Smae Category Descriptions but in Different Cities
-
Hi,
I was curious, if I have a guide with 20 categories, and that guide is in 10 different cities, can I have a category description for each city that simply swaps out the city name?
Seattle Big Widgets
We offer the largest selection of widgets in the Seattle area. We have small widgets, medium widgets, large widgets. We have so many widgets, most people in Seattle are blown away by our selection.Portland Big Widgets We offer the largest selection of widgets in the Portland area. We have small widgets, medium widgets, large widgets. We have so many widgets, most people in Portland are blown away by our selection.
Would this be considered duplicate content, if it's followed by distinct city listings?
Writing 20 decriptions would be nicer than writing 200. Just trying to think about SEO, resources, best use of time, etc.
Thanks

Thank you so much for your feedback.

Thanks so much for your feedback.
What I was not sure about was that if we are providing listings and the ability to filter based on certain criteria, will users really read the content, and will they find it valuable.
It's like if you are searching for hotels in Seattle, you know you want to go to Seattle, so how much text would you actually read about how great Seattle is, when you just want to narrow in and find the perfect hotel? do you know what I mean?
We will have blog posts for our top categories as well, so hopefully that helps as well.
Cheers

Good question. We're undertaking a similar project now. It's in your best interest to avoid any possibility of duplicate content, even if it's just a little bit of content.
A simple description such as your example along with local listings is not enough content to make the page a quality resource in the eyes of Google. Ideally you would tailor each category with unique and relevant content. I would recommend a few more paragraphs and unique images. It will be time consuming, but you'll get much better SEO results.
I would also recommend you interlink categories for nearby cities. I hope these suggestions help and wish you the best on your project.

Hi there,
altough is tecnicaly different, the differece is minimum and it might be considered as automated data. It is risky.
You can do those 200 descriptions, do them. I'd not take the chance of google seeing them wrong.
Hope it helps.
GR.

Too many posts in a category?
Does having a post in too many categories have a negative effect on SEO? I have some posts in around 15 categories on my site.

Duplicated Products on Homepage and category pages
I have some of my best sellers located on the homepage of my websites. These same products may also appear on the category page as well. On the home page and the category page, the product title, short description, thumbnail, etc. are exact duplicates and I am afraid this is hurting me. I would appreciate any advice you may have on how to deal with this issue. These are some of my best sellers and most often, the homepage will outrank the category page for the product. Thanks in advance, lordhenry

Onpage optimization different outcomes for keyword with or without accent
I am a little bit confused with the results of the onpage analysis. I am trying onpage optimization for a spanish word which has an accent.. The results differ from Grade A, if i use the keyword with an accent, e.g. ropa premamá (the spanish word for maternity wear) to Grade C if I run the report without the accent ropa premama. I assume that most users will rather search for the keyword without accent. Would this mean that I need to change my keyword to non-accent or doesn´t it matter?

What is the most effective eCommerce product / category structure?
Hi all, We sell musical equipment, and we have been debating about how to structure our website in terms of products and categories. These are our two options: Each category page lists sub-categories _and _all of the products contained within each of these sub-categories, so e.g. the "Guitars" category page would contain links to "Electric Guitars" and "Acoustic Guitars" as well as a big list of electric and acoustic guitars. Each category page lists only its sub-categories, unless it is a "leaf" node, in which case it lists all the products, so e.g. category "Guitars" just has two links - to "Electric Guitars" and "Acoustic Guitars" - and no products. Option 2 means customers don't see products until they've decided which category they want, which doesn't seem ideal to me, but SEO-wise, which is best? Thanks! Alex

Missing meta descriptions on indexed pages, portfolio, tags, author and archive pages. I am using SEO all in one, any advice?
I am having a few problems that I can't seem to work out.....I am fairly new to this and can't seem to work out the following: Any help would be greatly appreciated 🙂 1. I am missing alot of meta description tags. I have installed "All in One SEO" but there seems to be no options to add meta descriptions in portfolio posts. I have also written meta descriptions for 'tags' and whilst I can see them in WP they don't seem to be activated. 2. The blog has pages indexed by WP- called Part 2 (/page/2), Part 3 (/page/3) etc. How do I solve this issue of meta descriptions and indexed pages? 3. There is also a page for myself, the author, that has multiple indexes for all the blog posts I have written, and I can't edit these archives to add meta descriptions. This also applies to the month archives for the blog. 4. Also, SEOmoz tells me that I have too many links on my blog page (also indexed) and their consequent tags. This also applies to the author pages (myself ). How do I fix this? Thanks for your help 🙂 Regards Nadia

How unique do product descriptions need to be?
I'm rewriting approximately 10,000 product descriptions, but for feasability it's useful to sometimes reuse some of the phrases that are there (and on other websites as they come straight from the manufacturer -eg. key features), how unique does the content have to be - are we talking 100%, 75%, 50% for it to be effective in google? Same question goes for the product title! Many thanks.

Meta descriptions
Hi, I have placed meta descriptions in a CMS for a client and afterwards checked with the SeoMoz tool "Page elements" that these are embedded correctly. However when checking the SERP for certain pages Google has "composed" the listing from other content than the meta description. What may be the reason, and how to avoid this?
