Subdomains and SEO
-
My question has 2 parts: 1) Can you optimize a subdomain template site (a company is providing us with a template site they provide many other salespeople, but we can control the meta and content on each page), and 2) Does forwarding and masking another domain to the subdomain in question, hurt my SEO efforts?
-
this is the way I understood it - if you can add the canonical url to each page it is ok. If you can't add the canonical you shouldn't mask the url as you will be creating duplicate content as each page is accessible on 2 urls, the subdomain and your personal domain

Thanks so much for the response. Just to be sure I understand, for the mypersonalsite.com redirecting to the template site, there is a mask involved, so you never actually see the templated site's URLs.
So instead of mypersonalsite.com redirecting to templatedsite.bigsite.com, it shows mypersonalsite.com once redirected and instead of showing templatedsite.bigsite.com/page1 it shows mypersonalsite.com/page1
So does defining the canonical still work in this case? And it would need to be defined on all the templated sites URL's correct? We can access each page on the templated site, however, I'm not sure we can access the head section though, just page content.

Hi Chris
you can optimize a subdomain- although it's always better to use the main domain. In your case it depends a bit on the flexibility you have to create unique content within the provided template.
i assume that the second question is about accessing the same content using a different url - it's not necessarily a problem & can even help from SEO point of view if you are able to define the canonical url on the template site
Situation would then be: template site mysubdomain.bigsite.com - all urls have canonical to mypersonalsite.com -> all the urls of the template site will be indexed on mypersonalsite.com
if you cannot define the canonical url it's duplicate content and should then be avoided.

A dumb SEO question
Is it possible for a blog to rank only with fantastic content without any purchasing of backlinks... And how long does it take (on average) to get for example 500 active readers daily?

No-follow Links - Do they work for SEO?
Seems like some of the big sides only give no-follow links now are they still useful for building link authority? Do you have any experience? Thanks

Subdomain with higher domain authority vs. ccTLD with lower domain authority
Our website is active in many countries and we are considering if it is worth it to switch from ccTLD to subdomains. The reason is that our company.com domain has a domain authority of 65 and some of the ccTLD's like company.fr and company.de etc have a domain authority of 30. From what I have read, moving these to a subdomain structure like fr.company.com and de.company.com will give them all the same domain authority (of 65 vs 30) which is considerably higher. 1. Would a subdomain with domain authority 65 rank better than a ccTLD with authority 30 (considering all else is the same)? 2. When we 301 redirect all ccTLD's to the subdomains, will our domain authority increase (to more than 65) for company.com, given that it can benefit from all redirected links to our ccTLD's? Thanks in advance!

Root-Domain vs Subdomain Linkbuilding
Hello Mozzers! Couple of days ago I received a request to start optimizing a wordpress website, the domain itself has been around for around 10-12 years so it's it can be considered as one that has real history behind it. The page has been moved from HTML/FLASH to wordpress about 3 - 4 years ago and hasn't been any SEO maintenance on it. The site used to rank for first position with several keywords, but now understandably, it has greatly decreased. My main question would be, that when I've checked the root domain's and the subdomain's metrics with MOZ Open Site Explorer, the sub domain (with "www.") showed a PA 40 and 90 external links while the root domain (without "www.") only has 27 PA and 6 External links. I know that the 301 or server redirects only transfers about 90% of the link juice to the targeted URL but the difference between the 2 results seem way too big for me. What do you think? Is this normal?

During future link building is it more beneficial to target the root domain so the page won't lose that "10%" by redirecting the new link from sub-domain to root domain?
Is it possible to get more juice transferred? Thank you very much,

Are link exchanges bad for SEO these days? Also, is adding my site to free yet relevent directory sites a bad idea?
I operate a computer services company in Eugene, Oregon called "Eugene Computer Geeks". We do a lot of web design, and need incoming links to my site very badly. Lately I've been asking clients if they would link to me, but they almost always ask for a link in return. If we exchange links, does Google penalize my site? Would the incoming link be better for SEO if I'm not linking back to the other site? ALSO Is it possible that manually submitting my site to free, yet relevant web directories would hurt my rankings? It's not a big deal to me if it doesn't help my rankings, as I see a benefit to having my site listed, but wanted to make sure there wasn't a chance that it would hurt my rankings. As far as I know all the directories are free from SPAM, porn, warez, or anything like that. Thanks!

Is it worth editing older blog posts for SEO purposes?
The title of the question asks it all. One site I currently work on has a handful of blog posts that rank really well in the SERPS for certain "long-tail" searches. Would it be worth the time to, when I have it, to go back and edit the blogs little by little to help with SEO and building some links throughout the site to get people where we need them to go? Basically "sprucing" up the blog posts to make them more readable, more engaging and help some link building efforts within the domain. Thoughts?
