Can we discuss Moz's Forecast? It's been over 100 degrees for a month.
-
Hey everyone!
I just wanted to start a discussion on Moz's Forecast. If you haven't noticed, it has been over 100 degrees for an entire month now, which I have personally never seen before...
Why do you think this might be happening? Any ideas or theories? I'd love to hear them!

Thanks for this update, Pete!

The public metric is "absolute" in the sense that it's not relative to surrounding days. We have other metrics (not published) that are various types of moving averages, but I've found that most of them over-smoothed. Given the new normal lately, though, it may be time to revisit them.
-
Are you normalizing it somehow? As some of the other charts that are available are showing increases too but not on a daily basis anymore. At some point the new reality should become the baseline right?
-
Unfortunately, we are seeing a rate of change that won't seem to settle down. It's not clear if this is the new normal, so to speak, or if something about how we collect the data is creating more noise. There are no errors of the obvious sort (or the sort we've encountered in the past), so it's been hard to pin down. I'm hoping to know more soon.
Truthfully, I'm toying with the idea of going with our larger, but less frequently updated, data set, and focus more on things like SERP feature changes, HTTPS, etc. At this point in Google's evolution, I'm not sure how useful day-over-day flux is. The original goal was to help use flux to pinpoint what changed, but the reality is that -- while I can tell you which keywords or categories changed the most -- using that data to interpret how the algorithm moved is nearly impossible. There are just too many things changing every day, even outside of the algorithm. So, I'm actively pondering if the current role of the tool is useful in 2017.
-
I wonder if Dr. Pete is able to share a bit more about where the changes are happening. The fact that a lot of SERPS are continually changing isn't that new. Probably part of some personalization and a lot of refreshments for maybe lower rankings. It would be interesting to know a bit more about the characteristics instead of just seeing that it's 107 degrees today.

A competitor's SEO firm is building spammy links to my website.
A competitor's SEO firm is building spammy links to my website. I know the disavow link process, but even this can be time consuming. Is there a better way to protect my website? Any and all ideas appreciated.... Are there any cool Moz tools that can help me manage this assault? Sorry, just a follow up from me... It appears that many of the spammy links (referrals) I see in Google Analytics are not present in Google WebMaster Tools. Does this mean that the spammy ones that I'm concerned about have already been discounted by Google, or are the spammy links no-follow? Any input on this would also be appreciated.

How do I know which keywords to track in my MOZ Campaigns?
Good morning Mozzers from the London, England. This may be a silly question to many of the community, but here goes "How do I know which keywords to track in my MOZ campaigns?" I work in the gyms section in the UK and am tracking keywords like "Gyms in Liverpool" or "Manchester gyms" which send me some traffic. I can see search terms like the above do send me traffic from Google's Webmaster Tools, but obviously this tool won't highlight the keyword opportunities I am missing out on because I currently don't rank. Any guidance on this dilemma would be hugely appreciated, Kindest regards Ben

SEO moz Report Card
I just ran some on page report cards. As I was playing around with the tool I noticed that I would get different results if I used my primary domain vs a 2nd domain. The main difference was in how the tool was counting keywords on the page. The keyword used was 'vehicle inventory' Primary domain: www.brand-state.com/inventory.htm Title = 1, URL = 0, Meta = 1, H1 = 1, H2-4 = 1 Body =1, Strong = 1, IMG Alt = 1 Total = 7 2nd domain: www.company-name-brand.com/inventory.htm Title = 1, URL = 0, Meta = 1, H1 = 1, H2-4 = 2 Body =5, Strong = 4, IMG Alt = 2 Total = 13 I can understand if the keyword was in the domain, but it's not. So I'm wondering what is going on here - any help or suggestions on what to research would be a great help. Thank you!

No longer in top 100 for branded keyword - How!?
Got a weird one here... Won't give away actual URL but for this example let's say client's site is: www.purplebananas.com Many of the longtail keyword-targeted subpages/posts are still ranking pretty well. We recently went through and optimized the site based on poor scores we found from crawl reports from SEO Moz, which included renaming some sub-pages, eliminating duplicate content pages, archives, etc (it's a wordpress site, about 4 years old). This site used to rank at the top or near it for the search "purple bananas". However, after we optimized the site it's almost completely fallen off the radar of Google, turns up way over 100 for the search "purple bananas". Strangely, if we search "purplebananas" we're at the top still. Any idea what's going on here? Are we potentially over-optimized or something weird for our own brand!? Any troubleshooting tips? FWIW the changes were made about 6 weeks ago and while we're steadily building links, I don't think this is the standard "Google dance". Thanks!

What's been the best SERP rank tracker for you?
I do a lot of my SERP ranking tracking via Aaron Wall's Rank Checker, but I'm realizing it's taking up too much time. I was looking at Raven's tools and a few others. What's been your favorite thus far? If you do reply, can you talk about: price capabilities time savings b/c of it graphical UI other thoughts I like SEOMoz's UI, but I can only manage 5 domains and I don't have a huge budget yet. Also, if there's a rank checker out there that incorporates google places results, that would be great too! Maybe too good, eh?

Can I change the crawl day ?
Hi All I hope there is a simple solution to this - we have a number of campaigns setup which are all crawled, and therefore updated, on different days of the week. We review these weekly and it would be much easier if they were all crawled on the same day. Is it possible to change the crawl day for some campaigns? Thanks Roy
