What is the difference between anchor text and external links?
-
I understand you 'Pro's' may fins this a silly question. But I'm a visual learner and I can't seem to grasp this.
I've read the pages MOZ has provided on anchor text and external links and my question is, how are they different? And which one is more important to seo? Can someone who has a great ability to simplify things, please help me understand this. They seem very similar to me but, I know there has to be more to it.
External links: External Links are hyperlinks that point at (target) any domain other than the domain the link exists on (source)
**Anchor Text: **Anchor text is the visible characters and words that hyperlinks display when linking to another document or location on the web.
Thanks is advance, Lauren.

Hahaha, yeah, not my personal choice of reading material, either.
-
That helps me a lot, I get why I would use the word 'Study', because it does look like i'm sending them to an insurance home page. Which isn't as interesting as a study ( Or at least as interesting as an insurance study can be.. ) Yawn.
-
When I say "put the link around" I mean "use these words as anchor text," if that wasn't clear from context.
-
Oh! Sorry, I was looking at the wrong link. Yeah, that looks fine. Personally, my preference would be to put the link around the words "a study" or "a study by the National Association of Insurance Commissioners," because only having the link around "National Association of Insurance Commissioners" may lead readers to think the link goes to the NAIC homepage rather than the study. What you've done, though, is entirely acceptable.
-
Sorry, I didn't explain that well. The anchor text I created takes you to another domain: http://www.iii.org/fact-statistic/homeowners-and-renters-insurance from my domain.
Here's the text from the blog, with the anchor text in it:
According to a study by the National Association of Insurance Commissioners (NAIC), the average homeowner’s insurance premium rose by 6.0 percent in 2013, following a 5.7 percent rise in 2012. The average renter’s insurance premium was unchanged in 2012, after rising 1.1 percent the previous year.
Here's the url to the blog: http://thumannagency.com/blog/05-05-2016/3778
Sorry if i'm not saying this correctly...
-
Sure. That's one entirely legitimate way to do it. If it were me, though, I'd do something along the lines of:
The Thumann Agency has been proudly serving families and businesses in Dallas for over 20 years.
In HTML, that would look like:
The Thumann Agency has been proudly serving families and businesses in Dallas for over 20 years.
That said, neither may actually be necessary. Since it's a blog post on your own site, the site's own navigation makes it pretty easy to find your homepage.
-
Would you be so kind as to tell me if I've done this correctly, this is my first attempt at using anchor text in my blog.
Any helpful criticism would be greatly appreciated.
http://thumannagency.com/blog/05-05-2016/3778 The link is down towards the bottom of the page.

Well, this is the place for 'em. Feel free to post a thread whenever you need to! Welcome to the Moz community. ^_^
(One tip: If a response answers your question, click the "Good Answer" link in the lower-right. It marks your question as "answered," and it gives the responder a few extra MozPoints. I work here, so I'm not too concerned, but it's a good thing to do.)
-
Hallelujah!!!! Thank you for that. A good teacher is one that knows how to simplify and now, without a doubt, I can say I understand it.
I may have a few more questions for you now..

Hi there, Lauren!
An external link is one typeof hyperlink—specifically, a hyperlink that links from one domain to another. The opposite is an internal link, which links from one page on a domain to another page on that same domain. A link from moz.com to inbound.org is an external link because moz.com and inbound.org are different domains, but a link from moz.com/community/q to moz.com/community/q/what-is-the-difference-between-anchor-text-and-external-links is internal because they're both on the domain moz.com.
Anchor text is a component of all text links, whether they're internal or external. In a traditional hyperlink that appears on the page as a bit of underlined blue text, the anchor text is that blue text itself.
This is an internal link to moz.com/community/q. The destination URL is moz.com/community/q, and the anchor text is "This is an internal link to moz.com/community/q." It's internal because both the page we're currently on and the page the link points to are on the domain moz.com. Here's another link to moz.com/community/q: The Moz Q&A Forum. It has the same destination URL as the previous link, but the anchor text—"The Moz Q&A Forum"—is different.
Does that clear things up at all?

Handling External links to articles in a blog
I have a blog that has it's own articles but then also want to feature third-party sites that have my op-ed content on them. Wondering what is the best practice for handling external links. The reason we want to do this: Make sure our followers and people who subscribe to our blog see all our content (especially when a third-party "high authority" publisher is featuring articles from our authors We also want to be able to get a ranking for the article title when someone searches for it on Search Engines. i.e I write an article for hubspot called "my article about something". When googling "my article about something" I want to see both the Hubspot listing (where my article originated on) as well as a link to my website where I show an abstract (original abstract) and then the link links to the hubspot article. For example: www.myblog.com/listing (renders a listing of articles with links to each individual article) If showing an "abstract" for the blog article and then linking out to the third-party source (where content is featured) www.myblog.com/category/post-title (renders actual article page) When showing an individual post-title page what are the minimum requirements (META TAGS, length or amount of characters ,etc) Thanks in advance!

How do we optimise links from a parent company to a subsidiary on different domains
So we are the agent for an industrial company. They don't have a great website (well its pretty but doesn't rank) and have 5 product pages with a variety of products on each. We've taken those products and turned them into 50 pages with good on page optimisation. Now they've just agreed to give us a link on each page and I'm trying to figure out what the best text and link will be. As far as I can see there are three options Visit our agent for X region - sending to the home page If you are from X region you can request a sample of product group from our agent - sending to home page and product category page on our site If you are looking for X, Y, Z or P, Q, R in this region contact our agent there. - sending to home page and individual product pages The aim of this is to boost my page authority as 98% of the top 10 in SERPS have pages with zero authority and rely on the on page optimization and DA. Is this the best approach or are there other better ways of approaching the problem. It's worth noting that there is a total separation of control and ownership of the websites. I'm also starting to work with them to improve their on page optimisation and get links from their parent company to increase link juice

Link building external trusted help out there?
Hi there guys and Girls, I am a newbie to the seo world but learning quickly. Unhappy with seo services offered for startups I have taken on the role myself for my website. I think so much of what can be learnt online here I can implement myself with a few hours of work each week. So my dilemma! I have lots of ideas of for content which i know will be valuable and I was considering outsourcing just for link building (the long haul work) The trouble is I am wary of who to use and if such service is out there? I have tried searching on o'desk and freelancer etc but I guess i am too frightened of spammy links or postings on irrelevant sites. I guess initially I am looking for someone who can help my link building campaign whilst I build up my own blogging contacts etc. Does anyone know if these types of services exist? and if any are recommended for small companies? Thanks Michelle

Anchor Text Choices
Hi There, Looking for some advice on the choice of anchor texts. Is it smart to include your domain name in addition to key words? What are the pros cons of including both vs. just doing a key word? Thank you!!!

Link Pharming
My company has been using an SEO company for a while and have built up our pagerank to a 6. However, we have noticed that they're involved in link pharming - they're buildng extra websites and linking to our site on them. We are not happy with this as we know it will only be a matter of time before Penguin hits us. The contract with the SEO company is coming up for renewal soon and we're thinking of cancelling it. However, we are not sure if the company will delete all our backlinks, which will probably decrease our PageRank too. Has anyone here ever had a similar experience? What did the SEO company do when you cancelled the contract? Does anyone here work for an SEO company and what do you do when someone cancels your service?

How Important is Placement of Anchor Text
I'm working on a series of guest posts to help promote a site. These are competitive, high quality posts from a well-respected resource in the industry. I placed the author introduction at the front of the posts, with anchor text for the keywords we are targetting (e.g., "This is a guest post by John Doe, a [keyword] who ... and writes about [keyword]."). I understand that having the anchor text in a prominent location - such as near the front of the post - will probably be more authoritative than a sentence at the very end. My question: how significant is this difference? The blog that I am posting on wants to include author information at the end only and only have one link using the site name (which doesn't contain keywords). The post I sent had two deep links using keyword-rich anchor text, placed at the beginning. I am trying to decide whether to walk away and keep shopping the material around.
