Best cross linking strategy for micro sites?
-
Hi Guys.
I created a micro site (A design showcase gallery) away from the main website to attract a lot of links in my space from competitors. It works so well it has become a valuable resource in my industry and I believe I will keep it running and adding content to it.
Is the best SEO strategy for the main site simply to link from each page to the main site? Or should I be looking at something else?
Thanks,
Alan

Thanks Russ, that's just the kind of information I need to know
If I raise the value of the micro site will it not increase the value of the link? Or again do you not see it being worth the effort?I do not mind being too overt with the link as it has become such a good resource that competitors are linking to it even knowing we are behind it.
Another reason to maintain the site is it generates a lot of good click through traffic.A second related question as I dig into this deeper.
As I mentioned, we received a lot of links from some high value sites to individual sub pages on the micro site. After 6 months, could I look at adding a 301 from those pages to my main site? Maybe a with a duplicate of the original content being linked to...And lastly, a lot of my showcase content is getting copied and pulled into "Best 50..." posts with no link backs. I have emailed and asked with moderate success to get links back.
Has anyone a strategy for increasing back links in a situation like this? Maybe hidden or overt watermarks? (Not too overt or it will lower the value to current visitors).Or perhaps I should be looking at a more radical option of moving the entire micro site into a sub domain or sub directory of my main site...
Sorry for the stream of questions. New to the more technical aspects of SEO and trying to put a strategy around what started on a whim.

You really only need 1 link, preferably from the home page. If anything, I would make it look like your main site was just being featured. That being said, it seems like an awful lot of work to get a single link, regardless of whether it had attracted links from your competitors.

Best practices for controlling link juice with site structure
I'm trying to do my best to control the link juice from my home page to the most important category landing pages on my client's e-commerce site. I have a couple questions regarding how to NOT pass link juice to insignificant pages and how best to pass juice to my most important pages. INSIGNIFICANT PAGES: How do you tag links to not pass juice to unimportant pages. For example, my client has a "Contact" page off of there home page. Now we aren't trying to drive traffic to the contact page, so I'm worried about the link juice from the home page being passed to it. Would you tag the Contact link with a "no follow" tag, so it doesn't pass the juice, but then include it in a sitemap so it gets indexed? Are there best practices for this sort of stuff?

Internal Links
In OSE, it is reporting that i don't have any internal links to my homepage. In the header on every page is my logo in the top left hand corner which links back to my homepage. Shouldn't this mean then that every page should link to the home page? Similarly, internal pages which link from my main nav aren't showing up as having any internal links in OSE. Any ideas?

Best way to retain banklink values when moving site?
Hi all, I want to get some opinions on what the best practice is when transferring backlink values from an old site to a new one. On the old site, I currently have a product page and this particular product has multiple models all listed on the one singe page. However on the new site, every model of this particular product has its own page. These product model pages would have relatively similar content apart from several key details which differentiates the models. Firstly would you guys recommend this splitting of models of the same product to different pages? If so, my initial thought process is to 301 redirect the old product page to the new model page that is most popular, and adding rel canonical tags to the other model pages. Would you consider this best practice? Or are there better ways I can be doing this to retain backlink values without also getting penalised due to possible content duplication? Thanks! Have my site been penalised ?
Hi, I recently hired a link builder (who works for a digital marketing agency and wanted to earn some extra cash ) to do some link building for me on keyword Carpet Cleaner Hire Basically , May my ranking for this work has moved from 29 up to 13 , then down to 500 + and now up to 67 ?. It's been all over the place and I am worried that maybe google thinks its unnatural or to many links etc. I looked at some of the work this chap did and there was a log of bookmarks done , apparently to increase social awareness and some articles on random forums I never heard of but the articles didn't look to good and in my eyes were a little spammy.. I don't have any messages in WMT saying I have been penalised or anything but I am naturally worried that this chap may have caused damaged and that I was manually penalised. I have since asked him to stop immediately.. does this sound normal for the ranking to be all over the place in this manner when link building ? How can I tell if I have been manually penalized in any way ? What;s the general consensus ?. Should I contact google or leave it and see what happens ? Other keywords seems to be okay though. Any advice much appreciated. thanks Sarah.
