Setting up a website targeted for the US
-
Hi,
As an English company we have a co.uk domain with .com domain pointing to this. We are now looking to launch a separate (new) website targeting the American market and I have been asked to do the following:
If an American or Canadian IP address visits the .com website it automatically goes to our newly created website i.e. website 2.
If a non-American or non-Canadian IP address goes to .com it automatically goes to the original website i.e. website 1.
If a user is on website 1 and clicks an American flag it takes the website user to website 2.
If a user is on website 2 and clicks on the UK flag it takes the website user to website 1.
Can anyone advise the best way to go about doing this as I feel that this could effect our search rankings. I am concerned how the search engines will penalize website 2 (original site) which has good rankings.
Thanks in advance.

First of all, let me see if I understood well the situation...
You are going to have to websites:
- .co.uk targeting Great Britain
- .com targeting USA and CA
And then you want to use IP detection for redirecting users to the "correct" website depending on their location...
Honestly, I don't like this tecnique...
- in the 90% of the cases googlebot comes from an USA IP... if you redirect via IP detection you are always redirecting googlebot to the USA/CA website, substantially not letting it to enter and crawl the UK one.
- as a user who travels a lot, I hate when a website always redirects me to the version it consider I am interested about just because of the IP address. For instance, if I am in Great Britain for travel and I want to visit the USA version of your site because I most interested in it (eg: because of currencies, or because my account is for the USA site), I would rant like a troll if you were obliging me to use the GB version.
I always consider that the best option is offering the users (and the bots) to visit the website version they want but using this "tactic": if you detect (from IP or Browser agent) that somehow located in the USA/CA entered in the UK site, you can present an alert saying >>> "We saw you're visiting us from the USA/CA. Maybe you are more interested in visiting our USA website [link to your .com version]"
This is what Amazon does.
As an alternative, use redirection based on user browser detection and not IP. That is safer in regards to googlebot.
Said that, the redirection should be automatic just the first time someone enters in your site, and not always present. With this I mean that if someone from USA enters in your .co.uk site, he will be redirected to the .com, but once landed in the .com site, he will be eventually able to click on the link pointing to the .co.uk and not being redirected again the to american version.

Google Search Console International Targeting - Works for Hungary, but not Ireland - Why?
company.com (root)

USA - lang="en" | GSC target: USA (shows US site in SERPs for "companyname" search)
company.com/hungary
Hungary - lang="hu" | GSC target: Hungary (shows Hungarian site in SERPs for "companyname" search)
AWESOMENESS company.com/ireland
Ireland - lang="en" | GSC target: Ireland (shows US site (doh!) in SERPs "companyname" search)
NOT RIGHT! It is our theory [please weigh in!] that because we don't have a company.com/usa folder, the TLD targeting (EN) is overriding other English language sites in some manner. In other words, the reason it's not overriding Hungary is because it's a different language. What must we do to get the Irish site ranked for "companyname" searches and to show by default in Ireland?0 -
How do you optimise a website for European traffic?
I have a design portfolio website here https://www.nicholsoncreative.com/ which uses a .com but is currently configured through the Search Console to appear in results for Google.co.uk. I am going to be restructuring the website and optimisation and I want to bring in more traffic/enquiries/business from around Europe. As there's no Google.eu, and as Google also serves results based on the searchers geographic location it would seem difficult to structure and optimise content so that results can be found across all of Europe. I assume simply switching to a .eu domain extension for my own website wouldn't solve the problem? I also assume that creating content in different languages would be a logical (if time consuming) option? Are there any other tried and trusted techniques that can be used to target traffic throughout Europe? I'd appreciate any advice.

How should I handle hreflang tags if it's the same language in all targeting countries?
My company is creating an international version of our site at international.example.com. We are located in the US with our main site at www.example.com targeting US & Canada but offering slightly different products elsewhere internationally. Ideally, we would have hreflang tags for different versions in different languages, however, it's going to be an almost duplicate site besides a few different SKUs. All language and content on the site is going to be in English. Again, the only content changing is slightly different SKUs, they are almost identical sites. The subdomain is our only option right now. Should we implement hreflang tags even if both languages are English and only some of the content is different? Or will having just canonicals be fine? How should we handle this? Would it make sense to use hreflang this way and include it on both versions? I believe this would be signaling for US & Canda visitors to visit our main site and all other users go to the international site. Am I thinking this correctly or should we be doing this a different way?

Will website with tag hreflang pass link juice to other country/language version of website?
For example, I have a website XXX.com and I made hreflang tags to other country/language versions of website: ru.XXX.com (for Russia/Russian) XXX.com.ua (for Ukraine/Russian) ua.XXX.com (for Ukraine/Ukraine) Then I will acquire links to XXX.com. The question is: will XXX.com pass link juice to websites ru.XXX.com, XXX.com.ua and ua.XXX.com. Will these websites rank in their countries if I will acquire links ONLY to XXX.com? I looked at https://support.google.com/webmasters/answer/189077?hl=en, but haven't found what google think about that. Thank you in advance. I will appreciate your help.

I have a website targeting multi language and multi regional users. For example, my main site is www.abcd.com which is in English and targeting US. I have the same content in English which is targeting UK and India with www.uk.abcd.com and www.india.abcd.com. I want to avoid content duplication and help search engines to show the right pages on the country level searches. I have researched a bit and have come to conclusion of using re alternate tag. Can someone help me with how to place the codes for the same. Many thanks Mozers!

Google Webmaster Tools - Geographic target - Time till change
One of my clients is targeting UK customers. They have UK IP address. I then noticed that they had their Geographic target set to "Target users in: United States". I advised them to change this. Anyone know: How this could have been set, the client says they didn't do it? How long will it take for Google to see this has been changed? Thanks in advance. Justin
