Are similar title tags frowned upon by search engines?
-
We are a B2B company that is looking to convert to one global portal very soon. It is only then that we will be able to address a lot of the IA SEO issues we are currently facing. However, we are looking to make some quick fixes, namely adding a proper title to the different country homepages. Will having the same title, with only the country modifier swapped out be a good tactic? Since we want a unified title across all country sites, it just makes sense that we don't change it for every single country.
For example:
- Small Business Solutions for B2B Marketers | Company USA
- Small Business Solutions for B2B Marketers | Company Italy
- Small Business Solutions for B2B Marketers | France
-
Thank you for these answers. They provide a lot of insight.
One comment about the translations though, is that there could be different countries using the same language (English is the obvious example here). While we can identify the pages through the use of different country subdomains, each country would still want to publish content on their own sites.
-
My suggestion is to localize asap your site also in the languages of the countries you want to target.
Honestly, even if you craft a perfect title, if it is not in the language of the regional Google:
-
Google won't present in up in the rankings;
-
People won't pay that much attention, because a French or Italian first look for results in their languages, and just in extreme need to results in other languages (and if the brand is very well know).

Personally I would be looking at ways to make the title tag more unique to the location. Google is always on the search for spammy pages and if I saw loads of pages with the same (or very similar title tag/content) I would look at moving those pages down the rankings.
You want your title to have the most relevant keywords fist - in this case the focus would be the country (as this is the most unique part of the title). Hope this helps.

From my experience, it's actually ok, but i try to keep it below 65 characters and as long as it's just a few pages (not more than 50)
Some people will definitely want different title tags each time but I look at it depending on the website.

Do you get penalized in search results when you use a heading tag, but it's not technically a heading (used for emphasis)?
Do you get penalized in search results when you use a heading tag, but it's not technically a heading? My clients are using heading tags for text they want to emphasize and make stand out. Does this affect search rankings for SEO?

Big Increase in 404 Errors after Google Custom Search Engine Install on Website
My URL is: http://www.furniturefashion.comHi forum.I recently installed a Custom Google Search Engine (https://www.google.com/cse/) on my blog about ten days ago. Since then my 404 errors in Webmaster Tools has skyrocketed by several thousand. I had not had an issue before. Once it was installed the 404 errors started appearing. What's interesting is that all the errors have the URL then the word "undefined" at the end. I have attached a screen shot from my Webmaster Tools dashboard. Also, there are a few examples below of what the URLs are that have the 404 errors.wood_closet_organizer_to_improve_space_utilization/undefinedsmall-sweet-10-inspiring-small-kitchen-designs/undefined Has anyone had this issue? I very much want the search engine on my site, but not at the expense of several thousand 404 errors. My site queries has been going down since the installation of the custom search engine. Here is some of the code that I have below that I took off my site doing a "view source". Any help would be greatly appreciated.href='http://cdn.furniturefashion.com/wp-content/plugins/google-custom-search/css/smoothness/jquery-ui-1.7.3.custom.css?ver=3.9.2' type='text/css' media='all' />rel='stylesheet' id='gsc_style_search_bar-css' href='http://www.google.com/cse/style/look/minimalist.css?ver=3.9.2' type='text/css' media='all' />rel='stylesheet' id='gsc_style_search_bar_more-css' href='http://cdn.furniturefashion.com/wp-content/plugins/google-custom-search/css/gsc.css?ver=3.9.2' type='text/css' media='all' />< uXRSEkC

Title Missing or Empty
Hello, I get a 'Title Missing or Empty' for the following page on our website: http://www.niyati.sg/print-design/57/annual-report-design This error is seen while checking through other tools like Screaming Frog also. Any idea what the issue may be? The page is generated through a custom CMS, so the title and meta descriptions are created the same way as the other portfolio pages, none of which shows any errors. Thanks in advance!

How does a search engine bot navigate past a .PDF link?
We have a large number of product pages that contain links to a .pdf of the technical specs for that product. These are all set up to open in a new window when the end user clicks. If these pages are being crawled, and a bot follows the link for the .pdf, is there any way for that bot to continue to crawl the site, or does it get stuck on that dangling page because it doesn't contain any links back to the site (it's a .pdf) and the "back" button doesn't work because the page opened in a new window? If this situation effectively stops the bot in its tracks and it can't crawl any further, what's the best way to fix this? 1. Add a rel="nofollow" attribute 2. Don't open the link in a new window so the back button remains finctional 3. Both 1 and 2 or 4. Create specs on the page instead of relying on a .pdf Here's an example page: http://www.ccisolutions.com/StoreFront/product/mackie-cfx12-mkii-compact-mixer - The technical spec .pdf is located under the "Downloads" tab [the content is all on one page in the source code - the tabs are just a design element] Thoughts and suggestions would be greatly appreciated. My urls changed with new CMS now search engines see pages as 302s what do I do?
We recently changed our CMS from php to .NET. The old CMS did not allow for folder structure in urls so every url was www.mydomain/name-of-page. In the new CMS we either have to have .aspx at the end of the url or a /. We opted for the /, but now my page rank is dead and Google webmaster tools says my existing links are now going through an intermediary page. Everything resolves to the right place, but looks like spiders see our new pages as being 302 redirected. Example of what's happening. Old page: www.mydomain/name-of-page New page: www.mydomain/name-of-page/ What should I do? Should I go in and 301 redirect the old pages? Will this get cleared up by itself in time?

Using the Canonical Tag
Hi, I have an issue that can be solve with a canonical tag, but I am not sure yet, we are developing a page full of statistics, like this: www.url.com/stats/ But filled with hundreds of stats, so users can come and select only the stats they want to see and share with their friends, so it becomes like a new page with their slected stats: www.url.com/stats/?id=mystats The problems I see on this is: All pages will be have a part of the content from the main page 1) and many of them will be exactly the same, so: duplicate content. My idea was to add the canonical tag of "www.url.com/stats/" to all pages, similar as how Rand does it here: http://www.seomoz.org/blog/canonical-url-tag-the-most-important-advancement-in-seo-practices-since-sitemaps But I am not sure of this solution because the content is not exactly the same, page 2) will only have a part of the content that page 1) has, and in some cases just a very small part. Is the canonical tag useful in this case? Thank you!
