Hey SEOMoz
I have been spending a bit of time in the Q&A of late and have noticed lots of questions never get answered. I also had a question of my own that I left open for ages and I figured it maybe a good idea to add some kind of email nag or on screen notification for people to close old questions.
There are some that have had plenty of answers but that either never get closed & really, it takes away from the fun of participating if things are never closed off & searching shows the same old tired, answerd but not closed questions lingering around like a bad smell.
Not really a question, but a little tweak suggestion.
Cheers

Thanks for all of the suggestions everyone! We're aware that there are old questions that tend to linger, and we're working on some solutions.
Dunamis, why wouldn't an email work for you? I had thought an email might be one of the more effective ways of letting people know there had been answers to their questions, so I'd like to hear why it wouldn't work for some people.
Some of the people who asked questions were in a trial membership, and are now basic members, so they can't mark something as answered. I am either marking those as answered, or a discussion question. I'm also leaving notes on questions asking people if this has answered their question, but not everyone is subscribed to their own questions by email, especially on the older questions. When Q&A first launched, it wasn't as active, so my hypothesis is that people didn't get a response right away and didn't sign up for email notifications, then just stopped checking for answers.

It also would be nice to see a categorization feature by answer. For example, I recently answered a question regarding 301 redirection and www vs non-www (http://www.seomoz.org/q/hostname-report-in-google-analytics) where the bulk of my answer was pulled from the SEOmoz "learn-seo" section. That quoted answer could suffice for multiple questions so if someone has a nuanced situation they could scan through a block of questions that all have one answer and likely find what they need, sort of like a FAQ with links to all the questions that fall under that one answer. Or perhaps a wiki format with links to all the questions that it answers.

Yep, I agree, I think we need the following - email nag - on screen nag - auto close thirty days after last response That should do it I reckon.
-
Maybe auto close the question after 30 days? The community is pretty active and if it isn't answered within 30 days it's probably not going to get answered (or marked as answered)?
-
Hey, yeah, I think that's a good idea but maybe a combination of emails with links to the posts, on screen nags, points & auto closures on real old questions would help keep it tidy.
-
An email probably wouldn't work for me. But, perhaps an extra Moz point for marking your question as answered would help?

Question About creating seperate websites or using a subdomain or just subfolders...Thanks!
I am working with a company who has created a reservation software...We have been advertising this software aggressively and have been doing well with companies coming on board...Let's call the company ABC and the url was ABC.com...Now they are launching a customer facing side of things that will have all the clients listed for consumers to book at their location...So an online marketplace...Like VRBO or AirBnB...They are taking the name of the software company and making it the url for the marketplace site...So now the marketplace is ABC.com and we need to figure out if we go with a new site for the software side or if we use subdomains or a subfolder.... Do we go with ABCSoftware.com - New root domain ABC.software.com - Subdomain ABC.com/software - Subfolder There are a few other intricacies with this...Not all the companies that use the software will be on the marketplace side...And people who book through the company but using the software have a url embedded on their site that books there directly...This booking costs the company less than a booking that comes through the marketplace so this needs to be kept separate... Thanks for the help everyone!

1500 Domains... Where to begin? & Web Structure Question.
So, as the title says, I am stuck. I recently have been brought on as the SEO guru for a small-mid size company with the task of rebuilding their web presence. Their website is in pretty unfortunate condition. The more research I do, the farther and farther I am going down the rabbit hole of chaos. Essential the previous CEO was doing all SEO work. He purchased 1500 domains, all keyword specific. Installed wordpress on roughly 1,000 and then began pumping out content. Of the 1,000 roughly 300 of them have about 600-2,000 characters worth of content that is absolute fluff. From there the linking began. Now the content is different enough that Google doesn't seem to notice that its the SAME FREEKIN THING on each domain, but I am very concerned. The company has their main multi-page domain which has other links and sources of traffic, but in essence the previous owner created a micro link web. My advice is to cut those links ASAP and remove the previous work. At the same time, I also don't want them to lose rank. So I guess I am asking a whole slew of questions... Am I right in thinking that we have to build a bridge before we burn a bridge? Is it worth fixing up some of those other domains to have original content to try and bolster what we already have? Would it be better to combine everything into one website, or try and have different domains represent different things. For example Envato.com is an umbrella website with 8 separate websites operating under the same roof using different domains.? Where do I begin? I feel like I have started this project numerous times. I know the keywords, I know where the duplicate content is, I know the structure of the main domain, I am getting the structure of the entire link web. Lastly, any thoughts you all have would be greatly appreciated. I realistically have minimal experience in this realm. I am a a major nub. I understand SEO in theory, sorta. So I'm getting there!

OK Crawl Test Link Question Again!
I've downloaded a crawl test and column G Link Count reads 62 and yep there are a total of 62 links on the page in question. Column AM Internal Links reads 303 and yep there are somewhere in the order of 303 pages pointing at this one. Root Domains is surprisingly low at 6, so maybe there are only 6 domains linking to this page. BUT... External Links read 51. There are not 51 links pointing away from this domain on this page, no way hozay, so can anybody tell me what is meant by 'External Links? A humble thank you in anticipation of an education. Jem

About private questions
Seems my last private question was on March 23 -- so why would I have to wait until June to ask another? I believe I made a reply right at the first of April, which wasn't answered... and I haven't asked another private question yet... not that I have one now, just wonder why the wait that seems longer than a "calendar month"? _Cindy

SEOmoz crawl error questions
I just got my first seomoz crawl report and was shocked at all the errors it generated. I looked into it and saw 7200 crawl errors. Most of them are duplicate page titles and duplicate page content. I clicked into the report and found that 97% of the errors were going off of one page It has ttp://legendzelda.net/forums/index.php/members/page__sort_key__joined__sort_order__asc__max_results__20 http://legendzelda.net/forums/index.php/members/page__sort_key__joined__sort_order__asc__max_results__20__quickjump__A__name_box__begins__name__A__quickjump__E etc Has 20 pages of slight variations of this link. It is all my members list or a search of my members list so it is not really duplicate content or anything. How can I get these errors to go away and make search my site is not taking a hit? The forum software I use is IPB.

Question about when new crawls start
Hi everyone, I'm currently using the trial of seomoz and I absolutely love what I'm seeing. However, I have 2 different websites (one has over 10,000 pages and one has about 40 pages). I've noticed that the smaller website is crawled every few days. However, the larger site hasn't been crawled in a few days. Although both campaigns state that the sites won't be crawled until next Monday, is there any way to get the crawl to start sooner on the large site? The reason that I've asked is that I've implemented some changes that will likely decrease the amount of pages that are crawled simply based upon the recommendations on this site. So, I'm excited to see the potential changes. Thanks, Brian
