Redirect Chain Issue
-
I keep running into a redirect chain issue trying to get a non-https/non-www domain to forward directly to the https/www domain on an Apache server. For background, we are forcing https and forcing www, but it appears the non-https/non-www domain is first redirecting to https/non-www and then redirecting again to the desired final https/www version of the domain. (Hope I am making sense here)
I am trying to find code to add to my .htaccess file that will perform the following...
301 Redirect
http://example.com directly to https://www.example.com (without 1st redirecting to https://example.com)
http://www.example.com directly to https://www.example.comAny experts in this with any thoughts?
Thanks,

Hi,
I was wondering exactly the same thing as above - in MOZ it classes this as a redirect chain.
Is this an issue that it picks up that isn't really a problem?
we are using:
RewriteRule (.) https://%{HTTP_HOST}%{REQUEST_URI} [R=301,L]
RewriteCond %{HTTP_HOST} !^www.MYSITE.co.uk [NC]
RewriteCond %{HTTP_HOST} !^$
RewriteRule ^(.) https://www.MYSITE.co.uk/$1 [L,R=301] -
There is rewrite code to do that in one "hop". But the best practice for this has changed from what the pagespeed tools recommend, Fitz. You should actually leave the redirect as is, and insure you have HSTS properly implemented for the website. For HSTS to work properly/securely, the site must redirect to the HTTPS version of the same hostname before then redirecting to the canonical hostname. Which is exactly what your site is doing.
The only disadvantage to the extra hop is that there's a very small delay for an additional server calll, but the implementation of HSTS eliminates a server call and some certificate negotiation time. So breaks about even or even a little quicker, especially if you submit to the Preload list once you're certain HSTS is working correctly. Note that HSTS should be implemented using a very short TTL initially so you can be sure things are working correctly before switching to a long TTL and the preload list.
Do you already have HSTS configured for the site??

Tracing Redirects to a Site
I wonder if anyone has used any tools where you can trace the redirects pointing to a site? I know there are a number of tools out there that can be used to check where a URL redirects to, but I was wondering if anyone has used a tool where I could trace all redirects with the final URL? I am using this for competitor research so I don't have access to Analytics or Webmaster Tools.

How to avoid a redirect chain?
Hi there, I am aware that it is not good practice to have a redirect chain but I am not really sure hoe to do it (on Apache). I have multiple redirects in a chain because on the one hand I had to redirect because the content of the site got a new URL and because on the other hand I changed from http to https. Thus I have a chain like http://example.com via 301 to http://the-best-example.com via 301 to https://the-best-example.com via 301 to https://greatest-example.com Obviously I want to clean this up without loosing any link juice or visitors who had bookmarked my site. So, I could make three separate redirects: http://example.com via 301 to https://greatest-example.com

http://the-best-example.com via 301 to https://greatest-example.com
https://the-best-example.com via 301 to https://greatest-example.com But is there a way to combine it? Can I use an "OR" operator to link the 3 conditions to this one rule? Any other suggestions? Thanks a lot!!!0 -
Is there a tool to see all redirects?
I'm thinking this is a silly question, but I've never had to deal with it I thought I'd ask. Ok is there a tool out there that will show all the redirects to a domain. I'm working on a project that I keep stumbling on urls that redirect to the site I'm studying. They don't show up in Open Site or ahrefs as linking domains, but they keep popping up on me. Any thoughts?

If we have several hundred domain names currently using a park page, would we be better served having them redirect to our corporate homepage for SEO purposes?

Canonical URL Issue
Hi Everyone, I'm fairly new here and I've been browsing around for a good answer for an issue that is driving me nuts here. I tried to put the canonical url for my website and on the first 5 or 6 pages I added the following script SEOMoz reported that there was a problem with it. I spoke to another friend and he said that it looks like it's right and there is nothing wrong but still I get the same error. For the URL http://www.cacaniqueis.com.br/video-caca-niqueis.html I used the following: <link rel="<a class="attribute-value">canonical</a>" href="http://www.cacaniqueis.com.br/video-caca-niqueis.html" /> Is there anything wrong with it? Many thanks in advance for the attention to my question.. 🙂 Alex

Odd Google Indexing Issue
I have encountered something odd with Google indexing. According to the Google cache my site was last updated on April 6. I had been making a series of changes on April 7th and none of them show up in the cached version of the site (naturally). Then, on the 8th, my rankings seem to have dropped about 6 places and the main SERP is showing a text that isn't even on the Web site. The cached version has the correct page title from the page that was indexed on the 6th. How do I learn where Google is picking this up from? There is a clean page title tag on my Web site. I've checked the server, etc to see what's going on. The text isn't completely unrelated, but it definitely impacted my ranking. Does Google ever have these hiccups when indexing?
