What are some of your best tips, strategies or resources for link building?
-
I currently work for a contract manufacturing company so when I think about building links it seems as if it's going to be a daunting task. Mainly because any kind of content that you can come up with is rather dry. When I go about searching for links I usually run into a lot of directories that charge anywhere between $25-$50 for a listing.
I've had a hard time convincing marketing that we should start a blog which may be a good way to build some links if we come up with quality posts but those posts may be few and far inbetween.
Does anybody have any recommendations for building links for this type of company or subject matter?
Also, and I'm sure we have all heard this. When I mentioned the fact that we should be building some quality links to the site marketing first asked why and then commented "Well that shouldn't take you too long". Why is it so difficult to get management to accept the fact that managing a website is an ongoing and constantly changing process that involves research and experimentation?

Gyi Tsakalakis
I actually went to management with three sites that ranked on page one of Google for our most important keyword and asked them to verify that the companies were our competition. Management countered me by printing out some pages from a competitor that they knew of but ranked no where near the top of Google. So I think they kind of missed the point of what I was trying to prove. So I've had some difficulty even getting off the ground.

That's a lot easier to make a connection than say a travel website... What, you don't want your hotel to associated with roaches?

They don't understand that top rankings in money SERPs are usually deliberately done and highly competitive. It's just like war!

+1 for competitive analysis. Show your client what their competitors are doing and what impact their efforts are having. In my experience, even if they don't quite "get it", they will be forced to acknowledge that their competitors are, and that can be enough to drive them to understand this. Especially when you can show changes over time.

You've got stuff on the blog about humanely dealing with pests, and about how pest control is better than exterminators... along with saying annihilation of the pests isn't what you want, so maybe...

Letting like minded link friendly people know that you have a site you'd like links for. Honestly, be direct and ask. I am pretty sure I could find you a link if I knew what site you wanted it to and as long as it's not a bad neighborhood.
This may not be the best place to try it but let's see... Can anyone here find a me a link for www.BlogPestControl.com?
Well if it doesn't work here try Twitter. Twitter is a great link building tool.... not Tweets but DMs. Feel free to DM me your website.

That PowerPoint presentation sounds like a good idea.
If you can include data about your competitors.... about how they have a ton of links, busy blogs, tons of content. etc. They have been investing in this stuff for at least ten years and you are playing catch-up.
Also let them know about SEOMoz and other training that you can attend. They are asking you to go out and fight the heavyweights in your SEO niche. Would they ask you to go into the ring with the boxing heavyweight champion without a lot of training, investment and preparation. They wouldn't. This isn't any different.
At the places I have worked I would have to be careful about getting the boss into a training session like this. It has to start out punching with vital information and stay that way to the end or he would get itchy. I think that it would be better to shoot for a short presentation that would put seeds in his mind and make him ask for more rather than try to get him for two hours. Just sayin' how things were were I used to work - your boss might be different.

Thanks for your response. I have been spending some of my own time gathering some data on our current rankings for some our most important keywords. I'm happy to say that some time that I've spent recently on some on page optimization have increased our rankings for some keyterms. But now it's time to push the site to page one of Google instead of page 2-3-4 or 5.
You hit the nail on the head regarding my current situation. A very small amount of my time is spent managing the website but I feel as if it should be a full time position. Instead of letting it sit and HOPE that people will visit and contact us, we need to spend more time climbing the ranking and then experimenting with landing pages to get visitors to convert.
Perhaps a power point presentation with graphs, historical rankings and suggestions and what to do moving forward is in order?

I think that a lot of people in your position have the additional job of educating other key people in the company about how search engines work. Without that they will think that all you have to do is tweak the pages and the rankings will rise. But, as you know, SEO is a "battle of resources" and those resources can include: content, links, social presence, education, allies, time and more. Since those resources all cost money then you have to educate them to get the allocation. If you don't do that then they will think that you are a failure at tweaking and hire someone else. So, this education is of jugular importance to your status at the company and your recommendations when you leave.

Link building - where to start?
Okay - we have around 200 natural links pointing to our domain, some good, some not so good; today I've spent some time removing any bad, spammy links pointing to our business domain and we're just about there. Now I'd like to start a link building strategy. To be fair, I've assumed for the past year or so that link building is dead, unless you can get natural, really good links - which in the mobility and elderly products industry can be quite difficult. I have recently created a blog on our website - could RSS feeds be a benefit too?

Link Building Question
Hi Community, I am currently doing some link building for a client. I have created a case study in the form of an article based around the client on our own website & linked to one of their service subpages so a user can see what kind of work they do. I am also currently trying to rank the exact same service sub page for 'KEYWORD A'. I have used 'KEYWORD A' in the title of the article (/KEYWORD-A-TEXT-TEXT) and built a link (not exact match anchor text but contains 'KEYWORD A') within the article pointing to the service subpage. Our blog post now out-ranks the service subpage by around 5 pages, my question is: 1. How long does Google take to acknowledge that the client's service subpage is more resourceful for KEYWORD A? Any other hints / tips / advice is appreciated! Thank you

What is the best white hat seo link building strategy?
My goal is to build links that comply with Google's Quality Guidelines. I am wondering what is the best way to approach webmasters or bloggers about submitting guest posts or writing content. I have done a competitive analysis, and have a list of potential link sources, but I am not sure what approach to take next. Any advice or strategy would be appreciated.

Link & Content Building
this is a tough one for me. Some of you know that the average SEO contract is fairly limited in budget.Clients in very competitive industries are fearing spending a lot on SEO. I do not think I should list the reasons for this.what do you do with limited budgets for SEO.The onsite-technical optimization is fairly easy and take much prsonal labor but it is manageable. The off-site optimization, links, content , and just getting you client out there is time and funds consuming over the scope of regular projects I know.My question is what do you do with onsite optimization really. I am sure some advice will include write great content, get it out there, guest blogging however those are not readily available and are not fitting the scope of any project.what do you think?

Link Building for lower budgets that work on 2012
Hello, I think many of us have re-plan their SEO strategy since the latest updates from Google and we all saw that coming anyway. We already know that link building using Directories, Article sites, Link exchange, profiles, footer/side links, paid links, press releases and other have been devalued or not working at all. For low budget websites and websites that cannot afford fresh/valued updated content or other link baiting techniques there arent much left. I my self found that Social Media and Blogging (Guest posts) are they only techniques left for websites that cannot manage to get natural links. Also i have realized that On-page optimization is getting more attention again. We all have great ideas of acquiring links but what we do when time and budget is limited? Google promotes natural link building but how you supposed to get natural links from a new low reputation website? I kinda of like the new approach since it will make SEO work a lot of harder and eliminate the easy path success. It will also focus the SEO job more on On-page and on great content. But this is getting a lot of harder for new websites with lower budgets and lower time to consume on SEO. I deeply know the answer of my question but i would like your opinion also and of course if anyone would like to share some ideas or know-how to discuss is welcome.

Hi All, We have some partners which link to our site, and they put "?ref=SITENAME" so we Can identify the source of the link....but does this matter to the search engines? Does this count as a different page than the one without the query string? -Rasmus

To hire a link building company.... or not?
I am doing a lot of the niche partnership link building but I am looking for a company to compliment some of my work in other related areas. Need some advice from the group. A couple of questions: 1. I'm looking for a company to acquire around 20-30 links per month. Not talking about easy directories or social links, but good (PR 3+) sites that are somewhat related to my business. Is that a reasonable request? 2. What should I expect to pay for this each month? 3. Any good suggestions on companies in the US. I am a small startup with a fairly limited budget, at least for now? Thanks everyone!

Our link building strategy - affiliates and trophies
Hey guys, I just wanted to follow up on Rand's excellent whiteboard Friday: http://www.seomoz.org/blog/preventing-linkbased-penalties-whiteboard-friday It got me worried I think, but I'm not sure. We have a site where we are building up links in 2 ways: We have an affiliate set-up. A search widget in an i-frame, and below the i-frame a followed link pointing to the relevant page.
Link Building | | sichristie
The anchor text varies for each affiliate depending which region the affiliate comes from. We have awarded about 500 of our partners with trophies - i.e. - this partner has best reviews or most sales etc. Our partners are absolutely loving it.
The trophy is an image link which they can embed on their website, with alt text only mentioning our brand - that was an oversight ( I think). I wish the alt had been dynamically generated for each partner.
The trophies link to our partner pages.
So we are getting many links to our deeper pages, which is great.
The links I believe are relevant as they are coming from our partners websites and pointing to their relevant partner page on our website. So burning question is. Would you consider these links dodgy given Rands recent whiteboard friday post, and the recent farmer algorithm change? Many thanks, Croozie0
