Crawl errors - 2,513 not found. Response code 404

Hi,
I've just inherited a website that I'll be looking after.I've looked in the Search Console in the Crawl errors section and discovered thousands of urls that point to non- existent pages on Desktop. There's 1,128 on Smartphone.
Some are odd and make no sense. for example:| bdfqgnnl-z3543-qh-i39634-imbbfuceonkqrihpbptd/ |
Not sure why these have are occurring but what's the best way to deal with them to improve our SEO?

You do want to reduce the number of 404 pages, as they can increase your business's bounce rate. ,
we use screaming frog to regularly check for any of these 404 pages, we done this for a demolition business, and we managed to reduce the companies bounce rate.

Istvan has given some great advice here - one other thing I would add about the gibberish URLs though: especially with the format of these, it's possible that the site may have been the victim of a hack.
Make sure you get the site scanned for malware or other hacking activity and going forward have a security expert ensure that the site is secure (especially if it's using a platform like Wordpress which is vulnerable to hackers).

Hi James,
First of all you need to categorize these 404 pages, some may come from website sections that were deleted in the past, and haven't been addressed. Other 404 URLs could appear through domain redirects to your website. (unfortunately, these are harder to find, process and resolve).
For the first category (when sections have been deleted, moved, etc) you will have to ask yourself which is the correct way to resolve the issue? 301 redirect to most relevant URLs? Or just 410 and let search engines know that your page are deleted, and URLs should be removed from index. Please don't start redirecting every single 404 URL to your homepage, or any irrelevant page, or you will be creating soft 404s.
Regarding the /insertgibberishurlhere type of URLs, you should check what kind of domains are redirected to your domains (I have seen domains that had this kind of 404 not found errors via massive domain redirects to a project). First of all, if this is the case, you need to ask yourself, what are you redirecting to your website. If the domains are not in your hand, you could also redirect all of these to a 410 status code url on your website.
Oh, and the obvious version: crawl your website with tools as Screaming Frog, and make sure you are not creating the 404 URLs yourself. (almost forget about this version)
Let me know, if you have further questions.

Crawl at a stand still
Hello Moz'ers, More questions about my Shopify migration...it seems that I'm not getting indexed very quickly (it's been over a month since I completed the migration) - I have done the following: used an Seo app to find and complete redirects (right away) used the same app to straighten out title tags, metas and alt tags submitted the sitemap re-submitted my main product URL's via Fetch checked the Console - no reported blocks or crawl errors I will mention that I had to assign my blog to a sub-domain because Shopify's blog platform is awful. I had a lot of 404's on the blog, but fixed those. The blog was not a big source of traffic (I'm an ecomm business) Also, I didn't have a lot of backlinks, and most of those came along anyway. I did have a number of 8XX and 9XX errors, but I spoke to Shopify about them and they found no issues. In the meantime, those issues pretty much disappeared in the MOZ reporting. Any duplicate page issues now have a 200 code since I straightened out the title tags. So what am I missing here? Thanks in advance, Sharon

Google Crawling Issues! How Can I Get Google to Crawl My Website Regularly?
Hi Everyone! My website is not being crawled regularly by Google - there are weeks when it's regular but for the past month or so it does not get crawled for seven to eight days. There are some specific pages, that I want to get ranked but they of late are not being crawled AT ALL unless I use the 'Fetch As Google' tool! That's not normal, right? I have checked and re-checked the on-page metrics for these pages (and the website as a whole, backlinking is a regular and ongoing process as well! Sitemap is in place too! Resubmitted it once too! This issue is detrimental to website traffic and rankings! Would really appreciate insights from you guys! Thanks a lot!

Schema Markup Errors - Priority or Not?
Greetings All... I've been digging through the search console on a few of my sites and I've been noticing quite a few structured data errors. Most of the errors are related to: hcard, hentry and hatom. Most of them are missing author & entry-title, while the other one is missing: fn. I recently saw an article on SEL about Google's focus on spammy mark-up. The sites I use are built and managed by vendors, so I would have to impress upon them the impact of these errors and have them prioritize, then fix them. My question is whether or not this should be prioritized? Should I have them correct these errors sooner than later or can I take a phased approach? I haven't noticed any loss in traffic or anything like that, I'm more focused on what negative impact a "phased approach" could have. Any thoughts?

Absurdly High Crawl Stats
Over the past month and a half, our crawl stats have been rising violently. A few weeks ago, our crawl stats rose, such that the pages crawled per day worked out to the entire site being crawled 6 times a day, with a corresponding rise in KB downloaded per day. Last week, the crawl rate jumped again, such that the site is being crawled roughly 30x a day. I'm not seeing any chatter at there about an algorithm change, and I've checked and double-checked the site for signs of duplicate content, changes in our backlink profile, or anything else. We haven't seen appreciable changes in our search volume, either impressions or clicks. Any ideas what could be going on?

WebMaster Tools keeps showing old 404 error but doesn't show a "Linked From" url. Why is that?
Hello Moz Community. I have a question about 404 crawl errors in WebmasterTools, a while ago we had an internal linking problem regarding some links formed in a wrong way (a loop was making links on the fly), this error was identified and fixed back then but before it was fixed google got to index lots of those malformed pages. Recently we see in our WebMaster account that some of this links still appearing as 404 but we currently don't have that issue or any internal link pointing to any of those URLs and what confuses us even more is that WebMaster doesn't show anything in the "Linked From" tab where it usually does for this type of errors, so we are wondering what this means, could be that they still in google's cache or memory? we are not really sure. If anyone has an idea of what this errors showing up now means we would really appreciate the help. Thanks. jZVh7zt.png

Wordpress Website + 404 Errors
Hi everyone, I like to do a bit of auditing for our clients using SEOMoz. Once client that's using a Wordpress website had reported over a couple hundred 404 errors. However, when checking out the links, all the webpages (that I've tested) loaded just fine. Does anyone know why this would be the case? I thought, perhaps, the website might have gone down when it was crawling, but I have no evidence to back this up.

Google Plus Places Error
We have a large amount of clients and when we are updating their Google Plus Places listing, the ad is still presented as active, however it is not live on Google and when you click to view the listing we get this message 'We currently do not support this location' I have researched this and found many people are having this issue, but no solutions as of yet. Can anyone shed some light on to this because some of our clients are not thrilled at the moment. Thanks Jon

Wordpress SEO Errors - Any advice?
Hi all! My site is on the WP platform and I'm having a crawl error. Wondering if you guys could possibly help me figure out what's going on? I have a good number of 404 errors where the links seems to be appended and I can't figure out why. I've scoured my individual posts and cannot seem to find the broken link? The crawl error looks a bit like this: http://preciousthingsphotography.com/2007/12/10/chicago-family-photographer-welcome/http:%2F%2Fpreciousthingsphotography.com%2F2007%2F12%2F10%2Fchicago-family-photographer-welcome%2F You can see that my original link is somehow being doubled with the slashes being replaced? This is happening on all of my posts. Any ideas as to what could be going on? Thanks so much!
