Learning SEO and Coding
-
Hi
I have read a number of ppl suggest that the best way to learn SEO is to build a low stakes site and experiment and measure how the effects of those experiments. Agree? Disagree? Anybody have success doing this? Anybody find it a waste of time? Finally, I know Code Academy, what are some other good resources?
Thanks

Having your own sandbox to screw around in is a great place to start, Jeff. It will let you begin to get a feel for some of the things that need to be taken into account as you build an SEO strategy for your site.
But the difficulty is your new site will have very little traffic so it will be very hard to tell how much impact your changes and optimizations or actually having.
Once you get to the point where you feel reasonably comfortable with the basics, and are pretty sure you can operate without creating major risk for the site you're working on, a great next step is to adopt a favorite local charity which has a website in need of assistance and optimization.
Total win-win, as the website gets some help that is more experienced than what they can themselves provide, and you get the opportunity to work on a site that has enough traffic that you can start to see the actual effect of what you're doing.
Obviously you are not getting paid for any of the work, so you can make it clear that their expectations should be in line with the fact that you are learning your way along in the process. But they are much more likely to allow you the opportunity than a commercial website that is depending on their site for their income and would be unwilling to trust a newbie with the keys.
This approach helps address the standard conundrum in SEO: you shouldn't take on commercial clients until you have enough experience, but you can't get enough experience until you actually can take on some bigger websites.

I think that you should build a really good site... Work on it at least 20 hours per week for a long time. Then you have more skin in the game.

Of course when it comes to learning, what better that own research and implemented things and your own observation comes handy.
The better way of doing is self study and deriving results by implementing those codes. At large HTML and CSS are enough to start with. As you graduate you can learn more languages and dynamic scripts.
I suggest: www.w3.org, www.w3schools.com

Doing SEO and trying things out is definitely the best way to learn-- it's the way I learned and continue to learn. You can read about different SEO tactics all you like, but unless you've actually implemented them you'll have no idea if they'll work for you.
Definitely, if you are experimenting with risky tactics or trying out new things, it can be helpful to have a throwaway site or two so you don't risk your main business by getting penalized.
Unless you are planning on becoming a developer, the best coding to know for SEO is HTML & CSS. These are the languages of the web, and being comfortable with them will allow you to dive into your site's code to make any on-page enhancements. This is the site I've used and reference on a regular basis:

Apostrophes impact on SEO
I have a question about the use of Apostrohes in the text of your site for your keyword. Most of the info I have found says in most cases it does not matter, but it depends. Most of the info about this issue I have found is a few years old. I am leaning towards not using it at all to make it easier for everyone writing for the website to always do it the same way. Here is an example: Lawyer’s Lawyers' Lawyers Does it matter if I use the apostrophe?

What's the best way to handle seasonal SEO?
Hi, I work for a gifting company, and so Christmas is hot on the agenda right now. I was wondering what you would recommend when it comes to gifting categories for keywords such as 'Christmas gifts for Mum'? I have a 'gifts for mum' category for all year round, but to rank for Christmas related keywords I will have to include these keywords on this page as soon as possible and this would make the content on the page seem slightly irrelevant. I do not really want to have separate pages, but is this the only way to rank for this?

Is my SEO company a scam?
Hello, I am rather new to online marketing and because of this employ an SEO company to help with improving my ranking. They have now been working with me for around 6 months and I have not seen an increase in the traffic to my site - in fact it is at it all time low. Yesterday I only had 4 visitors for example. They keep ensuring me it will take time, and show me reports on how my keywords are ranking, and some appear to be doing okay, but I would have thought traffic would have improved by now. Why I am a little suspicious of this company is they only seem to be doing back linking. They have done very little, if anything, with on-page optimisation, so much so that I tried to do this all myself following Moz guidelines etc. But even this has seen very little improvement. I would have thought that as a paid SEO company, they may see that something is clearly not working. Perhaps the wrong keywords? Suggest a different tactic? I write blogs posts, am social media active but feeling very discourage with it all as seeing very little results. I continuously hear about scams and get new emails every day saying "we have analysed your site and all these things are wrong... pay us $XXX and we will get you traffic" but who can you trust and how can you find an affordable way to gain traffic as a very small business. Would be great to get feedback from anyone who may know what is going on. Thanks Astrid

Is KEI metric still commonly used by SEOs
I'd like to ask about the KEI, is it used by now? and is it really matters ? I guess # of results by Google is not a good metric to decide if the keyword is good or not? I'd really appreciate your inputs

SEO for small, independent insurance agencies -- is it possible?
I work with a lot of small, independent insurance agencies and have found through keyword research that most people search for insurance by state (e.g. pennsylvania auto insurance) or simple by product (e.g. auto insurance). Only if an agency is located in a densely populated city like San Francisco do I see people searching for insurance by city. As you can probably guess, these keywords are extremely competitive. Big companies like Geico and Progressive tend to take over page one for these searches. So, if I'm trying to optimize a website for an insurance agency in Quakertown, PA, for example, a small town with very few monthly searches (zero according to Google's keyword tool), how should I focus my on-page SEO efforts? Should I focus on "state + insurance," "city + insurance," or a combination of both? Or am I approaching this all wrong? Thank you in advance for your help. I'm feeling really stumped and would appreciate any fresh perspective.

What is the relationship/difference between categories and keywords in terms of google local seo?
I know that they are very similar as search signals, but I would like to understand the exact relationship. My company is in the process of adding local seo services to our seo offerings, and we are trying to hammer out a process for determining optimal categories for businesses based on keywords we are already using for optimizing their sites. Any insights or suggestions on how best to do this would be much appreciated.

No KWs to target and SEO value
Hello, I'm writing some on-going Q&A type blog posts and perform KW research for each post; however, there are a few where the question is not a popular topic at all and because of this, there are no KWs to target. I've checked a few sources. The question needs to be answered and i'm trying to get as much SEO value as i can. Just wondering how have you gone about this? Just answer the question and it will naturally target the long tail?
