Moving content from 1 site to another
-
Hi Moz'ers
I have recently taken over the company I work for (www.prendas.co.uk) and want to migrate approx 200 pages from my hobby site to my company's eCommernce website on Shopify Plus. The content (text/photos) are highly relevant to the company, is unique & written by me and will hopefully generate some sales.
I have a plan to gradually move them all over (I intend on doing 2-5/day) into a specific blog section to house them all. I'll then create an Apache perm. redirect to the old site too.
Source: cycling-jersey-collection.com D/A 21
Destination: prendas.co.uk D/A 35The plan is to eventually shut the old site down.
Does anybody have any best practice/and/or recommendations?
Thanks in advance.
Andy

Thanks - I'll go ahead and do that.

The best practice here is to redirect one by one - rather than redirecting everything on the old domain to your new domain's homepage. So, as you move each one over, also have your .htaccess file up and set up those redirects. This way you can make sure that Google sees you're redirecting people to the same content, and you can also make sure any of the old link juice is flowing deeper within your Shopify site - not just stopping at the homepage.

Is 301 redirects a deal breaker for Migrating content or moving to new software?
I have this forum with about 2 million posts for 16 years on root of the domain. I am looking to switch softwares but the top ones won’t help setup 301 redirects. But I can still migrate all my members and all my content (threads/posts), would Google still reindex all our content or if we don’t setup redirects would it really kill our entire traffic for a long time or maybe just a month or so? I really want to migrate to software that isn’t forum based but rather something that offers courses, chat, live video streaming, subscription based etc. and this is the only way to do so OR to set it up on an entirely new domain OR subdomain but to me that is like starting all over from scratch? I could archive the forum to read only and set it up on subdomain or another root domain - then on the archived forum setup banners and a pop up linking to the new site or new subdomain? . This is such a hard decision for us as the current forum we have had for so many years has lost members posting from 1k a day to just a handful a day, our fb group though gets 1k a day so I’m trying to revive a site into something more modern and has all the training features we can offer as well.

Do quizzes hurt your site? Thin content?
We did a 10 question quiz awhile back relating to something we were sponsoring, and it had a decent response. However, considering quizzes just aren't that long, does that contribute to making the site's content thin? Obviously, it's not a major problem at the moment, but if we did more of them would this be an issue? If there's no real issue, I'd prefer not to no-index them, but I'd love some feedback to help make the decision. Thanks, Ruben

Linking out to authoritive sites from my ecommerce site
Good afternoon SEOmoz community. I was looking for a specific answer or advice or opinion about linking out to other sites. My Site www.tacticalbootstore.com has been undergoing a complete content rewrite. In the process we have been told and read where it can be good to link out to other authoritive sites. One of the pages we have rewritten is here. http://www.tacticalbootstore.com/belleville-boots-sizing-chart-a-97.html We have not added the graphics yet as they are being built now. This is just an informational page about sizing of a particular manufacturers boots. Once you get to the bottom of the text we have added a link to the actual manufacturers page. Is this helpful for us in the SERPS or not? Thank you for your time. Chris

Site not ranking in Google but comes up #1 in Yahoo and Bing
Hi everyone, I've been working on SEO for this site for about 2 years and for some reason the site has just tanked in google. However it shows up #1 in yahoo and bing for the same search. http://www.nfsmn.com Phrase: "commercial foundation repair mn" If anyone can shed some light on the issue I would really appreciate it. They do have a sister-site: american-waterworks.com that may be causing issues as they link a lot of content to amww but not the other way around. Thanks Eric
