URL Duplicate Content Issues (Website Transition)
-
Hey guys,
I just transitioned my website and I have a question. I have built up all the link juice around my old url styles. To give you some clarity:
My old CMS rendered links like this: www.example.com/sweatbands
My new CMS renders links like this: www.example.com/sweatbands/
My new CMS's auto-sitemap also generates them with the slash on the end. Also throughout the website the CMS links to them with the slash at the end and i link to them without the slash (because it's what i am used to). I have the canonical without the slash.
Should I just 301 to the version with the slash before google crawls again? I'm worried that i'll lose all the trust and ranking i built up to the one without the slash. I rank very high for certain keywords and some pages house a large portion of our traffic. What a mess! Help!

Hi Paul, did you find a good way to automatically do the trailing slash redirect?
-
Paul--you may be able to automate this using the rewrite module or just a few lines of PHP. Check out the SEOmoz "how to" for 301 redirects. Scroll down to the "SEO Best Practices".
The article advises that the fastest way to make the switch is to use the PHP header function. If you aren't using PHP (like wordpress or Joomla) than look at the instructions for editing the .htaccess file.
It's a little dense, but hopefully this can save you hours of manually typing in the new URLs in a text doc

thank you - Apache.
-
Paul--there are some automated options to avoid rewriting the lines by hand. What kind of server are you running? Windows? Linux? Let me know and I'll try to throw a script your way.
-
Josh, Thank you. I was going in that direction but just wasn't sure. I'm gunna have to add a lot of slashes here in a minute. Anyone else have any input?
-
Paul,
I understand your situation seems messy! Good news though--this should be a relatively simple fix.
A 301 redirect by definition preserves all your link juice. IMO, you should 301 all of the "no slash" pages to the ones with slashes. This will keep your site consistent as you continue to produce content under the new CMS.
As for canonical: technically it won't make a difference, but as a best practice, I would change the canonical page to the one with the slash. This avoids calling attention to a page that will ultimately redirect. Since the new "slash" page is going to inherit all of the "no slash" link juice (via 301), it is appropriate to label it as "canonical".
Even if you were to see a slight fluctuation in your ranking, don't be alarmed--nothing will have changed in the eyes of the search engine.
In short: 301 to your heart's content and keep producing good content.

New website on new url?
We have a new website on a new url (been up for around 2 years now) and our old website is slowly fading in the background, we are now at the point where the money is still ok but we are having issues running both side by side, we have a calculator on each page and are thinking about removing this and adding a box with please order from our new site here (with url of similar page). Now the issue is we don't want to link for SEO purposes and google hammer us (thinking of no - following these) and we also have a penalty we got in 2012 on the site but we did get out of this, would this cause any issue to the new site?

Duplicate Content Issue WWW and Non WWW
One of my sites got hit with duplicate content a while ago because Google seemed to be considering hhtp, https, www, and non ww versions of the site all different sites. We thought we fixed it, but for some reason https://www and just https:// are giving us duplicate content again. I can't seem to figure out why it keeps doing this. The url is https://bandsonabudget.com if any of you want to see if you can figure out why I am still having this issue.

Duplicate video content question
This is really two questions in one. 1. If we put a video on YouTube and on our site via Wistia, how would that affect our rankings/authority/credibility? Would we get punished for duplicate video content? 2. If we put a Wistia hosted video on our website twice, on two different pages, we would get hit for having duplicate content? Any other suggestions regarding hosting on Wistia and YouTube versus just Wistia for product videos would be much appreciated. Thank you!

Duplicate Content Errror
I am getting a duplicate content error for urls for the "tags" or categories pages for my blog. These are some the URLs that SEOmoz is saying are errors, or duplicate pages. http://sacmarketingagency.com/blog/?Tag=Facebook http://sacmarketingagency.com/blog/?Tag=content+marketing http://sacmarketingagency.com/blog/?Tag=inbound+marketing As you can see, they are just the pages that are aggregating certain blog post based on how we tagged them with the appropriate category. Is this really a problem for our SEO, if so any suggestions on how to fix this?

New website with slightly new urls
Hi we recently designed our website in work and changed some of the urls. the old site used to be http://www.example.ie/contact-us.htm now it's is http://example.ie/get-in-touch The problem we are having is with sitelinks (the ones auto generate in the serp) ie: about, contact us, team etc etc. Once cliked on, these OLD links are all going to 404 pages because of the change of url. Help with this would be greatly appreciated - I was thinking of blocking these old sitelinks in google web master.

Different TLD's same content - duplicate content? - And a problem in foreign googles?
Hi, Operating from the Netherlands with customers troughout Europe we have for some countries the same content. In the netherlands and Belgium Dutch is spoken and in Germany and Switserland German is spoken. For these countries the same content is provided. Does Google see this as duplicate content? Could it be possible that a german customer gets the Swiss website as a search result when googling in the German Google? Thank you for your assistance! kind regards, Dennis Overbeek [email protected]
