Redirect Chain

in Moz I did the analysis of my web and it tells me that I have a redirect in chain: The redirect chains often occur when several redirecting rules are accumulated, like redirecting a 'www' to a URL other than www or a page not secure to a secure page / https: Look for any recurring string that can be rewritten as a single rule. Take special care with chains 301/302 in any combination, since 302 in the mix could affect the ability of 301 to pass the value of the link. I thank you for your help in solving

Miguel,
You are quite right that a redirect chain can be caused by moving to HTTPS. The problem comes when you have redirects already in place and then you move to HTTPS. So for example:
http://domain.com/location1 Redirects to http://domain.com/location2 because you have moved a piece of content.
If you then install an SSL and move to HTTPS then the route becomes:
http://domain.com/location1>http://domain.com/location2>https://domain.com/location2
So there are now 3 URLs involved.
This is a simple example with only 3 URLs - I have seen cases where there are 5 or 6 because someone left an HTTP link on the page. I have also seen redirect loops where there is an endless chain which cannot be resolved. In that case, the page just crashes.
Best practice is to scrap the first redirect and replace it with
http://domain.com/location1>https://domain.com/location2>
Depending on who you read there is a small loss of link juice when passing through a 301 (permanent redirect) and a 302 (temporary redirect) so it is important to have as few as possible. It also makes perfect sense to have as few calls to the server as possible.
Regards
Nigel

Complete redesign of website and 301 redirects
I did a complete redesign and content change for my website. I have my new webpages indexed but they still haven't replaced the old ones after 1 month. In search results I see both the old ones and the news ones. How long of a delay should I expect (approximately) for the old pages to be replaced by the new ones knowing the entire website was changed. Thank you,

Removing & redirecting old pages
Hi In the case of an e-commerce store when you remove/delete an old sub department page because you no longer sell the products that page was for can you/should you redirect it to its parent main category/dept page first or just delete and let become a 404 ? Being a sub department it is obviously closely related to the main category/dept but seem strange to 301 it since its not really moved permanently to that page but i hear that's what people do to transfer that pages authority before deleting it so its not lost cheers dan

301 Redirects From a URL without Keyphrases to one With Keyphrases
I have a client that sells services. Each service offered currently has a URL structure like this: www.companyname.com/product/asp$view-id-page3022-item-24 These pages are pretty old, and I would love to have a more user-friendly URL like this: www.companyname.com/product/purple-swatch-watch If I rename the URL and do a 301 redirect, what impact will that have on search? Ideally, this page will be optimized for "purple swatch watch", but the current URL structure is so... well, you know. My apologies if this has been answered before. I tried looking through archived of 301 issues, but lost hope after my first 10 or so attempts at answered didn't help this specific issue.

302 Temporary Redirects
Hi, We currently have a number of 302 redirects set up on our e-commerce store that redirect from no forward slash at the end to a forward slash at the end of the url (see below). example: domain.com/treadmills

Redirects to
domain.com/treadmills/ Am I correct in saying that this will not pass link juice and the redirects should be changed to 301's (or just removed?). Or are the two urls treated the same (with or without forward slash)? Thanks in advance! Regards,

How do you create a 301 redirect for www.mysite..com/index.html in htaccess.
I understand that it is possible to create a 301 redirect for www.mysite..com/index.html to www.mysite.com. (as well as subdirectories.) How is this accomplished? My hosting company says that setting this up in htaccess will cause "Apache to geti into an infinite loop and the page won’t load." I have read on the forum that this is possible. Any help would be greatly appreaciated. THanks. Perri
