Forward slash on URL on Duplicate Content Report
-
Hi
I'm new to this whole Moz thing, so needing help from some kind people!
I've just looked at my Duplicate Page Content report and there are loads of URLs in there which are the same but are just differentiated by adding / at the end of the URL, e.g.
http://youngepilepsy.org.uk/news-and-events/events
http://youngepilepsy.org.uk/news-and-events/events/
Is this be a canonical issue? I can't understand why though as these aren't at the root. However when we add inline text links within the page HTML, there are some URLs with / and some without, could that be the reason?
Thanks for your help!

Two parts
1) If you link to two different URLs
http://youngepilepsy.org.uk/news-and-events/events
http://youngepilepsy.org.uk/news-and-events/events/
the two above would classify as that (with and without the slash are two different URLs)
and
2) if your server shows a 200 response on both of those URLs and shows the same content for those URLs
Then yes, you have a duplicate issue.
You need to
1) Make sure you keep consistent with how you link to URLs (with or without the slashes).
Decide on a standard, I personally like ending in slashes if this is an index page as this helps with reporting in places like Google Analytics where they are looking at your directory structure for reports.
If you never end in a slash
http://youngepilepsy.org.uk/news-and-events/events
and
http://youngepilepsy.org.uk/news-and-events/events/article-xyz
these two pages would be put into two different "folders" in your report for Google Analytics. I went round and round with the developers on this and had to show them the reports in GA to show why.
I also think we have had the standard that / being the index page for years now and then you have all the pages within it. I know with modern CMSs there may not be any folders and these are all actually "routes", but as a mental organizational construct (and in the reporting example above) I think most people (who are not programmers) think that way.
That said, I currently help run a site that has no trailing slashes, and I am living with it, again, being consistent is the most important. You will see many wall known SEO sites go sans slashes, so either way will work.
and
2) Then 301 redirect the "non standard" to the "standard" version (say the non slashed version to the slash version) so that you can clean up any other confusion that may be out there.
Cheers!

Crawlers reporting upper case letter url versions although these have been 301'd to lower case !?
Hi I have a client e-com site who's dev platform is on a windows server Their product pages have been auto-named after the product title, with the first letter in each word being upper case, which has hence translated to the URL having upper cases instances too. I asked them to set up 301 redirects for all url's that had upper case instances to lower case versions, which they say they have done. However I'm still seeing url's with upper case instances showing up in webmaster tools and moz crawl reports but when I copy & paste them into a browser they do redirect to, & resolve in, the lower case version. Its also upper case versions reported in the Google cache! So how come webmaster tools & Moz etc are reporting the upper case versions, surely if redirected it should be the lower case versions All Best Dan

Duplicate content on SearchResults.asp
hi guys. I'm currently working through the reported crawl errors in Moz Analytics, but an unsure what to do about some of them. for example... Searchresults.asp?search=frankie+says+relax is showing as having duplicate page content and page title as SearchResults.asp?searching=Y&sort=13&search=Frankie+Says+Relax&show=24 There's all sorts of searchresults.asp page being flagged. Is this something i can safely ignore or is it something i should endeavour to rectify? I'm also getting errors reported on shoppingcart.asp pages as well as pindex.asp (product index). I'm thinking i should maybe add disallow/ shoppingcart.asp to my robots text file, but am unsure as to whether i should be blocking robots from the search results pages and product index (which is essentially a secondary sitemap). Any advice would be greatly appreaciated. Thanks, Dave 🙂

5XX (Server Error) on all urls
Hi I created a couple of new campaigns a few days back and waited for the initial crawl to be completed. I have just checked and both are reporting 5XX (Server Error) on all the pages it tried to look at (one site I have 110 of these and the other it only crawled the homepage). This is very odd, I have checked both sites on my local pc, alternative pc and via my windows vps browser which is located in the US (I am in UK) and it all works fine. Any idea what could be the cause of this failure to crawl? I have pasted a few examples from the report | 500 : TimeoutError http://everythingforthegirl.co.uk/index.php/accessories.html 500 1 0 500 : Error http://everythingforthegirl.co.uk/index.php/accessories/bags.html 500 1 0 500 : Error http://everythingforthegirl.co.uk/index.php/accessories/gloves.html 500 1 0 500 : Error http://everythingforthegirl.co.uk/index.php/accessories/purses.html 500 1 0 500 : TimeoutError http://everythingforthegirl.co.uk/index.php/accessories/sunglasses.html | 500 | 1 | 0 | Am extra puzzled why the messages say time out. The server dedicated is 8 core with 32 gb of ram, the pages ping for me in about 1.2 seconds. What is the rogerbot crawler timeout? Many thanks Carl

No page reports for one of my campaigns
Hi Everyone! so glad to be here, I had hardly visited the forum and been missing out. I have a client who hired me to set up their basic SEO for their website and I see no grades for the pages, at first I don't maybe the website was not being indexed but report shows it crawled 37 pages so what does it mean no grades what so ever, also showing now rankings, I put 30 to check and zilch. thank you.

Link report that is broken down by C Block?
I've tried to do this in the advanced reports are of Moz, but to no avail. I just want to be able to see all the links (and anchor text would be nice too) for each CBlock.

Garbled URL's in Private Messages.
Every time I try to put a url in a Private message it gets garbled up with extra chars and then won't go to the right place. http://www.facebook.com/pages/Mariah-Carle-Photography Becomes: http://www.facebook.com/pages/Mariah58973jhsdfui-Carle%8594743Photography Ok after that test I deliberately garbled a url and it STILL work in the open forums....

Duplicate page title
I own a store www.mzube.co.uk and the scam always says that I have duplicate page titles or duplicate page. What happens is thn I may have for example www.mzube.co.uk/allproducts/page1. And if I hve 20 pages all what will change from each page is the number at the end and all the rest of the page name will be the same but really the pages are if different products. So the scans think I have 20 pages the same but I havent Is this a concern as I don't think I can avoid this Hope you can answer
