Sub-Page Ranks for a Main Keyword
-
A sub page now ranks for my main key word (the file name is exact match to the key word) it completely replaced my index page in rankings.
Would 301 redirecting the sub-page to my index page (which is more informative and has a whole lot more links pointing towards it) be a good idea or vice versa? Or would optimizing that page (the sub page) be the best way to go (the sub page doesn't have single inbound link pointing to...). This happened about a week ago.
Thanks!

That's the biggest challenge with data. It can change over time either with or without additional work on our part, due to the market, as well as due to search engine factors. So the question is now - will it stay this way for a consistent period of time.

It has now been switched back...

The key word is "medigap insurance" the sub-page was not optimized at all (I just fixed it up today, the page did not have a single link pointing towards it and the article on the page didn't explain much). My site is www.mostmedicare.com

I am wondering what the keyword/keyword phrase is for your subpage, as it must be well optimized for it, at least far better than your index page.
If the page that IS coming up currently is informative, impressive, and educates the visitor on said subject, why would they not visit the main page as well? I believe they will if they need your servies. As much as we want our index page to be the main portal of entry into our site, this could be of benefit for you in some way.

301 Redirecting an internal page that you want visitors to discover is never advised as a way to drive the home page up instead.
Is the main keyword actually the most important keyword for your entire site?
Long term best practices would have it so that If it's one of the top few phrases your offering revolves around, then individual pages should be laser focused on variations of it - to the point where you have enough content across X pages that search engines see "enough of the pages across this site are on this specific topic that the home page of the site deserves to be ranked for it. And one top level page (a main navigation link) should be highly optimized for that specific phrase as well.
Ideally it's that page that should come up first in the SERPs for that phrase, followed by your home page coming up in the SERPs for it as well, but below that entry.
Alternatively, your home page should come up first, with Google SiteLinks coming up just below that. But only after you've got a number of very strong pages built around the topic.

Page ranked then disappeared
Recently there have been a a couple of pages form my website that ranked well, in top 5 for a couple of days then they disappear suddenly, they are not at all seen in google search results no matter how narrow I search for them. I checked my search console, there seems to be no issues with the page, but when I check google analytics, I do not get any data from that page since the day it disappeared, and it does not even show up on the 'active pages' section no matter I keep the url open in multiple computers.

Can I use high ranking sites to push my competitors out of the first page of search results?
I'm looking at a bunch of long tail low traffic keywords that aren't difficult to rank for. As I was idly doing a boring task my mind wandered and I thought.... Why don't I ask lots of questions about these keywords on sites such as Moz, Quora, Reddit etc where the high DA will get them to rank for the search term? The results on a SEO site or Q&A site won't be relevant and so I'd starve my competitors of some of their leads. Of course I'm not sure the effort would be worth it but would it work? (and no, none of my long tail keywords are included in this post)

Page MozRank and MozTrust 0 for Home Page, Makes No Sense?
Hey Mozzers! I'm a bit confused by a site that is showing a 0 for home page MozRank and MozTrust, while its subdomain and root domain metrics look decent (relatively). I am posting images of the page metrics and subdomain metrics to show the disparity: http://i.imgur.com/3i0jq.png http://i.imgur.com/ydfme.png Is it normal to see this type of disparity? The home page has very little inbound links, but the big goose egg has me wondering if there is something else going on. Has anyone else experienced this? Or, does anyone have speculation as to why a home page would have a 0 MozRank while the subdomain metrics look much better? Thanks!

What's the difference between a category page and a content page
Hello, Little confused on this matter. From a website architectural and content stand point, what is the difference between a category page and a content page? So lets say I was going to build a website around tea. My home page would be about tea. My category pages would be: White Tea, Black Tea, Oolong Team and British Tea correct? ( I Would write content for each of these topics on their respective category pages correct?) Then suppose I wrote articles on organic white tea, white tea recipes, how to brew white team etc...( Are these content pages?) Do I think link FROM my category page ( White Tea) to my ( Content pages ie; Organic White Tea, white tea receipes etc) or do I link from my content page to my category page? I hope this makes sense. Thanks, Bill

Dynamically-generated .PDF files, instead of normal pages, indexed by and ranking in Google
Hi, I come across a tough problem. I am working on an online-store website which contains the functionlaity of viewing products details in .PDF format (by the way, the website is built on Joomla CMS), now when I search my site's name in Google, the SERP simply displays my .PDF files in the first couple positions (shown in normal .PDF files format: [PDF]...)and I cannot find the normal pages there on SERP #1 unless I search the full site domain in Google. I really don't want this! Would you please tell me how to figure the problem out and solve it. I can actually remove the corresponding component (Virtuemart) that are in charge of generating the .PDF files. Now I am trying to redirect all the .PDF pages ranking in Google to a 404 page and remove the functionality, I plan to regenerate a sitemap of my site and submit it to Google, will it be working for me? I really appreciate that if you could help solve this problem. Thanks very much. Sincerely SEOmoz Pro Member
