This post is pretty much on the money. Directory links don't really have much SEO 'authority' value anyway, they only really help with geo-relevance. The fact of the matter is, barely anyone uses web-directories any more. Since search, they have become outmoded
As such, 9 times out of 10, no traffic flows through these links. Due to that, Google doesn't weight them very strongly. They can help to confirm the geographic position of your business and stuff like that, but only a select number of directories and directory-aggregators (like Central Index) are effective for that kind of thing
Like Thomas says, don't buy spammy directory links it's not safe. Well... I guess I'd say, you can buy paid links under certain circumstances - but if they're created for advertising purposes, they must be no-followed (so that they don't manipulate SEO rankings). Due to this, you would never create paid links 'just for SEO'. You'd be creating the paid links as part of a 'referral' traffic campaign, when you were certain that the link was priced right and you'd see decent traffic through it. But you'd nullify the SEO impact, to prevent any potential issues with Google
Google only want 'editorial' (not paid for, without bias) hyperlinks, created by editors or webmasters - to alter their ranking positions. If you pay an editor to review content which you might place on their site (but don't pay for the link itself), that's a gray area where you might be alright (as long as you content wasn't spammy). That being said, if you'rte paying for an editorial review process, you could pay and have your content declined (so there's more risk there also)
I second tom's opinion that 'guest posting' in its TRUE form is not dead. The problem with Google's language there is that, they confused 'sponsored' (paid) posting with guest authorship. Too many people did sponsored posts and claimed (falsely, against advertising laws) that they were editorial pieces. Advertorials and sponsored posts are dead. Guest posting, in its real (editorial) format is still very much alive and can work wonders

Don't "Buy Links" links from directories it is not safe!
Think like this should I would I pay to be on pay for Chamber of Commerce just for a Link? I would NOT
You can pay to join relevant sites **BUT NOT TOO BUY LINKS **
Content done better than great with outreach & PR will do the best

Guest Posting to relevant sites with great content is not dead but it has to add value.

Does link have any value?
I recently received a link, but upon inspecting the page source on the site I did not see the link in the coding. Is this a link with any SEO value? Is google able to see this link? Note: Upon inspecting the actual link on the page, I do see coding with a followed link, but on the page source, only the actual table in which it is listed shows in the coding, with none of the content - including our link, showing.

Link building strategy - my weak link!
Please help me understand link building. I've read the articles on Moz, but they seem vague to me. Specific questions: 1. How do I get my webpage on good quality sites? 2. Guest blogging? Good or not? 3. What about when people pick up one of our blog stories and publish it on their site with a link back? Is that bad now because it is duplicate content??? 4. Forum posts with a link in the signature? Good or not? 5. Directories - I get it that these are no longer good... are they severely negative? Should I take them down. 6. PR - Looks like this is bad... right??? 7. Youtube - any value? 8. Pinterst, LinkedIn, Twitter, Facebook, Instagram? Any value to backlinks here? 9. What about sites like redit? 10. Anything else I should consider?

How to check inbound link quality?
We're reaching out to various communities to do some link building at the moment and were wondering what people did to confirm that the links are from quality sources? We don't want links from bad neighbourhoods or sites which have had penalties applied against them etc... What tools can we use to find this out? Thanks in advance for any replies!

Does the ratio of external nofollow links to external "do follow" links matter in terms of SERPs ranking?
My site has an external link nofollow:dofollow ratio of approximately 1:1 That is, there are about as many nofollow external links as "do follow" external links. I have an impression that the ratio of no-follow to "do follow" links is a factor in the way that our website shows up in SERPs. I have the impression from reading a variety of sources, and from looking at Seomoz, that calculate "trust" factors as if they mattered (in SERPs), that seem to value a relatively low nofollow:dofollow ratio. Am I correct about that? Thanks,

Panda Update: Isn't a link still a link?
I was doing some link building and some SEO's said that the Panda update affected many websites. I am going to use eZineArticles.com as my example. EzineArticles was affected by the Panda update and does not show up in the SERPs as much as before. But they still have doFollow Links coming from the articles I am submitting. QUESTION: Regardless if EzineArticles was affected by the Panda Update, isn't a "Follow Link" still a "Follow Link" OR am I completely wasting my time on this devalued website? Edit: Yes I know a PR 0 page is not as valuable as a PR 9 page. I am asking from the standpoint of the affected Panda Update domains overall.

Linkbuilding: Checklist for quality of a link
Hi everyone, During linkbuilding you often stumble upon those links you are not quite sure of. At first it may seem like a brilliant idea to get a link fom that site but on a second look it may be not. So what would be a checklist of things to look for, if one is asessing a website's link quality? (e.g. how do you spot a bad neighborhood?) If you are using SEOmoz tools for the quality asessment, which one would you use? Looking forward to your answers! Thx for the help in advance! Regards Thorsten

Linking articles to each other
I've been using white-hat article marketing to post original content about my niche to credible article directories (yes, I realize many of them were recently devalued). My question is: Is it a good or bad idea to have future articles link to older articles, as a way to increase the chances of having the older articles indexed, or increasing the amount of link juice they pass to my site (since they point to my site)? I get 2 links per article and was thinking of using 1 to point to a prior (related) article, and the other to point to my site.
