Category Pages

I'm debating on what the best category structure is for a recipe website and was looking to get some advice. It's a recipe/travel/health fitness blog but recipes reign on the site.
Should it be:
Option A
website name\recipe\type of recipe\URL of specific recipe
or
Option B
website name\type of recipe\url of specific recipe (and just cut out the 'recipe' category name)
Any advise would be appreciated!
Thanks!

Hi there
There's a great URL structure resource from Moz located here, as well as a great information architecture resource here. I suggest checking it out.
Generally it's better to be shorter with your URL structure. I would use option B if it were my choosing, because you could easily making it...
www.domain.com/italian-recipes/chicken-parmesan
Otherwise you are doing...
www.domain.com/recipes/italian/chicken-parmesan
You create a deeper page level with option A, making pages "less" important and farther away from the domain, which is the most important aspect of your URL.
Keep pages and crawl depth as shallow as possible so that pages don't get buried and lost in the crawl. My opinion, go option B, but also review the resources above.
Hope this helps! Good luck!
Patrick

ECommerce SEO for product categories and sub-categories
Hello everyone, We run a Magento store, and I have a general question about SEO-eCommerce. We recently launched a new site where we've modified the menu navigation for product categories. So let's say in the past we had a main category called 'Jackets' in the top navigation bar, and once you were on the jackets page you had a few subcategories to choose from. On the new site, we reworked the navigation bar in order to get our customers there in fewer clicks. So right away in the top bar, the customer can click 'Casual Jackets', 'Leather Jackets' and 'Winter Jackets'. We no longer have an internal link to the parent category 'Jackets'. Now here's the question:
Intermediate & Advanced SEO | | yacpro13
-Do I 301 redirect 'jackets' to one of the sub-categories of my choosing?
or
-Do I keep the main category 'jackets' even though we don't actually link to it internally? I see pros and cons for both, and I'd like to proceed in the way that will be most beneficial from a rnakings point of view for all jackets categories. Thanks!0 -

Ranking for homepage & category page?
We lost our Google organic ranking (position 1 - 3) for our highest converting key phrase (cotton tees) in February. The ranking was for our homepage (brandname.com) which is very image heavy and doesn't have much readable content. We noticed that all of our competitors are ranking above us for their category page, not their homepage. The difference between us and our competitors is that we specialize in this key phrase and they just offer one category of the key phrase. For example, we only sell cotton tee's and they sell cotton tees, handbags and shoes. When we dropped we noticed that Google began showing our homepage AND category page in the results, so we pointed our brandname.com to brandname.com/cotton-tees canonically. The idea was that this would assure that the homepage and category page were not competing with each other. The homepage was not really optimized for cotton tees so we thought this might help. 1. Is there any harm in removing the canonical and allowing both pages to rank? (We're also working on redesigning the homepage to add more readable text & optimize for cotton tees.) 2. Our homepage URL used to be "brandname.com/cotton-tees" and we consistenly ranked between 1 and 3 for cotton tees during that time. We modified the homepage URL because it seemed spammy and are now just "brandname.com". Does it make sense to go back to the URL with the key phrase in it if that is our main product and we want to rank for it?

410 pages
Do you need to optimize a 410 page like you do for 404 pages? What does a visitor see when a page is 410 compared to a 404?

Which page to target? Home or /landing-page
I have optimized my home page for the keyword "computer repairs" would I be better of targeting my links at this page or an additional page (which already exists) called /repairs it's possible to rename & 301 this page to /computer-repairs The only advantage I can see from targeting /computer-repairs is that the keywords are in the target URL.
