Best way to handle related content links in a sidebar?
-
My site contains tens of thousands of articles, studies, multimedia files, biographies, etc. To assist users with finding content that might be related to the page they're on, I use a side bar with 'also of interest' links to other, similar content on my site. This is, of course, pretty standard practice.
Search engines -- Google in particular -- index these pages and then include the text in the sidebar links in search results. So, for example, on a given page I may have 20 links to related content, and the text in those links might be, 'A story about subject ABC.' When I search for 'A story about subject ABC,' Google returns not only the page titled (and containing the content) 'A story about subject ABC.' but also every page that links to it and happens to have that link text in the sidebar.
What is the proper way to handle this kind of thing?

That sounds like a great approach.
The effectiveness is going to be impacted by "how you do it"..... Big newspaper sites make their living from getting visitors to read more pages so visit some like NYTimes, LATimes, CNN, etc to get ideas on how they present.... Recommended, most read, most emailed, popular, etc links.

Managing Removed Content
I am a Real Estate Developer. Once a home goes off market (is sold), I had been using a 404 for that page. The problem: When the home goes up on market again, google will not re-index the new page (same URL) I have also tried to manage it a different way. Instead of removing the page, I left it as-is. At some later point time, the house goes back up on the market. The page is refreshed with new content. However, google decides to use cached version. Please note in either case, the property appears on the main page for a period of indexing. I have been doing this for 10 years, the problem is increasing with time.

What is the best tool to view your page as Googlebot?
Our site was done with asp.net and a lot of scripting. I want to see what Google can see and what it can't. What is the best tool that duplicates Googlebot? I have found several but they seem old or inaccurate.

Are links from main page to inner pages will affect on ranking?
About 3 weeks ago I converted index.html to index.php. Both are 301 redirect to main url. Also I have about 70 links on main page pointing to internal pages. The Website is about 11 years old,and was on active link building . Is this conversion from html to php and also 70 links pointing to inner pages will affect on ranking?Since all links are passing juice to inner pages.

Is it too late to change an IP from the linking c-block?
My main web development company is linked to many of our clients and our clients link back to us using footer links back. We obviously have a high volume of c-block relations. If I change my main site's location to a different server will it make any difference or is it too late?

How to best correct cannibalization?
I apologize if this has already been answered, but after reading several posts on cannibalization, I can't seem to find what I am looking for. The site in question is www.urbanitystudios.com and in particular the term "western wedding invitation". We rank in the top 30 for this term in Google, but Google has indexed a particular product, versus our western wedding invitation collection page. The product that is indexed for this term: http://www.urbanitystudios.com/Designs/western-wedding-invitations-p-1527.html The page that we would rather be indexed: http://www.urbanitystudios.com/Designs/western-wedding-invitations-c-95_179_181.html After running an onpage report in SEOmoz tools for the collection page, we recieve an A grade, but get a warning on the cannibalization line item. As you can see, we name each product within that collection as "Western Wedding Invitation-x" (and have done this for other product categories...not good). After a good head slap, we realized that we are confusing Google as to what should be the main page. If we rename our products, the product's URL will change-Do we do a 301 for those products? If we rename our products, do we take out the words "Western Wedding Invitation" entirely or can we say "x-Western Wedding Invitation"? Or. because cannibalization is deemed a "low priority" in the reports, do we let things be and work on getting links to the collections page vs the individual product? Any insight would be most appreciated.

How does the "first link" rule work with the "reasonable surfer patent" when it comes to the main navigation for a website?
In trying to figure out navigation for a new website, I am struggling with the first link rule vs. the reasonable surfer patent where the first link rule implies that Google "counts" the first link to a page including navigation, and the reasonable surfer patent that implies that navigation links carry less weight than body copy links. What is the best solution for creating main navigation so that it doesn't take away from the body copy links?
