How can I get unimportant pages out of Google?
-
Hi Guys,
I have a (newbie) question, untill recently I didn't had my robot.txt written properly so Google indexed around 1900 pages of my site, but only 380 pages are real pages, the rest are all /tag/ or /comment/ pages from my blog. I now have setup the sitemap and the robot.txt properly but how can I get the other pages out of Google? Is there a trick or will it just take a little time for Google to take out the pages?
Thanks!
Ramon

If you want to remove an entire directory, you can exclude that directory in robots.txt, then go to Google Webmaster Tools and request a URL removal. You'll have an option to remove an entire directory there.

No, sorry. What I said is, if you mark the folder as disalow in robots.txt, it will not remove the pages are already indexed.
But the meta tag, when the spiders go again on the page and see that the pages are with the noindex tag will remove it.
Since you can not already include the directory on the robots.txt. Before removing the SE pages.
First you put the noindex tag on all pages you want to remove. After they are removed, it takes a week for a month. After you add the folders in robots.txt to your site who do not want to index.
After that, you dont need to worry about the tags.
I say this because when you add in the robots.txt first, the SE does not read the page anymore, so they would not read the meta noindex tag. Therefore you must first remove the pages with noindex tag and then add in robot.txt
Hope this has helped.

Thanks Vargas, If I choose for noindex, I should remove it from the robot.txt right?
I understood that if you have a noindex tag on the page and as well a dissallow in the robot.txt the SE will index it, is that true?
-
For you remove the pages you want, need to put a tag:
<meta< span="">name="robots" content="noindex">If you want internal links and external relevance to pass on these pages, you put:
<meta< span="">name="robots" content="noindex, follow">If you do the lock on robot.txt: only need to include the tag in the current urls, new search engines will index no.
In my opinion, I do not like using the google url remover. Because if someday you want to index these folders, will not, at least it has happened to me.
The noindex tag works very well to remove objectionable content, within 1 month or so now will be removed.</meta<></meta<>

Yes. It's only a secondary level aid, and not guaranteed, yet it could help speed up the process of devaluing those pages in Google's internal system. If the system sees those, and cross-references to the robots.txt file it could help.

Thanks guys for your answers....
Alan, do you mean that I place the tag below at all the pages that I want out of Google? -
I agree with Alan's reply. Try canonical 1st. If you don't see any change, remove the URLs in GWT.
-
There's no bulk page request form so you'd need to submit every URL one at a time, and even then it's not a guaranteed way. You could consider gettting a canonical tag on those specific pages that provides a different URL from your blog, such as an appropriate category page, or the blog home page. That could help speed things up, but canonical tags themselves are only "hints" to Google.
Ultimately it's a time and patience thing.

It will take time, but you can help it along by using the url removal tool in Google Webmaster Tools. https://www.google.com/webmasters/tools/removals

Should you use google url remover if older indexed pages are still being kept?
Hello, A client recently did a redesign a few months ago, resulting in 700 pages being reduced to 60, mostly due to panda penalty and just low interest in products on those pages. Now google is still indexing a good number of them ( around 650 ) when we only have 70 on our sitemap. Thing is google indexes our site on average now for 115 urls when we only have 60 urls that need indexing and only 70 on our sitemap. I would of thought these urls would be crawled and not found, but is taking a very long period of time. Our rankings haven't recovered as much as we'd hope, and we believe that the indexed older pages are causes this. Would you agree and also would you think removing those old urls via the remover tool would be best option? It would mean using the url remover tool for 650 pages. Thank you in advance

A few pages deindexed from Google .. PLEASE HELP!
My client has a fairly new site and we were agressively building content to the website. It is an ecommerce store and we have got a blog as well. We guest blogged in a few places and wrote 3-5 articles a day. Last few days, i noticed 3-4 pages that we were building links to got deindexed. What could be the reason? We weren't using any bots to build links, only a couple of it around 5-10 links to a page. Google WMT is not showing any messages and no manual action is seen. What could be the reason? I've submitted those URL for reindex and so far nothing seems to work. Any idea? Please help.

Why would Google rank a highly irrelevant page in the top 15 especially for a seemingly important keyword?
While searching for "Blog writing service reviews", I found that a web page that's not even optimized for the query is ranking within top 15 search results. Upon checking the source code, I found that the webpage has been optimized for product reviews services. Plus, the website is only 11 months old, got 7 digit Alexa rank and has PR 1. Why would Google rank such a page in top 15?

Can Google show the hReview-Aggregate microformat in the SERPs on a product page if the reviews themselves are on a separate page?
Hi, We recently changed our eCommerce site structure a bit and separated our product reviews onto a a different page. There were a couple of reasons we did this : We used pagination on the product page which meant we got duplicate content warnings. We didn't want to show all the reviews on the product page because this was bad for UX (and diluted our keywords). We thought having a single page was better than paginated content, or at least safer for indexing. We found that Googlebot quite often got stuck in loops and we didn't want to bury the reviews way down in the site structure. We wanted to reduce our bounce rate a little, so having a different reviews page could help with this. In the process of doing this we tidied up our microformats a bit too. The product page used to have to three main microformats; hProduct hReview-Aggregate hReview The product page now only has hProduct and hReview-Aggregate (which is now nested inside the hProduct). This means the reviews page has hReview-Aggregate and hReviews for each review itself. We've taken care to make sure that we're specifying that it's a product review and the URL of that product. However, we've noticed over the past few weeks that Google has stopped feeding the reviews into the SERPs for product pages, and is instead only feeding them in for the reviews pages. Is there any way to separate the reviews out and get Google to use the Microformats for both pages? Would using microdata be a better way to implement this? Thanks,

Can a Joomla template ruin a sites on-page seo?
Have been looking into a potential clients site that performs really badly, when I took a look in 'googlebot view' I see that every on page link appears- [visit camp26.biz] clients link title as expected insures against a negative affect. But having that as the first two words of every link title/anchor in the eyes of Google would seem to be something to be concerned about? Have tried searching for answers to this online but template providers are so prevelant everywhere I can't find any decent information on this issue. If anyone can throw some light on this for me it will be much appreciated : )

Is creating backlinks to Google places pages worth the time and money involved?
I have worked on a website and organically it is starting to do fine. The website itself is on the right track. Now, the places page, could use a little improvement. I did make sure it has the right categories, has all unique pictures and videos, it does have a good amount of reviews and even citations from other local directories, and even the website links to it. It does show up for some local searches but I would like it to dominate more. I've heard that if I've built links to that Google Places local page from other sources, it would rank higher and perform better. Is that true? Any other tips and tricks to make it perform better? Thank you
