow to those pages on the new site. We recently (yesterday) used 301s on all the pages using mod_rewrites and redirected the domain name from the old site name to the new one. Using mod_rewrites we redirect any other page linking to that domain to www.newsite.com?ref=oldsite.com. So far I dont see anything coming in on an unexpected link. I still need to tell Google via Webmaster Tools that the oldsite is now on newsite.com correct? Is there anything else I might bump into that we havent thought of? Thanks

Time on site
From what I understand, if you search for a keyword say "blue widgets" and you click on a result, and then spend 10 seconds there, and go back to google and click on a different result google will track that first result as being not very relevant. What I don't understand is what happens when (and this happens all the time, i did it today) you click on a result go to that page, find it (not?) relevant and then get distracted, phone call, or someone calls you into another room in the office. You end up accidentally leaving the tab open all day long, and never go back to the google search. So your time on site to google is what? infinity? there must be an upper cap here? at some point they must say, ok, the user is gone, time on site = our maximum = 5 minutes?!? Get me? any insight?

.CA site same as .com site - are both necessary?
Dear Friend, We representa a major national brand in the auto care industry, and they have locations in both US and Canada. There is a primary content site at .com that we have duplicated at .ca. We are hosting the .ca site on a separate IP on a server in Canada - but by in large it is the same site. (there are some minor changes we made to change US English to Canadian English - though minor. When we search Google.ca we generally see strong search results for the .com site, but rarely, if ever any evidence of rankings for the .ca site. The .com site was launched several years ago about 18 months before the .ca site. Why doesn't Google.ca show the .ca site? Is this an issue of duplicate content, and Google.ca simply shows the .com version which it knew about first? Are we wasting our time, money and efforts having both? We use a separate site to locate local shops, and have coordinated that well with Google Places, and when looking for local auto care - we do well in both US and Canada. Different TLD's same content - duplicate content? - And a problem in foreign googles?
Hi, Operating from the Netherlands with customers troughout Europe we have for some countries the same content. In the netherlands and Belgium Dutch is spoken and in Germany and Switserland German is spoken. For these countries the same content is provided. Does Google see this as duplicate content? Could it be possible that a german customer gets the Swiss website as a search result when googling in the German Google?
