.com or .me for freelance business?
-
Hey there,
Which domain do you think is better and why?
(1) surnamename.com or (2) surname.me?
Since Google treats both the same in terms of the rankings, my biggest concern is about the branding. (1) is longer but is .com (people usually see .com as more trusted one). (2) is shorter, easier to remember, but less tech savvy people might be confused with .me.
Purpose of the site is personal/freelance profile. Other domain versions are already taken.
Shoot the ideas! Cheers, Martin

I would really try to get a ".com" even if you have to slightly alter your URL to not just be your brand name. Alot of people will add their city or a service that they are associate with or provide after their brand name ("www.abcwebsitedesign" or "adcnewyork" as examples).

I would argue that .me is easier to remember since, .com is basically an embedded second nature to add after a brand name in terms of direct or navigational traffic. However, since you're interested in .me you should consider creating the .com and forward the .me domain back to it in-case you would like to use it on business cards or other material.
I personally think .com is the way to go and it is almost instinctive to type that in as searcher or user.

Hi Martin,
I believe I would. What about name-surname.com?
If the namesurname.com is taken, there is a risk that your own namesurname.me will be often confused as .com and you will just send traffic to the .com domain owner.
Obviously, I don't know your intentions but perhaps make the 'surnamename' order your signature/brand - sign your articles in this order, if you have videos, introduce yourself in this order, make your social media named after it. This say it might be a bit unusual, but perfectly memorable and maybe seen a bit 'cool/different'.
Are you considering surname.com?
Thanks
Katarina

Hi Katarina,
Thanks for your response.
The thing is that the version _**"**name surname . com" _is already taken. Otherwise, I would definitely go for this option.
That is why I am not 100 % sure about the _"surname name . com"_version.
Would you go for it anyway istead of **"surname . me" **?
Thanks, Martin

Hi Martin,
Why do you think .me is easier to remember? I agree, people might remember the surname (instead of name & surname), but at the same time they might assume it's .com. And if this goes to 'page not found', will they figure out it's .me?
I think you cannot beat .com - it has a psychological effect and people expect professional websites to be .com. Is there an option for you to have the format namesurname.com? Or is the domain taken? That's what works well in general.
.com is a global standard for business online and many businesses fight for and pay thousands for .com's. I hope this helps with your decision a bit.
Thanks.
Katarina

Instagram for small manufacturing business?
Hi all, We're a small business based in the UK that manufactures a range of PVC strip curtains and rubber site safety products. We have a presence on twitter, facebook, LinkedIn & google+... I've been considering Instagram for a little while now as I know we would have plenty to post (strip curtains are seen in multiple industries, it'd be great to post unusual applications that we've supplied to...) but I'm wondering what experience anyone has had with Instagram in an industrial manufacturing business... Is the audience there or would it be a waste of time for us? I've briefly looked through # but I'd like to know first-hand experiences!

.land extension or .com extension? Please help!
hi, its me again. I bought 2 domains for my new site I want to build. My keyword is: "BabyHazelGames" babyhazelgames.land ( for me it sounded like "the land of baby hazel" etc ) PlayHazel.com ( short .com domain, still says what the sites about ) If u check first page for this keyword u see most of the sites are EMD-s or filler partial EMD ( on .com-s)Someone told me to buy a EMD since I fight with EMD-s on first page, and its the only way I have a chance! I bought The games license, theme license and all of these. That was alot of money, and I dont want to put all my money and work on the wrong domain name. Please help me decide between these 2; Thanks!

Should I remove our videos from DotSub.com to try & boost our Wistia videos?
Okay all you video SEO lovers, I had a thought today that I thought would make an interesting question. I have been using the tools at DotSub.com to transcribe our videos. The tools are great, and even better, free. We have about 80 videos on DotSub and all of these videos are also on our YouTube channel. Once I've completed the transcription, I've been exporting the .srt file and uploading them to YouTube to replace the God-awful machine transcriptions (sorry Google, but they are baaaadddd). Anyway, sometimes our DotSub video will outrank the same YouTube video, sometimes not. The 80 videos on DotSub have amassed about 10,000 views and a couple of translations...which is nice, I guess? Recently, we've begun experimenting with Wistia. Here is a search term for which our YouTube and DotSub video results pretty much flood page 1: "studiolive webinar" All of the DotSub videos also exist as Wistia videos on our Website and blog. For obvious reasons, we would rather have our Wistia videos rank in those three positions which right now are dominated by the DotSub versions. Should I remove the content from DotSub in order to try to get the Wistia videos to rank instead? Or should I leave them all there? I should probably add that we do have Wistia videos that are outranking both Dotsub and Youtube versions of the exact same videos...so I know that's possible. I'm just wondering if by leaving all of these videos up at DotSub if we are cannibalizing our potential at ranking for videos that link back to our site? What do you think?

Googe+ personal profile & business page conundrum
I have asked this question before and am still seeking help. My apologies for being repetitive and hopefully not too pesky but I am sincere in my search for guidance. I am looking for advice on how to manage my personal G+ profile along with my business G+ page. My challenge is the coordination between the two and getting people to add our biz page to their Circles instead of to me personally through my personal profile. Google+ requires that we have personal profiles- especially for authorship, but it's my business that I want to represent and promote. I do have the Google+ badge on my website and blog posts. And I am duplicating my posts on both the personal and business pages. I have joined a couple of communities and know that i need to find more and engage in those. And also, another question this brings up: in terms of the social signal aspect for our company website/blog, does it matter where I am building my Circles?

Using Multiple Locations for Google Business/Maps
Hey MOZers, I currently work for a company with several other offices in other countries. Is it possible to set-up Google 'Business' and Google 'Maps' pages so when a user in a given country queries 'our business' on either Google 'Search' or Google 'Maps' they will receive the relevant business information for that country. For example, if an internet user in Canada enters a query for 'our business' in Canada (and we have an office in Canada) is there anyway to set up our Google Business page and Google Maps page so that user receives the contact information for the Canada office, rather than the US office? Conversely, if someone in the United States enters a search query for 'our business' is there a way to set it up so that the user receives our address in the states?

Yahoo Directory, BOTW, BBB and Business.com for local SEO?
I've heard conflicting reports about using these paid directories for SEO purposes. I am a local Realtor with a website and blog. My site is on page one but near the bottom since the national sites dominate the top. Would these directories help me for local seo purposes? Does Google consider these paid links and therefore devalues them? How difficult is it to get into these directories since they can decline a submission and there goes my money? Are these directories worth the money? In total it would be like $1200 do get on all. I've already done what I believe to be a lot of good seo practices. Emphasis on I believe since I'm no expert. Just learning as I go. Now I'm up against the big brands in real estate and meet to compete. Any tips if these directories are worth it and anything else I should look to do?

Google+ business pages and Schema.org
Hi All, I'm an SEO for a company that runs a number of brands. I'm in the process of setting up the Google+ pages for these brands and decided to watch the Microformats & Schema.org - Real life Use Cases - Mozinar by Richard Baxter and the Online Reputation Management: Branding for SERP Domination Mozinar by Rhea Drysdale to help understand the best way to achieve this. One of the suggestions by Richard Baxter was to include the authorship schema.org, but I can't see how this can be done for an organisation instead of an individual. My question is, how do you manage authorship when your not able to link websites to Google+ business pages, only profiles? How have you managed this on SEOMoz for example? Hope you can help. Thanks Jojo
