Site move?
-
What happens in a site move from a subdomain to a new domain and how does that effect the root domain of the subdomain and whether or not the subdomain SEO would be transferred to the new domain?

Oh lord I really don't like working with Shopify haha! Basically I avoid it like the plague, although I will admit it is slowly, slowly improving
We have one or two clients who run Shopify and we absolutely do the best we can for them, but the truth is usually their results improve 'more' after they leave the platform. I can say that, Shopify is a good product for one-man-bands and people who 'just need a site' that looks professional (for their business cards etc) but no, it's not SEO-competitive (at all)
I don't make a huge effort to keep up with all of Shopify's changes and stuff, because what I have realised is that the fundamental philosophy of the platform (which is unlikely to change) goes against the competitive art and practice of SEO. When the platform stifles and limits 'what you can do' - how can it ever be bleeding edge? You end up confined
Email is on our Moz profile here if you want to have a chat about it. If you're moving 'away' from Shopify, there may be some pains there in terms of redirect limitations - but I'd need to look again and familiarise myself with what they can currently offer in that regard

thank you effectdigital for your thorough answer - really appreciate you taking the time to do so !
Do you work with Shopify at all?
If so, Is it possible to have a direct conversation with you regarding this topic?

If everything is done properly, the old site loses rankings for the content which is extracted and placed somewhere else. Hopefully the new site manages to achieve similar rankings for the migrated content, but there are a number of factors which could inhibit that
One thing would be the 'sandbox' that Google often puts around fresh domains which can see rankings inhibited for 3-6 months if the domain is very new (if it's never been used before, if it's only been a domain-sales based holding page before, or if the domain was misused in the past)
Other than that, a proper 301 redirect migration project would be needed to see as small a dip in performance as possible. You hope is that the old site loses all associated rankings and the new site picks them up again, but things seldom go this smoothly with such large and complex projects. What usually happens is that you lose the associated rankings from the old site and on the new site you often see a 10-15% dip in traffic, yes - even if you think all your redirects are perfect!
Remember that page-loading speeds affect rankings. If the new site is seen as a 'small project' and an 'offshoot' it is unlikely to gain the same strong hosting environment as the main site has - even if both sites are built using the same technology. As such you can sometimes see ranking reductions due to that
There's other stuff. Sometimes people only move the content across but don't move any of the Meta / technical SEO which existed on the old pages, to the new pages. Failed tech / Meta migration can also impact rankings quite prominently (thinks like H1s changing, custom URL slugs changing, Meta data changing, Schema getting 'lost' etc)
If the UX of the new site is poor or very different to that of the old site, that could potentially affect results
With 301 redirects there are numerous factors that can dampen their effectiveness:
- Creating too many links to redirects, internally or externally
- Creating redirect chains
- Misuse of redirect types (e.g: using a 302 or Meta refresh instead of a 301)
- Content similarity (e.g: if Google harvests the content on the old page and new page, using something like Boolean string similarity to compare - if the content has a low 'percentage' of similarity, you're not likely to see the SEO authority go across. This is a massively important one
- If Google believes that moving the content is an attempt to manipulate organic-search (SEO) rankings (e.g: if the content is moving purely so it can exist on an exact-match domain, and therefore get higher SEO rankings - but actually no value for the user is added by moving the content out)
- If Google believes the content has been moved from one organisation, brand or entity to another (aka the content has been sold for SEO purposes) that could influence how they look at the movement
... there are so many possible factors. Tread carefully and make sure all the 301 redirects are completely on-point with no errors, and the dip you may observe will likely be short and small. But if you go against Google, you could just lose everything and never see it again!

Has anyone transferred a site from WordPress to Webflow?
We're thinking about making the move, but I'm (mildly) concerned about SEO implications.

Moving the site and Rebranding
I was wondering about moving the site and rebranding. If one was to move their site with a good Google Page Rank, how long should you take before doing the updated redesign, cms update and url restructuring? I know that Matt Cutts has said that you should move BEFORE doing your redesign but I don't remember him saying how long you should take for each step. Thanks!

Site with no ads hit by Page Layout update?
Hi there! Can a site that has no ads on it be hit by Google's latest Page Layout update? Can it be hit for just one or two keywords? My site (www.ink2paper.com) has a decline in Google organic traffic in early Feb so my suspicion is the Page Layout update. However I have no ads on the site. Digging into GWMT I find that it is only one or 2 keywords that seems to have taken a dive, mainly [photo paper]. I used to get around 80 imps a day for this term. Then on 6 Feb it was down to 50; 7 Feb = 34; 8 Feb just 4 impressions! I got a spike back at usual levels on 10 & 11 Feb, but since then it has been back down to only 5 or so impressions a day. [photographic paper] took a small hit at the start of February, but has nose dived since the start of April. The homepage performs well for Google organic traffic - low bounce (22%) and good ecom conversion rate (14%) - although this is likely to be largely branded traffic. I feel my site is a 'good' result for the search term [photo paper], although there is always room for improvement of course! Any suggestions as to why Google has stopped showing my site for these keywords? All help is greatly appreciated. Cheers,

Content Migration & cost of moving pages
Hope you are all having a great day! I am wondering if anyone would be able to provide general feedback. I work for a medium size company in Chicago. Currently our site is static html and we are seeking to migrate to Wordpress. After speaking with a number of website companies and receiving proposals, I am trying to understand if there is an approximate going rate or range for moving content from static html to a CMS like Wordpress? i.e. a cost per page? We don't have any dynamic content. Most of our pages are text and images. The site itself, including the blog is around 220 pages. Thanks in advance for any insight or resources!

Should I Use An Animated Javascript Responsive Site
Hi, hope someone might be able to help me with this. I am setting my son up with a website for his small painting and decorating company. However, I am a wordpress stalwart and he has seen a theme which is a javascript animated responsive theme from template monster. Its not my choice just he is adamant that he wants it. However, I am slightly concerned that Google cannot index as well with these kind of sites as they would with a standard HTML site. I would be grateful if someone could confirm if they can be indexed etc. The content appears in what I can only describe as lightboxes. Thanks

Does Using Magento With Multi Sites Affect SEO
We have a client who has 3 separate websites targeting the US, Australia, and the UK. Each of them has relevant ccTLD's such as: .com .com.au and .co.uk. Our client wants to use the Magento multi-site function so it combines all the stores (which are the exact same products) and merge it into one through Magento. These sites are all hosted in the US and had nothing to do with me haha! I understand Rand has mentioned on a video it would be best having the websites with ccTLD's hosted in that country (if budget permits), however in this case the budget doesn't permit us to go down that road. Has anyone any advice on this matter, has anyone did this before and had a lot of success with the SEO? At present there doesn't seem to be a lot of information about it and opinions are varied and sometimes divided. Any help would be very much appreciated guys Thanks, Matt

Testing your code and site
I’ve got various WordPress websites with the Share This social plugin for WordPress. I have been using Firebug and http://analyze.websiteoptimization.com/wso to do general checks on the site and the code. And used W3C validator too. Due to the way WordPress appears to work we never seem to be able to get all the firebug/ website optimization tests to pass and the W3C validator passes everything on HTML 5 apart from 7 errors with the Share This social plugin. How do you test your code/websites? Should I stop be a perfectionist and just be happy?
