Main Nav Redirects Issue: Unnecessary Evil or Better Solution
-
Hi,
I'm somewhat stumped on the best course of action for our navigation menu.
Our site is "divided" into two areas; informational and transactional. Because of compliance, transnational users have to be geo targeted; therefore, we serve them a specific page (we have 6 different regions: uk, aus, eu, etc). If users visit informational side, it's not geo specific.
Example:
Within our main nav, we don't specify the geo transaction page and use a generic https://site/money/ (page doesn't exist) then when a user clicks that link, we'll detect their location and serve up a 301 redirect to the correct geo page. This has obviously caused a ton load of unnecessary redirects and a waste of powerful link equity from the header of the site. It's been recommended to dynamically change the linked URL in this header based on the location of the user.
That sounds good but what about Google? Since we can't detect Google crawler IP, we would have to pick a default geo URL like /uk/money. If we do that, the other regional URLs suffer link equity.
How do we minimize redirects and make Google happy for all our geo pages.
Hope this makes sense and thanks for your time!

How to setup redirects
Hi Guys, If you're doing an SEO migration and have multiple versions of the same page example: Version 1: http://naturesway.com.au/superfood/super-maca-powder Version 2: https://naturesway.com.au/superfood/super-maca-powder Version 3: https://www.naturesway.com.au/superfood/super-maca-powder And you want to redirect them to a new URL (new site): New Site: https://www.naturesway.com.au/nw-superfoods-maca-powder-100g How would you ensure you redirect all the different versions of URL (versions 1,2,3) to the new URL on the new site? Cheers.

Best practice to redirect http to https
I have an SSL certificate on our domain but at times some search results still list the HTTP version. Clicking on this then warns the user about security and they leave. To avoid this I am using this in the htaccess file to redirect all HTTP visits to the https version. RewriteEngine On

RewriteCond %{SERVER_PORT} 80
RewriteRule ^(.*)$ https://domain.com/$1 [R,L] Is this ok? I notice on Moz toolbar it give a 302 temporary redirect I am thinking this isn't good and needs to be a 301 maybe? What is the best practice in this situation?1 -

How to decide on which site to 301 redirect
Hi there I'd like your opinions please! My client currently has their website at not-very-good-url.it which has a really good link profile they also have duplicate sites at: much-better-brand-name-url.it and much-better-brand-name-url.com but both these other sites have only a handful of links in. How important do you think a better brand url is? And therefore do you think it would be better to 301 to a better brand URL and take the risk that the link profile will get hit? Or leave the main site where it is and 301 the other two to it? Many thanks

Redirecting a Page from Domain A to Domain B
We have a page on Domain A, an established and well-ranking website, that would be more appropriate on Domain B, a site that we launched about two years ago. This page ranks well, pulls nice search traffic and has traffic from external links. We would like to move the page and its traffic from Domain A to Domain B using a 301 redirect. Have you ever done this or have you heard of how it has worked for someone else? Thanks!

Lost Google rankings for the main keywords
Hello everybody, I love seomoz and was enjoying all the benefits it has, was reading Q&A and implementing new marketing strategies for my website. I would really appreciate if anyone could explain my situation. The website, to which I devoted last 12 months of my time, was suddenly dropped from it's main keywords to nowhere 2 days ago, it does not look like a "dance" because some of my competitors lost their rankings too. I think its a penalty. The site http://goo.gl/3VTMq is almost 2 years old, of the highest quality content. I've been adding content slowly over 24 months, building backlinks slowly, the rankings also were going up slowly. Here are some of the keywords I've been ranking for: car insurance companies - 12, best auto insurance companies - 1, top car insurance companies 1, cheap auto insurance - 16, low cost auto insurance 4,lowest auto insurance - 2, and many more... According to seomoz, I have no major problems with on-site seo, I have low bounce rate, high pages/visit and high time on site. There is only one left - incoming backlinks. Google says that it just can't hurt you, but I think this is the only explanation of my problem. My backlinks consist of everything - from high quality contextual backlinks, to lower quality comment backlinks. I used Press Release services too.. This problem is like a nail in my head, I look forward to hearing your response. Thanks in advance, Vaz
