Does it pay to change link text internally?
-
Most of my internal pages have their best links from within our site (of course we are trying to change that). Is it worth the effort to sculpt the link text to show varied text instead of most all showing the same link text? Or is that only important from external links?
-
Ah. Sculpting in the sense that I'm familiar with is more so a function purely of PR strength. I think as long as you're not pushing the boundaries of contextual relevance and spam you'll be fine interlinking related silos. In the example I provided above, if they suddenly linked to a newly created page on their website about creating an online casino account it would probably be discounted and problematic. Same thing if they linked to an trusted neighborhood externally.
Here's an excellent recap of linking in general: http://www.seomoz.org/blog/10-illustrations-on-search-engines-valuation-of-links
and a highlight of linking to bad neighborhoods: http://www.seomoz.org/blog/more-on-nofollow-at-seomoz-and-how-bad-outbounds-can-impact-websites
If you're internal links are all fairly similar semantically you won't be an outlier.

Site is now 600-700 pages. Any indexing problems were caused by bad coding, so no.
As for sculpting, i was talking about keeping the do follow links down the same topical silo for ranking purposes for similar key words, not indexing. Does that change your answer?
-
It's a bit of an apples and oranges comparison. Sculpting is applicable for large scale sites that are having difficulty keeping pages indexed. If that's a problem you're facing you may have to do away with some contextual links in favor of passing as much link juice as possible through the entire network of your site.
On sites not facing indexation problems, contextual linking is another asset towards the enhancement of internal pages.
-
Now I'm confused. doesn't the do follow contextual links mess up the sculpting of the silo effect of only linking below you with do follow links, or does that not matter anymore?
-
Variable link text applies to your internal website pages whether from your own site or externally; however, you'll be best served by giving your most competitive terms and most important pages one relevant link from your home page. On internal pages you can link to those same pages with less competitive and semantically related keywords, but avoid overly linking to one page multiple times per page. It's also useful for the links to be in context of the rest of your site. Halogen Software does a good job of this (http://www.halogensoftware.com/) Note how in their left-hand navigation they use a contextual link and then use a nofolllow for the "Find out more..." link to the same page.
I can't really speak to the worth applied in this effort. That depends on your own ROI. But a carefully crafted site will pay long term dividends down the road, even more so as it gains external links with similar keywords.

Should I remove links from my internal blog?
I have blogs/news sites on every one of my clients' websites (each representing a different business within the same industry - self storage). On each of these blog sites, I have a writer who places about 3-5 exact keyword match links (varying anchor text) to give interlink juice to the other off-site businesses owned by the client. Each of these blogs receive about five posts per week. I am sure this is mega-over-optimizing and a stupid thing to do considering penguin. So, my questions are: Moving forward - 1. Should i stop adding so many blog articles to each site? 2. How many interlinking anchor texts should I use per blog? 3. Should I go back and either get rid of all those interlinks on past blogs or just trash the blog articles altogether? Please help if you can - I very much appreciate the responses best bd

Link Targets
What do you think of getting links from... high quality sites, with many non spammy high trusted links to them....but their traffic has been majorly hit by panda. I suspect perhaps for having too many thin pages. Is persuing links on these sites a good idea or not? I'd welcome opinions.

Panda Update: Isn't a link still a link?
I was doing some link building and some SEO's said that the Panda update affected many websites. I am going to use eZineArticles.com as my example. EzineArticles was affected by the Panda update and does not show up in the SERPs as much as before. But they still have doFollow Links coming from the articles I am submitting. QUESTION: Regardless if EzineArticles was affected by the Panda Update, isn't a "Follow Link" still a "Follow Link" OR am I completely wasting my time on this devalued website? Edit: Yes I know a PR 0 page is not as valuable as a PR 9 page. I am asking from the standpoint of the affected Panda Update domains overall.

New links for Internal Anchor Text
If pages get moved and 301s are in place is it still important to update the anchor text links to the new page url? For example would it be optimal to go through old blog posts and change the urls for the anchor text if the old anchor text url redirects to the new page url.

Changing Category Names in Wordpress Blog & Inbound Links
I'm working on a wordpress blog, /www.athleticfoodie.com, and I'd like to change the names of the categories so that I include keywords. If I change the current category name of "Healthy Recipes" to "Recipes for Athletes" will I lose the inbound links associated with the category and/or posts? Is there a way to prevent this?
