I recently had someone say a resource page is a bad idea. What do you think?

I have a resource page on my website: www.joeborders.com
an admin on the google webmaster forum said I should get rid of it. That google might look at it as spammy and gaming the system. Either that or greatly expand on it and make it more complete. I haven't updated it in a while and its far from complete. What do you think? Boot it or grow it?

Joe,
As EGOL points out, you can make an argument for either side - keep or remove. It's really up to you.
Things to consider:
- Is there a demand for this in the marketplace?
- Is your page currently ranking?
- Is the page useful to your audience? Is it visited repeatedly and for some time? Is it shared with others?
- Is there something better already out there? Can you beat it?
- You said your page is already incomplete and outdated. Are you willing to update and maintain it on an ongoing basis?
- Would you get more bang for your buck spending that time on something else?
-
In general I would guess that there aren't very many people that visit and/or use my resource page. Does that mean I should probably get rid of it?

You can pick any activity... blogging, guest posting, infographics, video, whatever... and you will find evangelists and naysayers.
In the end, it does not matter "what you do"... instead the impact is determined by how you do it and how well you do it.
I don't know anything about your business model or your clients, so I can't give good feedback on what you are doing. Only the end user who you are successful at putting your page in front of will be able to judge if you have a good product or are wasting your time.

Sitewide links from blogs we sponsor - A Bad Thing?
We sponsor a few blogs in our niche. As part of the sponsorship, they include an advert on the RHS or LHS of the blog page. Links are dofollow and are sitewide. Should I be concerned? Should I be asking for a nofollow instead, if possible? I've recently disavowed links and am waiting to see what happens with this - hopefully there's a Penguin update soon - but I wondered if the blog links were part of the problem.

Do you need a place to ditch bad links?
This is not a question as such, more a gift 🙂 I have registered a domain name to ditch bad links. For example, let's pretend I have a page on my site: www.mydomain.com/viagra and have never done any good SEO to promote this page, just a load of spammy directory links. The page used to rank for Viagra but then Google took manual action and I lost my ranking. Booo! Now the page is of no use to me until I get all these links removed and the manual action revoked. Even then, I'll be starting from scratch re-building good links to the page. Here's another option, simply re-direct the url to badlinksbin.com and say goodbye to all those spammy links. This bypasses the lengthy link removal process. Warning: I wouldn't recommend using this method if you have some good links in the mix, unless you can contact the site owners and get the links changed. And, don't forget to change the name of the url first so the Viagra page still exists on your site. As I've already set this up, I thought no harm sharing it and letting you guys use it too. I hope it helps some people.

Fake product ideas
I am going to build a fake product and wanted to get some of your awesome ideas 🙂 This is for fun, laughs and mainly viral/back links. Ultimately my goal is to leave the user scratching their head saying to them self "Is this for real?". I want it almost believable 😉 First: My site is based on everything scrabble so I want it related to that since my fans are going to get a kick out of it. I need some great starting points of something fake I can create and post about.

Are Links/Resources pages considered spam?
I'm dabbling with link building in a non link-happy industry, traffic safety (IE Traffic cones, barricades, safety vests, etc...). We currently are doing #RCS in terms of giveaways for college students as well as discounts in a wider EDU Outreach campaign as well as legitimate guest posting. I have started to use Link Prospector, and got a list of links/resources pages that we can get info from. I found some great links through here, including ways to get links from higher-profile .gov domains, but was wondering if it is worth it to go after the high(er) quality links/resources pages. By higher quality, I usually set a floor of a DA 25-30 and have a limited amount of external links per page. These would be for branded keywords (IE the company name/domain) and not exact match anchor text. I'd really like to see how other SEOs feel about this. Hello, in our site www.mycarhelpline.com - we have just reworked on header and footer links. Have removed lost of unncessary footer links. However, the header links on extreme top right side has some links like - login, register, about us, partner with us etc. Is is that google will give importance to these links and i rather should move them to footer links of page and should move the most important anchor links on the top header. Pl suggest

How do I remove bad web directory listings?
I am starting SEO for an E commerce website. I guess like 1 year or two ago they had another SEO company working for them. After looking in Site explorer I realized that they have like 2000 links (almost all from website directories) that have the correct anchor text but are all in the wrong categories, and most from countries like china and india. Many of the Titles are even in Chinese. This company sells packaging supplies and they are in categories like real estate, animals, and so on. I am changing the domain name, so I guess any links to internal pages will be lost, however I have to forward the main domain to my new domain, so any links to the home page will still be there. Does anyone know how I can remove these links??

Building separate pages for local searches
I found one of our competitors developed URLs for every state in the US. They linked all these sites back to their site and they are ranking very high for each of these states. Here are 2 examples http://metalbuildingsmississippi.com/ #1 for "metal buildins mississippi" http://metalbuildingsoklahoma.com/ #3 for "metal buildings oklahoma" these pages don't even have a PR. Would you recommend doing the same with my site, writing unique content for each URL and building links?
