The Risks of Unrelated Guest Posts
-
Hi Mozzers!
I'm really interested to get some opinions on whether a guest post on a blog that is far outside your niche could be a risky tactic.
For example if your blog is about a technology product and you get a guest post published on an Elvis blog, will this appear manipulative or similar to a purchased link?
Suppose your guest post is about Elvis, but at the end of the article is a link to a technology product with the anchor text "customized PC adapters". Won't that look manipulative to a search engine algorithm?

I would agree with Alan on this one - user experience and relevance are paramount. I get approached by guest bloggers regularly that are outside my niche and have to turn them down, and would also be expect to be turned down if I did the same.
In a simplistic form, imagine going to a local bicycle shop that only sells bicycles, to find they had started to sell deep sea diving helmets - a cyclist would be confused, and a deep sea diver would be highly unlikely to even consider coming into the shop anyway. Regular customers would likely think the reason for the new products would simply be down to some kind of deal, rather than expanding on a related/natural niche.

Always think of user experience when deciding whether something would be a negative for SEO.
A blog post on an unrelated site wouldn't be of much value in the link aspect because it's linking totally unrelated content.
But the biggest key is why a link would exist pointing to the unrelated site at all. If the link is valid in how it describes something related to the focus of the article, it's a valid link. If it's as you describe in the second scenario, that would definitely be considered a low quality link. Especially if you use the keyword anchor text that way. That's the one that could cause the biggest red flag.
On the other hand, if the author had a box at the end of the article, or as part of the opening of the guest post, describing how that person is connected with the tech product, there's nothing wrong with linking the author's name to that tech site. Or using the name of the tech site as the anchor text.

Backlinks from The Sun, New Yor Post, etc...
Hello there, Some of my competitors have backlinks from very well-known newspaper websites like New York Post or The Sun. And it is really obvious that their backlinks are paid ones. On these news websites, they don't talk about ghost writing stuff or "partnership" for backlinks. They only write about banner advertising. So I was wondering how they can get a backlink from them.

Do some writers sell those backlinks somewhere else, under the table? Are they in contact with SEO agencies who paid them and if this is the case, does their "manager" know it? or does the company directly have partnerships with SEO agencies? Basically, how to get a backlink from the NY Post or The Sun ? Thanks0 -

Pr4 domain backlink from a blog post
I'm about to do a guest blog post on a pr4 domain. Will I be getting an actual pr4 backlink? I'm thinking since it's technically not going to be on the homepage forever since it's just a blog post and also a blog post has it's on page once you click on it I'm not going to get a pr4 backlink. Correct?

Do I ditch the link building and risk the drop?
I am currently on top of SERPS but am worried about some of the links being built by my seo company. We add loads of content to the site which I think is fine. We have somebody working on the on page and tech side of things which I think is fine. However I am still paying an seo company which basically builds links for me. Because I am in top spot for many terms I am nervous to turn it off. However I am also nervous that one day I will wake up and we will have been penalized! They do not build many links and they are convinced that google still want to see a varied link profile. If I stop paying then some of the ‘better’ or higher PR sites will no longer have a link to my site and will therefore drop off. We do have a great site with great content so I think we do many things well but I am nervous that these paid for links will be the death of me if I am not careful. The question is do I get rid of the link building and risk the drop? Or is a small amount of links just to keep the link profile looking Ok and not overdoing it the right move? Thanks a lot. Dave

Link Building Services Post Penguin
Hi Can anyone suggest a link building service that is of higher quality and still works nowadays? All the private networks were deindexed and it looks like we're left only with blasting software, which i don't really like. I am doing research on link building now and i can't seem to find any service that meets the quality of BMR or other deindexed Homepage Networks. Thanks!

Looking for services to publish articles or blog posts with everlasting links.
I'm looking for link exchanges or something like this. Where you can pick web sites or blogs and place articles with your links in there without monthly payments, but with single fee.

What is the Optimal Guest Post Byline?
Hi Moz Community! What do you think is the optimal guest post byline or bio paragraph at the end of a guest post. Is it better to link to your homepage with your site name as anchor text AND a deep page with a target keyword phrase? Or is it better to just use one link to a deep/money page on your site with a keyword phrase?

Why Post Useless Blog Comments
I notice that I'm getting a lot of spammy blog comments on a personal interest site. Why would someone go to all that trouble to get a nofollow link that will most likely not be approved?
