Keywords Ranking Secret?
-
When I searched "long dresses" in Google.com, and found the following page is ranked on top 10
http://www.shopstyle.com/browse?fts=long+summer+dresses
But there is no back link pointing to this page, so why does this company manage to rank high for such a competitive keyword without link building? Any opinions?

Ah I'm afraid I haven't read the whole thing. I have this tendency to only ever read two thirds of any book before starting on the next one... I have a shelf full on partially read books with only a couple completely read. I tell myself that one day I will finish them all but I'm curious to see if that will ever happen.
To Rand and the others credit, the Art of SEO is one of the only ones I've read all of. I wonder if there's any relation in terms of where he got the title?

I really enjoy reading his book. I have it on my phone and read a chapter whenever I have a few minutes. I've read it several times and see so many applications of it to SEO and business competition.

Very few pages rank well for competitive keywords using "secrets".
Sun Tzu, a military philosopher from about 500 BC said... "It is possible to know how to conquer without being able to do it."
The same is true on the web today. It comes down to a "battle of resources" applied over basic smarts.

Firstly, this page has a PR 2 which clearly explains that this page has backlinks. It only depends upon the tool you are using to view it. Secondly, if you go to the home page and then search "long dresses", you will get the same page which means that this page exists and is in the index of the search engine

If you run the seomoz term target tool on the page it scores very well across the board.
Looking at the title, meta description and page content it appears to be a well optimized page for the term. For it to have no links to it at all would suggest it is a newish page, so it might drop a few pages over the next few days - it's not uncommon for a new, well written page to rank well for a week or so and then drop a little.

Hi. One of our competitors is ranking ahead of us on Google. Our site has a much stronger authority and much more quality links than this competitor. Would anyone have any explanations for this? Thanks
Hi Guys - I've noticed recently that one of our competitors is ranking extremely well on Google, while we seem to be fluctuating, along with other competitors, for our main keywords. Our site has a much stronger authority and much more quality links than this competitor and traffic is continuously increasing each month. Would anyone have any explanations as to why we may be seeing this? Any help would be greatly appreciated, thanks.

Homepage outranking subpage for main keyword, but subpage is more optimized for the keyword.
Recently did a site redesign, 95% of the site and keywords are matching up in terms of keyword to what page is ranking for that keyword. All and all was expected and pleased with the redesign, except... A subpage ( PA 1 ) really is a landing page for the main keyword in question is only one jump from the hompage, is it's own category and has the exact match anchor text to its page from the homepage, has a total of 14 total keyword usages. The homepage has a PA of 28, mentioned the keyword once in the body text in form of anchor link, yet still steals the thunder from the main keyword. There aren't a ton of backlinks, but ones we do have 95% of them goto the homepage. Subpage in question has a on page grade of A for the keyword, while the homepage has an on page grade of C. No backlinks at all for this page yet. Subpage even uses the keyword as it's url name, so kinda at a loss to what else I can do, it's a new page, so alll I keep thinking is the issue is the page authority, it's linked to from other pages on the site. Any suggestions?

Huge Drop in Rankings
I just (this week) experienced a huge drop in rankings for one of the keywords that I was sitting in second spot on Google US. 'What Should I Read Next' I dropped to 82, but none of my other keywords suffered a similar drop. Any ideas? Webmasters offers no clues as of yet either. I was doing link building through blogs and some article sites, but it was all white hat as far as I know.

How to rank for many keywords
OK, so I've been diving into SEO pretty hard lately and learning everything I can. Something I'm not quite understanding is how to rank for a lot of different keywords. We're in the proofreading and editing space which can be broken down into many categories: general proofreading & editing essay editing book editing etc. If I consider the "essay editing" category, the main keyword I want to target is, in fact, "essay editing". However, I'd also want to target: essay editing service, edit my essay, fix my essay, revise my essay, etc. Basically, a lot of modifiers. I can easily target our main page for essay editing and essay editing service keywords, but how do I start ranking for those longer tail keywords? Is it simply building content that includes them? Is it getting links utilizing anchor text? Or is there something I'm missing? I don't see the point in building separate service pages for those other keywords; I think that's a waste and bad site architecture practices. I'm just looking for my "aha" moment on these longer-tail rankings. Thanks!

SEOmoz's ranking of links on competitor question..
I am Perplexed about SEOmoz crawl for new links on a competitors website. When I looked at a company who received very high ranks for the links...on SEOMoz...such as. 95, 96, 97 etc..... I couldn't figure out how they ranked so high. One company bought 20 links for a couple hundred dollars and all of them were ranked very high on SEOmoz but when I used the page rank tool on them individually they were either "0" or "1" and none were over a 2. I was debating submitting for those since I am just starting out and wanted to get our name listed in the internet world. Are the high rankings by SEOmoz related to something else? Would I be better off buying a listing in some of the premium directories instead. Like Yahoo or BBB or Manta. ( After I get my site optimized first) Thank you, Greg

Do you think 3-way link exchanges help in keyword rank and overall PR authority?
I know traditional link exchanges aren't very valuable and Google doesn't respect them as much, but what about 3-way link exchanges?
