Drastic keyword position drop from time to time
-
Hey guys,
I'm having the following issue. My keyword position in SERP is usually 10-11 but sometimes (like once a month or so) it drops to like to position 46 or something of that kind. Why would that be happening and what can I do to avoid that stuff?
-
As a matter of fact, we've been ranking for the keyword for a few years. So, it can't be an issue. Thanks anyway.
-
Thanks for the help. Well, I am checking my keyword positions in SEO Administrator. So, it cannot be a personalized search. And thanks for the input why Google might be doing it!
-
Do you have the dates of the drops? Panda would kill a clients SEO for about 2 weeks and then they have rebounded. This has happened for the last 3 rollouts.
If not, then it is something else. are you making any changes before the drops
-
Are these keywords that you have started ranking for recently? I have been having this kind of fluctuations with new keywords, too
-
I've had some keywords that do a flip flop like that just before they take a big jump up a few positions. My thought is that Google is testing how the SERPS would do without your site present and see if there is another site that would get more clicks. Somehow it takes that information and determines that your site actually is valuable and then they promote it.
On the other hand, are you absolutely sure this is not a personalized search issue? When the keyword drops, does your traffic drop as well? (That might be hard to judge as there is not a whole lot of difference between positions that are not on the first page). It would be interesting to see if the keyword appears lower when you are not logged in to Google. You may already know this, but to test if the search is personalized, add &pws=0 to the url and hit enter and then see if you are still in your higher position.

It's called fluctuation and there isn't much you can do about it to be honest, just keep building good links and hopefully it should stabilise. You should try Social Bookmarking as that can work wonders.

Impressions skyrocketed 10x in few days on just one keyword and I don't understand why.
Hi everyone, I found this 'anomaly' in my google search console data. As you can see from the picture the impressions skyrocketed in a few days and then sort-of plateaued. The clicks remained almost the same because the keyword is highly informational (Wikipedia takes all the traffic). The keyword has around 650 000 searches per month. Btw. We are not doing off-site SEO. I would like to hear your opinion on what could have caused this. A Google update maybe? 5lERKef

Sudden drop in traffic since website redesign – can't spot double firing sessions pre-update
Hi all, We launched an updated website around mid-April and have seen a long-term drop in unique page views and sessions since then. Between 25-35%. Page views returned to normal within a month, however. In terms of acquisition, we've not lost referrals or direct traffic, just organic sessions. I haven't seen any significant Google updates except for 'Fred' but that was in March (pre-website update). We did have to do some 301s and fix up an HTML and XML sitemap, etc, post launch – but that's been in place for a while now so shouldn't still have such an effect? We are also struggling with load speed at the moment, working on this at the moment. Didn't think this had a such a significant impact on ranking however. We've lost mostly non-UK traffic, especially USA. We're actually climbing rankings for a lot of new keywords I'm targeting, so I can't see how our SEO has been hampered. Frustratingly, I wasn't using Search Console or Moz Pro before this update, so can't compare much in the way of keyword traffic (I know I feel very silly now). I don't know if it's a reporting issue (I wish it was). I mean we had both GTM and GA tags on the website (I didn't know this until I looked into it) but these were present post website-launch. And I haven't found enough double firing sessions or page views to suggest we used to be getting double figures anyway. Before this, we were ranking brilliantly and getting more organic traffic than ever. All the best,

We just witnessed a domain authority drop. We went from 24 to 21.Not sure why. We've been creating fresh new content for our site over the last few days and haven't done anything that would cause it.

Organic Traffic Drop and Rank Increase After Video Thumbnail added
So my company has created a large amount of videos and I took a couple of them and created a test video sitemap to see what effect adding a video thumbnail/rich snippet to the SERPs would be. It worked on one page and gained 2 spots (position 6 to 4) for the highest keyword, but traffic didn't increase too much. Then a week later I tested it with the page that we get the most organic traffic for, which is ranking for a very big keyword. It worked and gained a bit of ranking, but traffic decreased 50% ever since according to Google Analytics. It seems to me that the traffic from users clicking on the video thumbnail is not be tracked as google / organic even though it lands them on the intended page/doesn't redirect anywhere else. I've looked to see if traffic to this page increased overall to see if it was being tracked via a referral or as something else, but couldn't find any traffic discrepancy. The only thing I did find is that impressions under SEO > Landing Pages > Video Property increased, but this could be from the page ranking in the Video SERPs now. Has anyone experienced a similar situation? Do you think having a video snippet could be that big of a turn off for customers that people just aren't clicking like they used to? I don't think so, that's why I'm leaning towards a tracking discrepancy in Google Analytics.

Where does the organic keyword information come from in Google Analytics?
I know that Google switch to all encrypted search, but I still show some keywords. Are those keywords that slipped through? Or are they all from Yahoo/Bing?

Does Google encryption of keyword data impact SEO revenue reporting in Google analytics?
Hi there, I know Google has been encrypting SEO keyword data which they rolled out in September 2013. My question is - will this impact SEO revenue figures reported in Google analytics? I have been monitoring SEO revenue figures for a client and they are significantly down even though rankings have not lowered. Is this because of Google's encryption? Could there be another reason? Many thanks!
