Meta description tag missing in crawl diagnostics
-
Each week I've been looking at my crawl diagnostics and seomoz still flags a few pages with missing meta description although they are definitely in there. Any ideas on why this would be happening?

The first thing I notice is you do have two different pages

http://www.britishhardwoods.co.uk/oak-skirtings-architraves.php/
The page with the "/" on the end is actually a different physical page. Both pages have the identical content presented differently. At a glance I would guess the page with the "/" ending is for users who view your site from a cell phone or with older browsers. Either way you need to canonicalize these pages. Right now those pages will show up as duplicate content to Google.
As to your initial post, both versions of the page do contain a proper meta description. Their length is good at around 110 characters.
I would check these pages in the crawl report for other issues. Perhaps it is getting confused. The canonical piece is a big concern which should be addressed immediately.
Good luck.

Hi Ryan,
This is the URL - http://www.britishhardwoods.co.uk/oak-skirtings-architraves.php
Really appreciate your help

That's strange as we don't currently use CMS for our site.

Can you offer an example of a page with the problem? I have a couple ideas.
Please copy/paste the URL from the crawl report instead of typing it.

The same is happening to a couple of our clients in their crawl errors. I think it must just be a bit of a bug... only happening with clients that use CMS though, not plain old HTML sites.

If you use canonicals do the meta descriptions need to be different?
For example, we have 3 different subsites with the same pages. We will put canonicals so they reference the main pages. Do the meta descriptions have to be different for each of the three pages? How does Google handle meta data when using canonicals?

Does bing accept meta name="fragment" for AJAX crawling?
I have a case in which the whole site is AJAX, the method to appease to crawlers used is <meta< span="">name="fragment" content="!"> Which is the new HTML5 PushState that Bing said it supports (At least I think it is that) This approach works for Google, but Bing isn't showing anything. Does anyone know if Bing supports this and we have to alter something or if not is there a known work around? The only other logic we have is to recognize the bing user agent and redirect to the rendered page, but we were worried that could cause some kind of cloaking penalty</meta<>

Use of Multiple Tags
Hi, I have been monitoring some of the authority sites and I noticed something with one of them. This high authority site suddenly started using multiple tags for each post. And I mean, loads of tags, not just three of four. I see that each post comes with at least 10-20 tags. And these tags don't always make sense either. Let's say there is a video for "Bourne Legacy", they list tags like bourne, bourney legacy, bourne series, bourne videos, videos, crime movies, movies, crime etc. They don't even seem to care about duplicate content issues. Let's say the movie is named The Dragon, they would inclue dragon and the-dragon in tags list and despite those two category pages(/dragon and /the-dragon) being exactly the same now, they still wouldn't mind listing both the tags underneath the article. And no they don't use canonical tag. (there isn't even a canonical meta on any page of that site) So I am curious. Do they just know they have a very high DA, they don't need to worry about duplicate content issues? or; I am missing something here? Maybe the extra tags are doing more good than harm?

Best practice: unique meta descriptions on blog 'tag' pages
Hi everyone, I'm curious, are there best practices for introducing unique meta descriptions on blog tag pages (I'm using wordpress)? For instance, using platinum seo, on an original post, the meta description is either the excerpt or a specified custom sentence. It doesn't appear that platinum seo allows for custom descriptions on tag pages. Love to hear your thoughts. Thanks! Peter

I am wondering if I should use the Meta 'Cache" tag?
I am working on removing unnecessary meta tags that have little impact on SEO and I have read so many mixed reviews about using the Meta 'Cache' tag. I need to informative information on whether or not this tag should be used.
