Cross-domain canonical
-
HI,
We've got a German e-commerce site on an .at domain and would like to have a copy on a .de domain as we expect higher conversions for German users there. The idea now would be to make use of the cross-domain canonical tag, create a "duplicate" on the .de domain and add a canonical tag on all sites and refer to the original content on the .at domain. That would mean the .de won't rank, but German users could see the .de domain, Austrian users the .at domain in the address bar and everybody could feel "at home" ... that's the theory.
What do you guys think? Valid strategy?

See today's Whiteboard Friday... Rand talks about cross-domain canonical with examples.

Servus, Tom
Thanks for your reply. Right, AdWords would be the first thing to think of ... in any other way we have thought of, we're always running into duplicate content issues within our sites (apart from the issues with other sites selling the same products and using manufacturer texts as our client does).

Well, it depends! Use of the rel=canonical tag sounds fine to me, I agree they'll feel more 'at home' with a .de domain.
However, what is the strategy for the German users to find the .de version of the site? I'm guessing AdWords or similar where you display the .de domain to increase the CTR. However, it would be nice to be able to bring users in via the organic rankings.
Seeing as this is a valid problem faced by many, it is a shame the engines haven't yet provided a better way to handle it.
Viel Glück!

Change SEO focus from homepage to other page on the domain
Hi, we are (were) ranking top 5 with gietvloer-wand.nl by focussing the homepage for a certain keyword. We're trying to change to focus from the homepage to /gietvloeren with more content / information. How to go about this? how to tell Google that /gietvloeren is more relevant / important then than the homepage? Or any experiences how long it will take for Google to see that the page has more information than the homepage? It's a test and any experiences you can share would be great. Thanks!

Canonical rel
I am having a few issues understanding the whole report card and canonical issue. I have a wordpress blog www.theseolab.com.au. When i created the blog i had setup http://theseolab.com.au and i thought that was my mistake. When i ran the on page report for www.theseolab.com.au . It said that my canonical was http://theseolab.com. So i changed it and my canonical points to http://www.theseolab.com.au. 5 days later i run the on page again and it still says that there are issues and it still shows that my website canonical is not pointing to the right link. Does it take time to update or am i missing something?

Domain and subdomain comparison - a deeper look into the subdomain metrics
Hi all, As I'm doing an analysis on our site and our main competitor (both sites are quite big, with active forums), who is much larger than we are, I have found out that : Our site has the strongest domain authority: 34, competitor: 33. Competitor beats us on 6 out of 8 areas in the sub categories for the "domain authority" category We beat our competitor in 8 out of 8 sub categories for the category "sub domain metrics" Now, as the title for this question suggests, I would like to hear what your thoughts is on this. Remember that our competitor is way bigger than us - how can they do so bad on the sub domain metrics, compared to us (and everybody else, I guess)? What are your thoughts on this? Please be aware that the domain shown to the left in the screen shot is our competitor. Thanks a lot - all comments are very much appreciated! yUbrX.png

Domain.com and www.domain.com
I recently changed the settings in Google Webmaster Tools so that domain.com and www.domain.com are the same. Several quick questions. About how long will it take for Google to list www.domain.com and stop listing domain.com? The .htaccess file uses a 301 to redirect all domain.com paths.to www.domain.com paths. Now that Google has been informed these two are the same, are the 301 rules to add www necessary? The default page is index.php. so domain.com gets 301 to www.domain.com gets 301 to www.domain.com/index.php. Is this the correct way to do things? Are there SEO consultants who will help on small projects such assist on issues like this? Best,

Purchased domain
We purchased the existing domain www.LancasterPA.com two years ago to promote local businesses. While individual pages within the site are ranking well, we can't get the home page to rank at all in Google. Would there be anything in the history of the domain that could be standing in the way? Or, what else could we check? Our other regional websites are ranking really well. Thanks.
