I just discovered something about Addthis shares, Twitter, and rel-canonical.
-
Let's say I have a page on my site with the url www.mydomain.com/page1.php?id=234.
Let's say it can be accessed by the url www.mydomain.com/page-this-is-a-keyword-rich-url
And let's say that the second example is what I have set as my rel-canonical.
I wondered what would happen when people submitted the non-canonical url to twitter. We know that Twitter shares count for something in SEO. I didn't want things to go to waste if people were landing on my short urls and sharing them on Twitter.
Well, tonight, I shared one of my own urls on Twitter. I was accidentally on the short one (not the canonical), but when I shared it via addthis the long one was shared. So, Addthis must read the canonical and use this to share.
Very cool. At least to me. I may possibly be the only person on the planet that understands what I just wrote, but this is a neat discovery for me.

I am still using it on all of my sites... getting hundreds of actions per day. Works great - but I have very few canonical problems.
-
Complicated. Does everyone still recommend addthis for social sharing?

I'm seeing that this week on both the Twitter and FB share icons (the official, JavaScript-based ones). They seem to be picking up the canonical tag and sharing the canonical version. It doesn't matter whether the tag has been added recently or has been in place for a while, as far as I can tell.
Honestly, it's strange for my implementation. I'm trying to canonicalize updates on a 30-day challenge to the original post, so the posts aren't really duplicates (I just want to consolidate them for SEO and search usability). So, if someone RTs or Shares those pages they won't be sharing the page they actually read. That seems a bit odd to me, usability-wise.
-
I have also seen AddThis starting to drop page parameters down to the base url.
-
Interesting, Dr Pete has seen similar things happening when using the official twitter retweet button as well. I'm hoping he'll chime in here as well.
-
Ha! I understood, that makes 2 people on the planet. Good share!

Facebook Share Percentage - On Blog Posts
Hi everyone, I'm trying to find a way to give each post we are creating a quality status. Since bounce rate on this case isn't really a viable option (Blog Behavior) since people could stay 10 mins reading it and then go elsewhere without interacting. I'm looking for a way to focus on facebook sharing, lets say something simple like "Facebook Shares / Sessions" per each blog post, while I can have an idea on my own data, lets say my highest is 4.1% of all people that go to that post end it up sharing it. But I wonder on average what would you consider a good engagement post, what would that percentage might be? Thanks in advance.

Tool to get all the Social Shares for a Domain
Does anyone know of a tool that can get you the total, or close to it, social shares an entire domain has received? I know of... http://www.sharedcount.com/ - but this only gets shares for the entered URL not the entire domain. http://www.pagesort.com/ - this seems to dig a little deeper but not deep enough. I know opensite explorer gets some data as well but still seems very limited.

Rel=publisher
I've had the rel=publisher set up correctly for months now and verified it using the Google rich snippet tool. For some reason when I search my site/brand the Google+ profile will not show? Does anyone have any suggestions as to what I can do to have it show up? Thanks!

Building links to a Twitter/social account
I've seen plenty of articles about using Twitter to build links, but how about building links to a Twitter account? Does registering on sites and directories like Topsy, Twellow and Klout help? We can link to Twitter accounts on our own websites and other social profiles, and use it as our link on blog comments etc, but is there anywhere else specific?

URL's for videos to increase page value and social sharing value
Hello Everyone, We recently developed videos for all of our products. Upon clicking on each video, we have the video popping up in a lightbox. The videos are hosted on Amazon s3. We would like to implement social sharing for each video and to do so, we are going to have the video load on each page upon being clicked using jquery. My question is how we should structure the urls so that the actual product page gets the share value. So for example, if the page is www.website.com/product1.aspx should we have the video be www.website.com/product1.aspx#video and ensure there is a canonical url on each product page so that the benefit is given to www.website.com/product1.aspx Or is there another way that anyone would recommend doing this? The videos are AMAZING and I'd like to ensure that as these videos are shared on social networks, that the value of the share is directed to the actual product page. Any ideas mozzers? Thanks!

Twitter profile: Personal photo vs brand graphic image
We are promoting our company on twitter, and currently using a high quality brand graphic image. We see others who use the personal photo of "evangalist" who manages the twitter account. Any advice on what works best here to encourage user engagement? A more generic "brand" identity graphic versus a real person's photo? Of course this is in conjunction with doing all of the other good Twitter things, but curious what folks recommend on the profile image.

Is there a way on OSE or any other site to find the 50 most socially shared URLs on a given domain?
I'd love to see which URLs on a specific domain get socially shared the most. I know I can use OSE to say figure out exactly how much social sharing has happened on let's say this URL:
Social Media | | Almonds
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Barack_Obama But what if I want to figure out the top 50 most shared URLs across all of wikipedia.org. Is that possible on OSE or anywhere else? If not, do you have some ideas on how something similar could be achieved?0 -
Does the value of Twitter/FB shares change depending on the url used?
I have a really hard time wrapping my head around the use rel canonical. I just watched WBF and it brought up a question that I had. I had a situation where some of my pages could be accessed a couple of ways: www.mydomain/question1.php?id=24-keyword-rich-url, or www.mydomain/question1.php?id=24 I used rel canonical to tell the search engines that the keyword rich url was the one to index. Now, we all know that shares on Twitter, FB, etc. can add value to my site's SEO. So, if someone happens to be on the non-keyword-rich url and they click a button to share, do I still get the same seo benefit? Which brings me to a related question...if someone shares your content via a bitly or other shortened domain, is there any difference to the benefit you would get as compared to them sharing the full domain name?
