News Archive within a site - Detrimental?
-
I have a clients site, which we publish fresh news content daily and have done for some time. this has built up a huge archive of news over the past few years. All the news resides in a /news sub folder. The most interesting news articles are syndicated through facebook and twitter.
Note: All the news is original content.
The archive is based around a chronological filing system so /news/2010/December would retrieve news articles published in December 2010.
My first question is this, in the Post Panda seo world, since the news in the archives receives little to no traffic, will these be classed as low quality pages, even though they are generally informative and timely news articles?
My Second Question, It's my understanding that a site can be penalised for harbouring low quality pages, thus would I be better to do away with my news archive of around 600+ articles and impose a rule that news is removed from the site after a set period (say 6 -12 months)?

Thats why I ask on SEOmoz, a sensible answer with sensible advice that can be easily put into action.
This had crossed my mind, however I've been staring at the woods so long, I couldn't see the trees!
Thanks EGOL.

We have a blog that publishes about six to ten short posts per day, each linking to an external URL that has great content. Most of the content that we link to is newsy rather than evergreen.
Over time that content gets stale, the number of search queries drops and some of the links go dead. This content loses its value over time.
Once each year we do a major purge of old posts, deleting a couple thousand at a time.
Before this purge is done we look at analytics to determine if any of the posts are pulling traffic from search. When we find posts pulling lots of traffic we will create a new page of substantive content about that subject or identify an existing page that is relevant. The posts are then 301 redirected to those pages. All remaining posts are redirected to the homepage of the blog.
We have been doing this for a few years and it makes even more sense now that google seems to dislike pages with short content.

Does anyone know the linking of hashtags on Wix sites does it negatively or postively impact SEO. It is coming up as an error in site crawls 'Pages with 404 errors' Anyone got any experience please?
Does anyone know the linking of hashtags on Wix sites does it negatively or positively impact SEO. It is coming up as an error in site crawls 'Pages with 404 errors' Anyone got any experience please? For example at the bottom of this blog post https://www.poppyandperle.com/post/face-painting-a-global-language the hashtags are linked, but they don't go to a page, they go to search results of all other blogs using that hashtag. Seems a bit of a strange approach to me.

Transfering Site from Http to HTTPS
Migrating all of our pages from HTTP to HTTPS. I am listing few of my concerns regarding the same: Currently, all HTTPS traffic to our Homepage and SEO page is 301 Redirected to HTTP equivalent. So, when we enable HTTPS on all our pages and 301 all HTTP traffic to HTTPS and stop current 301 Redirection to HTTP, will it still cause a loop during Google crawl due to old indexing? Will we move whole SEO facing site to HTTPS at once or will it be in phases? Which of the two approach is better keeping SEO in mind? what all SEO changes will be required on all pages.(eg. Canonical URLs on our website as well as affiliate websites), sitemaps etc.

Why is Google not indexing my site?
I'm a bit confused as to why my site just isn't indexing on Google. Even if I type in my brand name, my social channels rank and there's no evidence of my website. I've followed all of the advice I've read and gone into webmaster tools and got the Wordpress yoast plug-in but nothing seems to be making a difference! One thing I've noticed, in Google Webmaster Tools it says "Couldn’t communicate with the DNS server." in site errors. I've called GoDaddy and they said that everything is fine. A bit frustrating. Trying to work out what my next steps should be but feeling a bit lost to be honest! Any help GREATLY appreciated!

Should we dump the https from a client site?
We inherited a site that has both http and https. No e-commerce or data transfer...just html. Should we dump the https certificate? I think it might be causing issues with indexing and possible duplicate content. The https site has a certificate warning message...not good. The URL is www.charlottemechanical.com

Site verification in WMT
Hello all, I have a site and I want to set a preferred domain but when I do it says I need to verify my site but it gives me no ideas how to do that. I know that normally you have to do it when you set the account up but I had an analytics account for this domain first then just logged on with those details and I was in with no verification process. Cheers

What can we do to improve our site
Hi. I am hoping that some of you can help me with the in2town site www.in2town.co.uk The site is a news/lifestyle magazine site. The site is a cross between, huffington post, digital spy, female first and the sun newspaper. Basically the site is a news site as well as covering showbiz news, travel news, health news and advice etc What i would like is for people to look at the site and let me know what they feel i should do to improve the site to make it better for our readers and to gain more readership. I would also like to hear from people on how they find moving around the site as well as the speed of the site. At the moment the site is with an american hosting company and i am in the process of talking to UK hosting companies to move the site. The site is currently on a dedicated server. It would mean a lot if people could give me their advice on how to improve the site and make it a beter experience for our readers while at the same time being able to generate income with the site. Just a quick note, all content is original and we have a number of people who write for the site. many thanks

Multiple site in one? Recommendations?
I have 2 companies that essential do the same thing. They have different names and different domain names. One is a USA company and the other is a South American Company. My intnent was to create a single site with both english and spanish content and then create a english home page and a spanish homepage. I was hoping to direct the spanish domain name to the spanish homepage and the english to the english homepage. This way I will only have one site to maintain - one ecommerce site to maintain and can direct teh links to a single site - although they will essentially be kinda different. My question is... what are the pluses and minuses of doing this? Would I better creating 2 separate sites? is there going to be an issue with google maybe seeing duplicate content although the pages are seperate for each language? Any other considerations that I just wasnt smart enough to think of?

Site Disappeared off of Search
A friend of mine has a site (http://bit.ly/q4iWkM ) that was ranking number one for their key word (Drimnagh() and has now completely disappeared off of the ranking. I did some checking and can't see a problem. She does have duplicate meta and titles throughout but this shouldn't be a punishable offence that I know of and is something that I am going to correct with a quick plugin install. I couldn't see any redirects or code stopping search either. When you do site:URL it shows up OK as well. She is client of mine (for website not for SEO) and she is really upset about it so any help from the forum would be appreciated. This isn't even a site I did but you couldn't get a better person to work with so I am eager to help where and if possible. Guinness all round if someone solves it next time you are in Ireland
