Multi language and multi target eCommerce site in EU
-
Hi,
before I raised this question I red some other topics which were relevant to my question, however every topic had some slight difference between the various scenarios.
I run a webshop with .eu domain (notebookscreen.eu) which currently runs on 3 languages. We use geoIP to determine the user's location for the following reasons:
- language
- currency
- shipping fee
The site runs very slow during the tests, and most of the testers (including MOZ) fails since it has too many 302 redirects. We are rebuilding this part to fix this redirect and need some advice what is the best to optimise for multiple countries. As said in the title this is a shop mainly targeting EU countries, and next to the .eu domain we have 10 other country level TLD registration.
Currently we do subfolder stile. Would it be better to do subdomain per country or separate TLD for every country. Current option is the best for backlinks, I don't think second has any gains. Having dedicated TLDs can help to local SERP for every country, however we would need a lot of back-linking. Also if someone starts with the .eu page, a 3xx redirect is needed for the designated country. Different sites do it differently. Some don't care (Apple), some stay on one page and gives you local currency and shipping rates (eBay), or moves to different TLD (Amazon).
Is there any better way to determine someone's location other then GeoIP?

You can make the links manual instead of 3xx and use a pop up like, "It looks like you're from [Country].. would you like to browse with those currency and shipping options enabled?" That way they have to click to enable it and then go to the folder via a static link.
For load times, there are several CDN options out there that could help speed that side of it up... Cheers!

Changing site URL structure
Hey everybody, I'm looking for a bit of advice. A few weeks ago Google sent me an email saying all pages with any text input on them need to switch to https for those pages. This is no problem, I was slowly switching the site to https anyway using a 301 redirect. However, my site also has a language subfolder in the url, mysite.com/en/ mysite.com/ru/ etc. Due to poor work on my part the translations of the site haven't been updated in a long time and lots of the pages are in english even on the russian version etc. So I'm thinking of just removing this url structure and just having mysite.com My plan is to 301 all requests to https and remove the language subfolder in the url at the same time. So far the https switching hasn't changed my rankings. Am I more at risk of losing my rankings by doing this? Thanks!

Hreflang and canonical for multi-language website
Hi all, We're about to have a new website in different languages and locations, which will replace the existing one. Lets say the domain name is example.com. the US version will be example.com/en-us/ and the UK version will be example.com/en-uk/. Some of the pages on both version share the same content. So in order to solve it, we're about to use hreflang on each page + a canonical tag which will always use the US address as canonical address. My question is - since we are using canonical tag along with hreflang, is there a possibility that a user who is searching with Google.co.uk will get the canonical US address instead of the UK address? Or maybe the search engine will know to display the right localized address since (UK) i've been using hreflang? It is really important for me to know, because i'm afraid we will lose the high rankings that we have right now on google.co.uk. Thanks in Advance

Deindexed site - is it best to start over?
A potential client's website has been deindexed from Google. We'd be completely redesigning his site with all new content. Would it be best to purchase a new url and redirect the old deindexed site to the new one, or try stick with the old domain?

What can we do to improve our site
Hi. I am hoping that some of you can help me with the in2town site www.in2town.co.uk The site is a news/lifestyle magazine site. The site is a cross between, huffington post, digital spy, female first and the sun newspaper. Basically the site is a news site as well as covering showbiz news, travel news, health news and advice etc What i would like is for people to look at the site and let me know what they feel i should do to improve the site to make it better for our readers and to gain more readership. I would also like to hear from people on how they find moving around the site as well as the speed of the site. At the moment the site is with an american hosting company and i am in the process of talking to UK hosting companies to move the site. The site is currently on a dedicated server. It would mean a lot if people could give me their advice on how to improve the site and make it a beter experience for our readers while at the same time being able to generate income with the site. Just a quick note, all content is original and we have a number of people who write for the site. many thanks

Ecommerce site with currency selectors giving dupe content?
Hi everyone,
Technical SEO | | BeachDude
One of my ecommerce sites uses BigCommerce. They have a feature where you can add different currency buttons to change the currency that the customer can shop as. This is great because if people from the UK visit our site, they can change the currency to their own rather than US. It just ads a variable on the end of the URL string to change the currency. However, in my webmaster tools I noticed that I think i am getting a bunch of duplicate content. For example, it thinks i have duplicate title tags for the following: domainname/pages/my-cool-widget.html
domainname/pages/my-cool-widget.html?setCurrencyId=1
.domainname/pages/my-cool-widget.html?setCurrencyId=2
domainname/pages/my-cool-widget.html?setCurrencyId=3
domainname/pages/my-cool-widget.html?setCurrencyId=4 I thought about adding "rel=no-follow" but unfortunately I don't have access to this file to edit the code. Any suggestions?0
