404s effecting crawl rate?
-
We made a change to our site where we all of a sudden we are creating a large number of 404 pages. Is this effecting the crawl/indexing rate?
Currently we've submitted 3.4 million pages, have over 834K indexed but have over and 330K pages not found. Since the large increase in 404s we've noticed a decrease in pages crawled per day. I found this Q & A in Webmasters (http://googlewebmastercentral.blogspot.com/2011/05/do-404s-hurt-my-site.html) but it seems like the 404s should not have an effect. Is this article out of date?
What do you think fellow Moz-ers? Is this a problem?
-
It's not a problem, just fix those as soon as you can. And yes, it does affect crawl rate from what I've seen.
-
That article you mention is very up to date. but if you got "hit" by Google bot several times a day for those pages that now you return a 404 response code you will see a decrease in pages crawled per day since once Google sees a 404 response code it will not visit / hit that page that often aftre that...
-
Yes i've seen this numerous of times. Is it just 404's are are there also things like DNS playing along?
But if the amount of 404's jump up really high then for sure google turns down the speed. i guess this gives you some air to fix it in time.

Help Center/Knowledgebase effects on SEO: Is it worth my time fixing technical issues on no-indexed subdomain pages?
We're a SaaS company and have a pretty extensive help center resource on a subdomain (help.domain.com). This has been set up and managed over a few years by someone with no knowledge of SEO, meaning technical things like 404 links, bad redirects and http/https mixes have not been paid attention to. Every page on this subdomain is set to NOT be indexed in search engines, but we do sometimes link to help pages from indexable posts on the main domain. After spending time fixing problems on our main website, our site audits now flag almost solely errors and issues on these non-indexable help center pages every week. So my question is: is it worth my time fixing technical issues on a help center subdomain that has all its pages non-indexable in search engines? I don't manage this section of the site, and so getting fixes done is a laborious process that requires going through someone else - something I'd rather only do if necessary.

Please Help! Crawl & Site Errors - Will This Impact My SEO?
Hello Moz, I need urgent help. I remove a tonne of product pages and put everything into one product page to deal with duplicate content. " I checked it out and found the problem: 4 Soft 404's

Bingbot appears to be crawling a large site extremely frequently?
Hi All! What constitutes a normal crawl rate for daily bingbot server requests for large sites? Are any of you noticing spikes in Bingbot crawl activity? I did find a "mildly" useful thread at Black Hat World containing this quote: "The reason BingBot seems to be terrorizing your site is because of your site's architecture; it has to be misaligned. If you are like most people, you paid no attention to setting up your website to avoid this glitch. In the article referenced by Oxonbeef, the author's issue was that he was engaging in dynamic linking, which pretty much put the BingBot in a constant loop. You may have the same type or similar issue particularly if you set up a WP blog without setting the parameters for noindex from the get go." However, my gut instinct says this isn't it and that it's more likely that someone or something is spoofing bingbot. I'd love to hear what you guys think! Dana

Is it a problem to split anchor text with span / div etc or does it decrease the effect?
Hi, Recently I started seeing more and more anchor text with design variations within them. A noticeable example can be seen in the Distilled top menu.
Technical SEO | | BeytzNet
As you can see there is a part which is in small letters and a part with different fonts. Meaning that there is either an internal span / div / font / italic / etc. or some other attribute within the link (splitting the anchor text). Is it a problem?
Keep in mind that it will be used in the top menu on the most important links. Thanks0 -
Mysterious drop in the Number of Pages Crawled
The # of crawled pages on my campaign dashboard has been 90 for months. Approximate a week ago it dropped down to 25 crawled pages, and many links went with it. I have checked with my web master, and he said no changes have been made which would cause this to happen. I am looking for suggestions on how I can go about trouble shooting this issue, and possible solutions. Thanks in advance!

The effect of same IP addresses on SERPs
Hi All, Just wondering if anyone could shed some light on the following. If I was ranking number 1 for a term, what would the effects be of creating another site, hosted on the same server / IP, same whois info, same URL but a different TLD, and trying to get this to rank for the term also. Does G restrict search results to one IP per page or is this perfectly possible? (The term is fairly uncompetitive) Thanks, Ben
