Vanity URL vs domain URL
-
Hi guys,
Our CEO is having an interview with a known broadcaster on radio. During the interview he will mention a specific URL www.example.com/marketingcampaign that we want track on Google Analytics, therefore behaving like a vanity URL redirecting to the actual URL www.example.com/resources/primary-keyword-2018.
Would this work the same way a vanity URL in terms of tracking or not such as following guideline here ? I am asking because vanity URLs are supposed to be completely different domain name that gets purchased and in our case it is the same domain name just with a different URI.
thanks guys!

Hi Taysir
You can catch all the data you need by analysing this URL in analytics: www.example.com/marketingcampaign
Why do you need to 301 somewhere else? It doesn't make any sense.
UTM parameters could only be used if you append an existing URL (eg the homepage) with tracking. for example, if you had an email campaign or Facebook. As yours is aural (listened to on the radio) you wouldn't be able to convey it so it would be useless. Worth noting though.

Hi Nigel,
Thanks for your response.
So you're recommending not to 301 redirect www.example.com/marketingcampaign to www.example.com/resources/primary-keyword-2018 but the whole purpose is to capture the listeners who remember this one time URL(this will only be mentioned for this radio show) within Google Analytics. If I don't redirect this URL then I will never know how many radio listeners came to our website, right?
Or am i missing something here?
Finally could you clarify this bit _"You could just use a preferred landing page and use UTM parameters to track in Analytics if you knew which source it was coming from." _What is the setup and how would this work?
Thanks for your time!

Hi Taysir
I can understand why you would want to do this and this is a perfectly acceptable way of doing it. However, I'm not sure why you would want to redirect it to another page. Why not just put all the information required on that page www.example.com/marketingcampaign?
There may (depending on who you listen to - I'm with Rand) up to 15% loss of link juice passing through a 301 redirect.
Also by publicising the 'vanity URL' it may well be indexed by Google but then de-indexed in favour of www.example.com/resources/primary-keyword-2018. because of the 301 redirect. When people searched for that page it wouldn't exist!
Intentionally setting up a URL that 301s is just bad practice and you risk Google not respecting it and listing both URLs anyway - so any ranking could go out of the window.
So in conclusion - fine having the 'vanity URL' (as you call it - it's a bit of an old-fashioned expression - any URL these days could be considered a 'vanity URL' - it was in the days when URLs had long strings of numbers and non-relevenat characters) but don't bother 301 redirecting. Use that single URL to provide all the information you need. You will be able to see it in Google analytics along with all of the source data.
(If you do decide to redirect - I wouldn't - do it in the htaccess file as it will all be seamless. Don't do it by java on the 'vanity URL' page. )
You could just use a preferred landing page and use UTM parameters to track in Analytics if you knew which source it was coming from.

Cross domain tracking Google Analytics
Hi there, Got a question on cross domain tracking: We have a couple of TLD's to serve localized content to our visitors, next to our main .com TLD where our app is running as well in a subdomain. Situation is this: Local sites:

marketingsite.be
marketingsite.com.br
marketingsite.fr Main site: marketingsite.com
app.marketingsite.com Conversion gets triggered when somebody ends up in app.marketingsite.com/firstuse for example. People can sign up at the local site filling in their email but they end up in app.marketingsite.com/firstuse Reading this article on cross domain tracking I'm getting a bit confused on the setup of the tracking code itself. The sample code provided shows these two lines: ga('require', 'linker'); ga('linker:autoLink', ['maindomain.com','targetdomain.com']); Now the question 🙂 Is it correct when I think that maindomain should be replaced with our local TLD's on every one of those, and that targetdomain is where the conversion happens? In this case the .com site?0 -
Is It Possible to have Cross Domain Tracking on Two Different Accounts?
Good afternoon to all, I have this kind of dilemma regarding setting up tracking code on two different accounts, namely bioglass.com with GA Code UA-12345678-1 where all the product information has been listed and shopbioglass.com with GA Code UA-87654321-1 where the prices are located and transaction takes place. Both of them are connected since if you click the buy button on bioglass.com for a specific product, it will automatically redirect to shopbioglass.com where the prices and transactions comes into place. Dilemma: I want to check how many conversion took place from bioglass.com to shopbioglass.com. I know they have different GA Code but is it possible for me to have a cross domain tracking for this?? What are the possible remedies if not? Thanks to all 🙂

Homepage on page 2 for site:domain
Hi all, today I noticed that our homepage is located on page 2 if you do the site:domain query. As far as I know, the site:domain results mirror the importance in the eyes of Google. Some time ago, our homepage was the first result. I have to say that we do not often have changing elements or new content on the homepage, it is more like a static page. But still the most linked to page on the domain... What conclusion can I come to? Is our homepage of lower importance to Google than some time ago? Is it a problem for SEO? As we backed down our advertisments, the traffic from branded keywords fell the last months - could this be an explanation? And, most important: do I have to worry? (Besides, the SEO-traffic is fine and growing..)

Hello, I've noticed that our sites domain authority has dropped enormously this past week according to Open Site Explorer. It also shows us as having lost about half of our backlinks. Google webmaster tools doesn't show a corresponding drop in links and we haven't done anything to our domain recently. Anyone have any ideas what might have happened? Tagging URLs Linkbuilding and anchor links
Hi, I am going to publish a press release on a number of different websites. First and foremost, I want to build anchor links back to website for specific keywords. Secondly I want to measure clickthrus from each site using parameter tracking in GA. I want to know if I put in a url with ?utm_source=xxx, will this have any impact upon my linkbuilding efforts? i.e. will search engines attribute the keyword to the long url with tracking or the url without tracking. I understand that everything from the ? mark is ignored. However, i just want to double check before I publish release. Thanks for your help. Mik
