Duplicate content for manually setup blog and wordpress blog
-
We have a website where the ecommerce will not allow us to host blog. So we created our own manual blog page setup. Will this flag duplicate content on Google?
http://www.homesupershops.com/blog and http://www.homesupershops.com/blog-july have same content.
How come on a word press the same content on http://www.vizionseo.com/blog/ and http://www.vizionseo.com/blog/2011/05/how-can-your-business-rank-high-on-google-maps/ does not flag duplicate content?

Hi Vizion SEO.
How come on a word press the same content on ... does not flag duplicate content?
Why do you believe it does not?
Clearly it is duplicate content. When Google finds duplicate content within a site, they take their best guess to determine which page is the primary version for a given search, and they offer that URL in SERPs. There is not a "penalty" per se, although many people refer to it as such. Sometimes the page Google shows is not the page you wish to appear, and some may interpret that as a penalty. Also, your link juice would be divided amongst the various versions of the URLs rather then consolidated so that can be perceived as a penalty as well.
It is common for a home page to contain snippets of articles. That is what is happening on the vizionseo.com/blog page. It contains part of articles, and then you can click through to view the entire article. If you have a rather short article, then you can duplicate most of it's contents. This is normally not an issue as the home page, or main blog page in this case, has plenty of other content.
I will also point out you do have an issue on your site.

Both the above URLs point to the same page. The second URL is missing the trailing slash. This issue should ideally be resolved with the correct entry in your htaccess file on your server, but it can also be resolved by adding the canonical meta tag to your page. Until it is corrected you have a second form of duplicate content on your site.
http://www.homesupershops.com/blog and http://www.homesupershops.com/blog-july have same content. Will this flag duplicate content on Google?
Your /blog page is duplicating both of the entire articles from July. Your navigation, footer and both side bars are identical also on the pages. Clearly only one of those pages would be listed. I would recommend reducing your /blog page coverage of articles to the first ?200 words or so. You can offer a teaser of the article with a "continue reading..." link.

What to do with outdated and irrelevant content on a website?
Hi everyone, On our corporate website we have a blog where we publish articles which are directly related to our company (house heating systems and gas cylinders) and some articles which are completely irrelevant to our core business, but which might be of interest to our potential clients. Recently I've been told that it is not a good idea to include these not directly related posts to our core business, because Google might be somewhat confused at to what our core business is all about. I was advised to research this topic and think of completely removing blog posts that are irrelevant to our core business from our blog. By removing I mean completely removing pages and setting a 410 status to tell Google that it is not a 404 error but that these pages were intentionally removed. I would like to hear some independent advice from Moz community as to what I should do? Thank you very much in advance.

Duplicate Content
Hi All, I am doing work for a rug company that acts as a third party. They have close to 4,000+ products. Each rug belongs to a collection. The collection has one main description that is the same throughout every rug in the collection. Ex. One Collection has 15 rugs, all with the same description. Should I take the time and change every single description? I think the answer is yes but I wanted another opinion. Thanks

Duplicate Content From Huffington Post Blog
A client who writes blog posts for Huffington Post also wants an identical version of the blog posted to his personal site. Do you think there could be a problem of being punished for duplicate content? Would a better SEO practice be to have the client do an on-site blog just linking to the Huffington Post blog and providing information about it?

Duplicate Content Discovery
I was hit with Penguin on April 24th like a ton of bricks. Luckily my cash cow keyword was kept safe and still is today with even an increase in traffic over the year. With some other main keywords I used to rank far I fell off the board on that day. Since then I have been slowly trying to clean things up as much as I know Today I was sitting down with my coffee and Penguin mindset and I decided to use copyscape again to review duplicate content issues and something I noticed which I either didn't before or didn't think was an issue was my footer. In my footer I used a blurb from some other site in my niche a long time ago. Which I discovered they used from one of the main sites in my niche. Anyways I noticed that my footer is what kept coming up as being duplicate content and was always at an overage of 28% according to copyscape. My question is should I be worried about the footer? Is 28% a lot?

How to make use of blog networks?
I read on a forum recently that someone was using blog networks as his primary tool for SEO. I'm not sure what he meant beyond this, however... Can anyone provide tips on how I might use one, and which are some of the best? Thank you very much in advance.

Why is this store getting hurt in SERPs when they removed duplicate content?
I work with an e-commerce client who got hit hard by Panda. They are very cautious, and want small-scale tests to prove each hypothesis before committing to larger changes. Recently, we reworked content on 30 product detail pages. Before, these product pages featured some original content mixed with some manufacturer content. The change we made was to remove the manufacturer content completely from the product page, leaving about 300 words of high-quality, original content--all of which was written by subject matter experts. I assumed that Google viewed this manufacturer text as duplicate content. However, when these 30 modified pages were compared to the control, they performed significantly worse. Question 1: Does any have any idea why these pages would perform worse than the control?

Question 2: Do you have any tips for convincing this client to try another test or get the buy-in to make the larger changes that--in theory--need to happen? FWIW, this client has about 10,000 product detail pages--the vast majority of which contain just manufacturer content. I appreciate your thoughts.0 -
