What should my main sitemap URL be?
-
Hi Mozzers - regarding the URL of a website's main website:
http://example.com/sitemap.xml is the normal way of doing it but would it matter if I varied this to:
http://example.com/mainsitemapxml.xml or similar?
I can't imagine it would matter but I have never moved away from the former before - and one of my clients doesn't want to format the URL in that way.
What the client is doing is actually quite interesting - they have the main sitemap: http://example.com/sitemap.xml - that redirects to the sitemap file which is http://example.com/sitemap (with no xml extension) - might that redirect and missing xml extension the redirected to sitemap cause an issue? Never come across such a setup before.
Thanks in advance for your feedback - Luke

Yes there is no problem with that, in fact redirect to a list of sitemaps, you can make the test

Thanks for your help Ramon!

Thanks Roman - that is helpful - with Yoast - do they redirect from one sitemap to another sitemap? Is that acceptable to Google (the redirect from one sitemap URL to another sitemap URL?).
-
Is not so weird, Yoast SEO generate multiples sitemaps based on pages, categories or even images and use the same structure, redirect from sitemap.xml to another url
Talking about the format
The Sitemap protocol enables you to provide details about your pages to search engines However, in addition to the XML protocol, there's anothers format supported such as RSS feeds and text files, which provide more limited information. So there are many option to create a sitemap but the most common and accepted is XML

hi Luke Rowlands,
You can use another name (although i can´t come up with a reason why a client wouldn´t want that format in the url). You should however than
Link to it in your robots.txt or submit the sitemap directly to the search engines

Changing sitemaps in console
Hi there, Does anyone have any experience submitting a completely new sitemap structure - including URLs - to google console? We've changed our sitemap plug in, so rather than /sitemap-index.xml, our main sitemap home is /sitemap.xml (as an example). Is it better to 410 the old ones or 301 redirect them to the new sitemaps? If 301, what do we do about sitemaps that don't completely correlate - what was divided into item1.xml, item2.xml is now by date so items-from-2015.xml, items-from-2016.xml and so on. On a related note, am I right in thinking that there's no longer a "delete/ remove sitemap" option on console? In which case, what happens to the old ones which will now 404? Thanks anyone for any insight you may have 🙂

Should you shorten very long URLs?
Hi Moz Community! If the nav architecture URL is long, like this: https://www.savewildlife.org/wildlife-conservtion/endangered-species-act-protections/endangered-species-list/birds/mexican-spotted-owl can I and should I shorten that new destination URL to make it easy for Google to see that the page topic is really the owl, like this: https://savewildlife.org/endangered-species-list/mexican-spotted-owl Thank you! Jane

Redirecting a Few URLs to a New Domain
We are in the process of buying the blog section of a site. Let's say Site A is buying Site B. We have taken the content from Site B and replicated it on Site A, along with the exact url besides the TLD. We then issued 301 redirects from Site B to Site A and initiated a crawl on those original Site B urls so Google would understand they are now redirecting to Site A. The new urls for Site A, with the same content are now showing up in Google's index if we do a site:SiteA.com search on the big G. Anyone have any experience with this as to how long before Site A urls should replace Site B urls in the search results? I undestand there may be a ranking difference and CTR difference based on domain bias, etc... I'm just asking if everything goes as planned and there isn't a huge issue, does the process take weeks or months?

Submitting sitemaps every 7 days
Question, if you had a site with more than 10 million pages (that you wanted indexed) and you considered each page to be equal in value how would you submit sitemaps to Google? Would you submit them all at once: 200 sitemaps 50K each in a sitemap index? Or Would you submit them slowly? For example, would it be a good idea to submit 300,000 at a time (in 6 sitemaps 50k each). Leave those those 6 sitemaps available for Google to crawl for 7 days then delete them and add 6 more with 300,000 new links? Then repeat this process until Google has crawled all the links? If you implemented this process you would never at one time have more than 300,000 links available for Google to crawl in sitemaps. I read somewhere that eBay does something like this, it could be bogus info though. Thanks David

Redirecting my new Website URL to my old Website URL
Hi! OK, I am semi - new to SEO Moz but have been self-teaching for 3 years. However I am stuck.. I have been operating my e-commerce site from www.shopadornonline.com for the past 3 years. I just purchased www.shopadorn.com Right now Shopadorn.com re-directs to www.shopadornonline.com because all my products and links go to shopadornonline.com/productblahblahblah I guess I am stuck. Not sure what to tell my web designer to do? Do I give up on having shopadorn.com OR do I start re-directing customers and doing 301 re-directs? I think from what i have read that it is bad to have traffic going to both shopadorn and shopadornonline as they compete for rankings? Where should I start?
