Homepage URL for multi-language site
-
Hi,
We are setting up a new site, and currently considering the URL and folder structure of the site. We will have 2-3 different language versions, and we have decided to use sub folders for this.
My question is regarding the homepage URL. We want the English language site (en) to be the default one, from where you can then change the language.
Should I have a folder for each of the language versions (as described below)?
www.mydomain.com/en
(this would be the default page where everyone would always come if they type www.mydomain.com to webrowser)www,mydomain.com/ru
Or, would it be better for SEO to have www.mydomain.com as the default URL where we would have the English version of the site, and then have two other folders (as below) where we would have the 2 other language versions:
www,mydomain.com/ru
Thank you in advance,
BR
Sam

I mean that www.site.com should be accessible as is (returning a 200 status) and not 301 redirect users to a page like www.site.com/en.
So the home page would be www.site.com and the rest will be www.site.com/en/page1, www.site.com/en/page2 etc. This might cause problems to implement with some CMS' but try if it can be done that way.

Thanks. Could you clarify more in detail what you mean by the below, if I use www.mydomain.com/en
Make sure the home page is actually www.mydomain.com (and not www.mydomain.com/en). Not using the root domain means throwing away backlinks and thereby site authority, so make sure it's available whether you use /en on the rest of the site or not.

Sam,
There is alos this whiteboard Friday that touches on the pros and cons of your options here: http://moz.com/blog/international-seo-where-to-host-and-how-to-target-whiteboard-friday

Hi Sam
IMO SEO is not the most crucial factor for this question. Yes, you have some slight benefits by using www.mydomain.com without /en for english. On the other hand, think usability and user interaction: Users who recognise the language patterns such as /ru and /es in the URL might want to reproduce the same thing for /en.
I think those are the two points of view that should be taken into account, but both are not that central and either way is okay. Some standard CMS's might not allow the special case for one language easily and you might have to use /en in order to be consistent. But personally, I would use www.mydomain.com without /en if the majority of your audience is english. That makes the site a little little bit "flatter" with one less subfolder in the URL.
That being said, one thing I absolutely recommend: Make sure the home page is actually www.mydomain.com (and not www.mydomain.com/en). Not using the root domain means throwing away backlinks and thereby site authority, so make sure it's available whether you use /en on the rest of the site or not.

URL structure of international hotel website
Hai all, Question about URL structure of international hotel website in Amsterdam: hotelcitadel.nl. Some information: - Target group are mainly english speaking guests from UK and US. Besides that guests from the Netherlands and some other countries. - Website in 6 languages. - No geo-targetting; just language targetting with hreflang annotations. Current situation: hotelcitadel.nl = dutch language version and hotelcitadel.nl/en = english language version We are thinking about changing this to: hotelcitadel.nl would become english version and hotelcitadel.nl/nl would become the dutch version. Reason: root domain hotelcitadel.nl has by far the most links, and making the root domain the english version could help the rankings in english speaking countries like UK and US. What do you think, would this be a wise idea? Regards, Maurice

SEO in foreign languages
Hi everyone, I currently run a website called Barquitos www.barquitos.com The site is an extension of a shop that is based here in Spain. Though because the town is particularly touristy we built the website to offer English and Spanish as language options on the site. English on Barquitos.com and Spanish through a sub domain es.barquitos.com. In an ideal world I want to rank the English version for English phrases on Google.co.uk, and the Spanish sub domain on es.barquitos.com. However, my Spanish is only at a reasonable standard, probably not good enough to look at writing quality content in Spanish. Is building up the Page Authority and Domain authority for the English main domain enough to rank the Spanish sub domain or do we need a focussed approach for both languages? Any tips or advice for helping to rank sub domains in foreign languages would be greatly appreciated. Thanks everyone Stu

Huge increase in US direct visits to a UK site, why?
Hi all, My UK website usually gets around 10,000 direct (Direct in Analytics) visits per month however for August this has shot up to 24,000! However the majority of these direct visits seem to be coming from the US and as a result the bounce rate is through the roof, 84%! Why would my UK based site suddenly be receiving huge amounts of US visits? Any ideas?

How to optimise a site for 2 countries
Hi there - Any help with the below much appreciated I am helping an Australian company, producing packaging products for businesses. Their site is hosted in Australia and their offices are in Australia. They have asked me to take care of both on-page and off-page SEO so that they rank for keywords related to their products - e.g. 'cardboard boxes'. This should be fairly straightforward for Australian based (.com.au) searchers, but they also supply their products to South Africa, and so want their results to show up also for South African based (.co.za) searchers. Also consider: it is not typical for searchers for these products to use geomodifiers in their search terms there is no unique content for the South African market versus the Australian... the product information is essentially identical. What should we do to ensure their results show up equally for those in South Africa as well as Australia? I am considering building a completely separate site, hosted in South Africa and specifically for the S.A market, but will the duplicate content effect be an issue? Also, this would essentially mean double the SEO effort, is there no way I could achieve our goals more efficiently? many thanks to any help

How to replace my .co.uk site with my .com site in the US Google results
My customer and I are based in the UK. My customer's site, www.blindbolt.co.uk has been around for years. Last year we launched their American site, www.blindboltusa.com. Searching on google.com (tested both via proxy and using the gl=us querystring trick), a search for blind bolt on the US Google returns our www.blindbolt.co.uk site. We would like it to show our www.blindboltusa.com website in US searches. Webmaster tools has the Geographic Target set correctly for each site. Does anyone have any ideas or suggestions please? Thanks.

De-Indexing URLs from a specific Locale
Is it possible to de-index a specific URL from showing up in a specific locale? For example, if I want to de-index http://www.example.com/category/product1 from http://www.google.co.uk but not http://www.google.com, is that possible?
