Open Site Explorer - Link Export Not Showing Same Number of Links
-
Noob question. I'm using Open Site Explorer to hunt down some external links for a website. In the attached image (post-pressing the filter button), it says I have 889 external links, but after I've downloaded the CSV, I only get 695 links.
Why the difference in number? And if I'm doing something wrong, how do I make sure I'm getting the full amount of external links to my client's website?
Thanks!

Makes a little more sense. I'll get it eventually
Thanks Megan!

Hey Ellen!
In the OSE interface, we'll tell you how many links you have total, but we'll always only show you a maximum of 25 links per domain, whether it be in the interface or in the CSV export. Also, the link per domain max applies regardless of how many links you have. So, if you only have 1 linking domain, but 75 links from that same domain, we'll still only show the top 25.
The data in exporting to a CSV versus the interface in OSE is the same, but exporting to a CSV gives you all your link information on the same page and can make it easily sortable.
I hope this helps! I know this can be confusing, so if you have any other questions, please let me know!

Hi Megan,
Thank you for the response, but I still don't know if that answers my question.
Does this mean in my particular case that I can navigate through the full 889 reported links only in Open Site Explorer, but I cannot export that full 889 (well below the 100,000 links) to CSV? If I export to CSV then I only see 695?
Can you speak a little more about the difference between viewing external links in OSE vs. exporting links to CSV?
Thanks!

Hey there! This is Megan from SEOmoz. Great question! So, the drastic difference in the number of links is because we'll only show you the top 25 links per domain. Our API that we use for OSE currently has a total limit of up to 100,000 links for any domain, so we only show the top 25 because if, for example, someone has 500,000 links and most of them are from the same domain, then we wouldn't want to fill up all 100,000 links with the same domain information and leave out links from other important domains. Instead, we'll only show the top 25 based on page authority so we can show the links from other sites without the same domain taking up all 100,000 spaces. In other words, we want to show you your link diversity.
I hope this helps explain things! If you have any other questions, let me know.

When do the "just discovered" links on Open Site Explorer count?
I have been working hard to get follow backlinks but they have all been in the Just Discovered part of Open Site Explorer for a long time. So they don't count in my stats for Domain Authority and such. When do they move OUT of Just Discovered?

SEOmoz Not Picking Up Links
I'm finding that SEOmoz often doesn't pick up on many of the links my client's websites are attaining. The links do appear in search engine and often have a high domain authority (often PR links, which I why I follow up to see if they've been picked up). I do tend to see many of the links appear in webmaster tools, so it's a little frustrating that they don't appear, even after months of pages being live. Thoughts?

Canonical issue in open site explorer
When I look at my back links in OSE, I see two landing pages on my site that are really the same page. www.mysite.com/ and www.mysite.com/(affiliate code here) These show different inbound link characteristics and page authority. The page in question has a rel=canonical tag. Am I doing something wrong?

Link Blocks
Sorry, perhaps a noob question. In relation to site explorer, have also searched and unable to find any information, wondered if anyone could advise as to what "Linking C Blocks" are? Found under the "Compare Link Metrics" tab. Thanks in advance. Lee

Latest OSE Update - Strange Numbers and Links
Hey everyone. I just checked our website in OSE with the latest update and noticed some strange numbers. The number of linking domains skyrocketed from 300 to 785 which definitely caught me off guard. Like all good SEOers I work hard to get links, but in a typical month I usually get between 40 and 50. To suddenly jump up by over 300 seems odd. Digging deeper, I noticed that some of the incoming link domains could be considered less than trustworthy (pages filled with links), while others I couldn't find at all on the page in question. I also never ever asked for any of these links, nor did anyone on my team. Should I be worried? I've heard of websites who purposely gain bad links to their competitors in order to penalize them. Is there an easy way to find out if this is going on? Could this possibly be a problem with OSE and just reporting non-existant links? Thanks for your feedback! Andrew BTW, the website in question is www.gooverseas.com
