Penalty for duplicate content on the same website?
-
Is it possible to get a penalty for duplicate content on the same website?
I have a old custom-built site with a large number of filters that are pre-generated for speed. Basically the only difference is the meta title and H1 tag, with a few text differences here and there.
Obviously I could no-follow all the filter links but it would take an enormous amount of work.
The site is performing well in the search.
I'm trying to decide whether if there is a risk of a penalty, if not I'm loath to do anything in case it causes other issues.

Your ranking will be decreased. It is better to use canonical URL to avoid duplicate contents in your website.

It wouldn't cause a literal penalty from Google, however, yes, it can hurt your site's rankings.
It sounds like those filters use URL parameters? If so it's possible for all parameterized URLs to be controlled or use canonical tags to indicate duplicate content.
What types of filters are these? EG what is changing on the page when you select the filters? Is this like an ecommerce category experience where you're filtering product listings?

Hi seoman10,
there is no penalty for duplicated content but rankings can be impacted negatively because of the duplicated content and your web may have a worst performance on Google.
This is because Google will waste many time searching in all your similar content to decide which page to show in the search results, wasting also your "crawl budget", and probably will also divide the authority between more than one of the similar pages, losing authority in this process.
Also, Google may choose to show in the search results a filter version of the page that is not your preferred one.
I recommend you to use canonicals to solve this problem, pointing all the filter versions of the page with canonical to the non-filter one.
Hope that helps
Good luck!

How to solve this issue and avoid duplicated content?
My marketing team would like to serve up 3 pages of similar content; www.example.com/one, www.example.com/two and www.example.com/three; however the challenge here is, they'd like to have only one page whith three different titles and images based on the user's entry point (one, two, or three). To avoid duplicated pages, how would suggest this best be handled?

Duplicate content created by website Calendar - A Penalty?
A colleague of mine asked me a question about duplicate content coming from their event calendar. I don't think this will affect them negatively, but I would love some feedback and thoughts. ThanksOne of my clients, LifeTech Academy, is using my RavenTools software. Raventools has reported a HUGE amount of duplicate content (4.4K instances). The duplicate content all revolves around their calendar and repeating events (http://lifetechacademy.org/events/)The question is this - will this impact their SEO efforts in a negative way?

No-index pages with duplicate content?
Hello, I have an e-commerce website selling about 20 000 different products. For the most used of those products, I created unique high quality content. The content has been written by a professional player that describes how and why those are useful which is of huge interest to buyers. It would cost too much to write that high quality content for 20 000 different products, but we still have to sell them. Therefore, our idea was to no-index the products that only have the same copy-paste descriptions all other websites have. Do you think it's better to do that or to just let everything indexed normally since we might get search traffic from those pages? Thanks a lot for your help!

Does duplicate content penalize the whole site or just the pages affected?
I am trying to assess the impact of duplicate content on our e-commerce site and I need to know if the duplicate content is affecting only the pages that contain the dupe content or does it affect the whole site? In Google that is. But of course. Lol

Help With Preferred Domain Settings, 301 and Duplicate Content
I've seen some good threads developed on this topic in the Q&A archives, but feel this topic deserves a fresh perspective as many of the discussion were almost 4 years old. My webmaster tools preferred domain setting is currently non www. I didn't set the preferred domain this way, it was like this when I first started using WM tools. However, I have built the majority of my links with the www, which I've always viewed as part of the web address. When I put my site into an SEO Moz campaign it recognized the www version as a subdomain which I thought was strange, but now I realize it's due to the www vs. non www preferred domain distinction. A look at site:mysite.com shows that Google is indexing both the www and non www version of the site. My site appears healthy in terms of traffic, but my sense is that a few technical SEO items are holding me back from a breakthrough. QUESTION to the SEOmoz community: What the hell should I do? Change the preferred domain settings? 301 redirect from non www domain to the www domain? Google suggests this: "Once you've set your preferred domain, you may want to use a 301 redirect to redirect traffic from your non-preferred domain, so that other search engines and visitors know which version you prefer." Any insight would be greatly appreciated.
