Redirecting duplicate .asp pages??
-
Hi all,
I have a bit of a problem with duplicate content on our website. The CMS has been creating identical duplicate pages depending on which menu route a user takes to get to a product (i.e. via the side menu button or the top menu bar).
Anyway, the web design company we use are sorting it out going forward, and creating 301 redirects on the duplicate pages.
My question is, some of the duplicates take two different forms. E.g. for the home page:
www.<my domain="">.co.uk
www..<my domain="">.co.uk/index.html
www.<my domain="">.co.uk/index.asp</my></my></my>Now I understand the 'index.html' page should be redirected, but does the 'index.asp' need to be directed also?
What makes this more confusing is when I run the SEOMoz diagnostics report (which brought my attention to the duplicate content issue in the first place - thanks SEOMoz), not all the .asp pages are identified as duplicates.
For example, the above 'index.asp' page is identified as a duplicate, but 'contact-us.asp' is not highlighted as a duplicate to 'contact-us.html'?
I'm a bit new to all this (I'm not a IT specialist), so any clarification anyone can give would be appreciated.
Thanks,
Gareth

ASP is dynamic. HTML is simply formatting of content. ASP streams HTML on output to the browser. You can do much much much more with ASP than with flat up HTML.

Excellent, thanks for your reply John. Just for my own personal understanding, what's the difference between a .html page and a .asp page? Cheers, Gareth

Yeah, if you're serving duplicate content under different URLs like this, it's best if you 301 redirect them all to the same URL. So for your home page, you should redirect www.<my domain="">.co.uk/index.asp to www.<my domain="">.co.uk, for the same reason you want to redirect the www.<my domain="">.co.uk/index.html to www.<my domain="">.co.uk. You should pick one URL for your contact us page as well, and redirect the duplicate versions to that. Roger may not have found that other version of your contact us page, but if it's duplicate content, go ahead and redirect the duplicate URLs to the URL you prefer for that page.</my></my></my></my>
The reason you do this is to keep all the link juice you're getting for those pages consolidated in one place, so rather than having two pages with some link juice competing on the search result pages, you can have one page with all the link juice which will rank better.

Videos on duplicate content editing
Hi, I am looking for good videos with visual examples on how to edit duplicate content issues. I am editing a law firms website, and for the most part the duplicate issues seem to show up in tag URL's on the blog. I feel like I have maybe half of the picture figured out, but I am not sure how or where to make changes. I have gone through the crawl diagnostic issues and a few articles, but I know I am a visual learner. Therefore a video might be helpful. Does anyone have any suggestions on where to get started? Thanks.

What is the difference between the Rank Tracker and the On-page Optimization page?
Both of them track keywords. In the Rank Tracker, you add each keyword manually and you associate it with a URL. For On-page Optimization page, the URLs are generated automatically based on searches and traffic?

Crawling One Page
I set up a profile for a site with many pages, opting for setting up as a root directory. When SEOMoz crawled, they only found one page. Any ideas for why this would be? Thanks!

Blogger Duplicate Content? and Canonical Tag
Hello: I previously asked this question, but I would love to get more perspectives on this issue. In Blogger, there is an archive page and label(s) page(s) created for each main post. Firstly, does Google, esp. considering Blogger is their product, possibly see the archive and tag pages created in addition to the main post as partial duplicate content? The other dilemma is that each of these instances - main post, archive, label(s) - claim to be the canonical. Does anyone have any insight or experience with this issue and Blogger and how Google is treating the partial duplicates and the canonical claims to the same content (even though the archives and label pages are partial?) I do not see anything in Blogger settings that allows altering these settings - in fact, the only choices in Blogger settings are 'Email Posting' and 'Permissions' (could it be that I cannot see the other setting options because I am a guest and not the blog owner?) Thanks so much everyone! PS - I was not able to add the blog as a campaign in SEOmoz Pro, which in and of itself is odd - and which I've never seen before - could this be part of the issue? Are Blogger free blogs not able to be crawled for some reason via SEOmoz Pro?

HTTP 404 for 404-page?
Hi Mozzers! SEOmoz just finished crawling one of my websites and this crawl found 3 errors. One of these errors was the (custom) 404-page, because of the http-status 404. What's you suggestion about this? Should a 404-page have a status 404? Thanks in advance for your suggestions!
