Separating words in URLS using hyphens vs. "no separator"
-
Does it matter if I use hyphens in URL versus. "no separation".
Ex
www.mysite.com/someproducts or
www.mysite.com/SomeProductsvs.
www.mysite.com/some-productsThe last is perhaps more readable by humans, but does it make any SEO difference using one or the other?

Love those examples, brightened up a Tuesday morninig.

This makes me wonder whether one can ever get extra mileage out of word merging, for SEO or branding purposes. keyphraSEOlogy.com sticks out in my mind...

Suggested title tag:therapist: You need it if you can't read it.
-
lets not forget - therapist.com

I know many people disagree with me on this one, but I would go big and get it fixed once and for all. The problem is only going to be worse when you get more content on the website.
Good luck with the work!
-
Agree - this is the issue. Especially the "space" separators definately needs fixing, so the question here is related to deciding the new strategy on this.
- thanks for taking the time to check it out :-).
-
Awesome. Love seeing real world examples.
-
Well. It's a lot of work and entails some risk to redirect many files. That being said, I have redirected thousands of URLs over the last couple of years and have yet to see it fail.
While it is a lot of work to change many URLs, I really appreciate consistency on a website, and prefer all URLs to follow the same structure. So I would probably redirect all the URLs.
I suppose you are working with the Bruel & Kjær website - and I can see there are several types of URLs now - no hyphens and with space as a separator. Adding yet another type of URLs will be at least somewhat confusing.
-
Exactly - Don't touch it. Start with new pages and you'll be fine. Even Google admits that 301 may not always pass all the goodness across.
-
If you already have a big structure running on a "no-separation" setup don't change it. The upside will not outweigh the potential disruption you cause. Do it for your new pages only.
-
My real reason for asking the question is, that I have a rather large site using the "no separation" method, and I wonder if it is worth the effort to change it.
So - I think hypenation is better for readability, but it will be quite a job to do it propertly, so I'm not sure if changing to hypenation it is worth it or not (with 301'ing etc).
I'm leaning towards using it for new pages (except this make the site look somewhat inconsistent).
-
The difference in interpretation by search engines will not be huge, but it's still worth sticking to the more readable hyphenated version. Also you don't risk the search engines misreading some urls due to new unwanted words forming from other words in a "no separation" scenario.
-
Hi there
There won't be any first order SEO difference. But there are some second order benefits to the hyphened URLs. As they are more readable by humans, they tend to be clicked more often in SERPs and gain more natural links.
Best,
Thomas

Writing <200 word pieces of content in a 7.5 hour day
My employer has a content writer who is currently working on writing unique descriptions for many pages, on the order of around 150-200 words per piece of content. A recurring theme in this content is to write a list of features such as "it does X, X, X, X, X and X", which can sometimes happen a couple of times during the content and takes up a decent chunk of wording. This content does not require in-depth research over and above reading the about us page of some sites and looking at what services they provide, as well as some quick details like their payment and delivery methods etc. As well as that the writer also writes the Meta Description and then uploads these to a CMS. There are no other tasks. Considering the writer is doing this 5 days a week, 7.5 hours a day, and isn't getting paid a poor or trainee-type wage, what would you say would be an acceptable amount to achieve on the average day? The current average works out to around, or slightly less than 8 of these pieces of content each day. Thoughts?

Using Product Descriptions in Meta Description
Hi All We have over 10000 Products and a while ago we spent some time adding Product Descriptions to the Product Pages, For Example we have Product - Black Snazaroo Face Paint Product Description - Great for Childrens parties, fundraising events, Halloween or other festive faces. An easy makeup to apply and remove. All Snazaroo face paints are Non toxic, Fragrance free and Skin friendly. Snazaroo is suitable for all skin types, however it is always recommended you do a skin patch test on a small area before full application. Unfortuantly our Meta Descriptions really need some work, for example this same page contains the following meta descriptions We realise this could be holding our site back. Is it ok to use the same Product Description inside the Meta Description Tags also, for example can we use the Meta Description for this Page - Thanks

Google Authorship and the "Fishkin" Outburst! Sorry Rand ;)
Should companies now shift away from creating great content and invest the time and money into something else? After Rand tweeted his frustration at @JohnMu in relation to "Authorship CTR's", it got me thinking - should we really be blogging as much as we should? https://twitter.com/randfish/status/481948721031024641 I'm certain Google ditched author profile images to improve "mobile UX" and "CTR's" for "paid advertisers". So what I would really like to know is - should small businesses continue to focus on developing great content? How has your marketing strategy changed?

2 URLs pointing to exactly the same content
Hi guys As far as I know if you have 2 websites with exactly the same (100%) content with 2 URLs which are not pointing to any other URL should attract penalisation from google, right? well, there is such a case and it was online for long time but the bad guys are in top of organic search and it does not seem to bother google at all! I don't want to list them here; it is extremely annoying and frustrating as I worked hard to get in higher search but seeing this thing is extremely frustrating! any advice on this? thanks

How much do you pay for a 300+ word blog article?
I am considering outsourcing some of the blog writing and would like to get some idea of what is a reasonable amount to pay someone for writing say a 300-350 word article? Also any recommendations on where to find good writers? Thanks!

Should a business blog be on a separate site or on the ecommerce site itself?
Hey there. I'm a new Pro member and this will be my first question on the Q&A. Thanks in advance for your responses. I'm the owner of an ecommerce site that sells custom candles. www.prometheancandle.com in case anyone wants to take a peak. I've become somewhat of an expert on all-things-candles over the past 4 years and I am thinking about starting a candle related blog. My question is this. Should I build this blog on the ecommerce site itself, say @ www.prometheancandle.com/blog.php, or should I devote a separate site to answering candle related question, history of candles, etc? At first, I was thinking that the blog should remain on the ecommerce site so readers would have easy access to the shop to be able to purchase products. But then it occurred to me that people who may be interested in reading up on candle history, candle making, meditation & candles, etc., may not want to go to an obviously ecommerce site to do that. I know Google values informational sites more than ecommerce sites (at least I think they do), so that encourages me to lean towards the separate site. Well, I may have just answered this question myself, but I'd definitely be interested to hear feedback and opinions. Thanks so much guys and I look forward to hearing from you.

Can you use creative commons non-commercial images on a company blog?
Does anyone know if it is okay to use creative commons images on your company blog if they are under the Attribution-NonCommercial-NoDerivs 2.0 Generic license. Technically you are using it on a commercial site, but you are not directly making money from the image or selling it.
