Redirect one store to another...
-
Here's the situation: 2 online stores. Store A is doing really well, traffic, sales, and keyword ranking wise. Store B, not so much. Owner wants to redirect all links from store B to store A and then possibly re-brand store A and give it a different URL.
This is a slow time, sales pick up in spring. I would like opinions on this from anyone who has done this or knows about it. Risks, benefits, best practices on going about it, etc...
Thank you,
Lisa

Sometimes things seem so confusing but yet they are extremely simple. Thank you, you've helped

Hi,
So you want to add all the items from Store B to A then redirect B pages to the A pages. Then rebrand, create a new website and redirect A to the new site? It works and Google willl follow those 301s. But then things might get confusing in the future. Furthermore, if you keep redirecting, there will be a certain point where Google will stop crawling as noted in the artcile linked above. Furthermore, it will delay crawl time.
Instead of redirecting to A then redirect again. Why don't you rebrand first, then redirect from Store A and B to the new site. Then there will only be one redirection Google and other search engines need to follow. Furthermore, you will have less 301s to manage.
Hope this helps.

To make this easier:
I want to remove all items in buyoutdoorsheds.com (store B) and place them into budgetpackaging.com (Store A), then 301 the links to the same items in budgetpackaging.
Also thinking of a brand change for budgetpackaging. Either 301 Items from budgetpackaging.com to buyoutdoorsheds.com or 301 them to a different URL. Everything will still be working out of the now called budgetpackaging.com. did you get that LOL.
Bascially, use the URL from buyoutdoor and use the temple or website of budgetpackaging.com. Just want to get rid of “budgetpackaging” and use something more relevant.

Yes they both sell outdoor storage sheds.I really appreciate your insight on this. What about re-branding and changing the URL of Store A once all redirects take place?

Before answering, there is some info that needs confirmation. Does Store A and B sell the same or similar products? Why?
If both stores sell different products, then you redirect store B's traffic to store A, then your bounce rate will increase dramatically since people want to buy store B's product but got directed to A which is different.
However, if they sell the same products, then it is definitely do-able. The best pracitce is that you should use 301 redirect on each page of store B website and redirect them to store A's pages that sell the same product. You want to direct people from viewing store B item 1 to store A item 1. Here is an article about Matt Cutts explanation on 301 redirects. http://www.mktdojo.com/matt-cutts-discusses-301-redirect-limits You don't want to redirect people to store A's home page when they want to check out a specific item. You should direct them to a similar page in Store A.
As for Risk and benefits, when you use 301 redirect, it won't transfer ALL link juice and authority but probably 99%. Another risk may be it will take Google longer to follow the 301 redirects and crawling speed. Some people might get confused, they want to visit store B but got directed to store A.

Redirect inbound links to youtube?
I have a website that's been going for 10 years or so, doesn't get huge traffic but it's fairly consistent. About 5 years ago I put the same content on youtube- instructional how to videos. The website offers slightly better content because there are images to accompany the step by step text below the videos. The text is more or less the same on youtube and my website. Recently, youtube has started to vastly out-perform my website. For every page/video on my website, there is a youtube page. They're basically competing against each other. Over the years I have accrued a fair number of links to my website. My question is, should I redirect my inbound links to the relevant youtube pages and sacrifice my website? Thanks! Will

Best practice to redirect all 404s?
Hey is it best practice to redirect all 404 pages. For example if the 404 pages had 0 traffic and no links why would you need to redirect that page? Isn't it best practice just to leave as a 404? Cheers.

How would I be able to move content from one domain to another?
I have a client that wants to migrate some of his site's content to a new domain, not all of the content, just some of it. This is not an address change. He wants to continue actively using the domain name where all this content currently resides, so it's not a matter of notifying search engines of an address change. The first thing that comes to mind is the use of the canonical tag, but it's not making sense. Any recommendations? Thanks in advance.

What is the best: one big site or several small ones?
Sometimes I've felt that my choice was incorrect. I know taht with a big amount of content on the same subject a bigger one is better: it’s easier to maintain, and a big number of pages is good for Google ranking, but when you have many small sites, each one focusing on a totally different subject, you can crosslink them and this will improve your rankings. Furthermore, many small sites allow you to focus in specific niches and help you rank better for different keywords. So, what is the best choice?

Login redirect 302
Ok - anyone knows what to do with the temporary redirect to the login page? In our e-commerce system we have a checkout page, which requires user to be logged in - if they are not, we redirect them to the login page using simple php header("Locaiton: url"). This however has been found as a Warning as it's a temporary redirect. I can't really put there permanent redirect for obvious reasons so if someone could give me some clue on this situation that would be much appreciated.

My site penalized after 301 Redirect or redesign?
Hi, I have a question regarding my site (http://www.pokeronlineitalia.com) that has, all of a sudden, lost rankings on several keywords; plus, Google Analytics and the plug-in Clicky installed on my site (the site is built on WordPress) claim that my site has no visitors/visits anymore. I would like to provide a little background of what has happened. Three weeks ago I asked my web hosting company to do a 301 redirect from http://pokeronlineitalia.com to http://www.pokeronlineitalia.com. At the same time I asked a web hosting company to to a redesign of the site. Strangely, the day after the new redesigned site went online Google Analytics and the Clicky plug-in showed that my site, from one day to the other, had no visitors/visits anymore (I had installed Google Analytics and Clicky before the 301 redirect). In addition, I noticed that I had lost positions on many keywords for which I used to rank on the second page. However, the PR of the site has remained intact and Google is indexing it without problems. Plus, I still rank high for a keyword. I tend to believe that because of this, my site was not penalized by mighty Google...but I'd like an SEO expert to tell me what he thinks about it. In particular, please answer this: has my site lost rankings because of the 301 redirect? Has my site been penalized because of the redesign? Is this only a temporary situation? Thank you very much for your help. Sal
