What is with WordPress Dupe issues?
-
Hi,
Just wondering if anyone can explain for me why it seems every tag that is entered in WP blog posts on a site creates a duplicate page (identified by ROGER and friends in SEOmoz crawl)?
Obviously if you can offer a solution (apart from the extremely obvious "don't use tags") I would be immensely grateful.
Thanks so much,
-
Good Answer and a great article on your site too! Kudos!

That's great!
I'll keep an eye out for news on the subject
thanks again,

Thank you Marcus! And I just saw your tweet. That's super awesome of you.
I'll let the owner of the site know.

You're welcome Sha.
I wish I knew Matt Mullenweg so I could ask him the same question. I plan to be at the WordPress Camp here in San Diego in July, so maybe I'll ask around and try to get to the root of why there has never been an inherent "canonical setting."
Maybe they figured Google would sort out which is the canonical (which it will). But I would much rather say what path, or what keyword anchor Google has to crawl through to get to the post.

Hey William
That's a great answer, thumbs up.

Thanks William,
I figured this was what was happening, but I suppose I imagined since it is obviously going to create duplicate content issues that the WP people would have been smart enough to make it add a canonical tag or something.
Thanks for the info on the plugin - much appreciated!

What happens when you use tags is that you create a page that is called www.your-domain.com/tag/tag-name. You also have the original blog post which is www.your-domain.com/blog-post.
They have two completely separate URLs, but they have the exact same content.
This is exacerbated when you use multiple tags because you increase the amount of chances for duplicate content to be created. And again it's even more expounded when you take into account the Categories, and Date Based Archives.
The solution is to use something like the Yoast WordPress SEO plugin and use no-index for everything that you don't want indexed. In my case I want Categories indexed, so I no-index Tags and Date Based Archives.
If you use Yoast's plugin I have put together a fairly easy article on how to initially set it up, and it is pretty helpful in understanding some of the settings. It's geared mainly for photographers running their own site, but should be just as valuable to you.
You can find it here http://www.themoderntog.com/how-to-configure-wordpress-seo-plugin-by-yoast-for-maximum-online-exposure

WordPress post indexation speed
Has anyone noticed any increases in the length of time it takes for WP posts to get indexed by Google? I have a website with the following: domain.com - CMS with lots of pages/content blog.domain.com - subdomain for the blog using WP It's odd.. the pages on the main site are indexed almost immediately. The posts on the blog are taking between 2-5 days. The blog posts are all unique content, here's an example of a recent one: blog.looksfishy.co.uk/2013/three-rivers-angling/

Http & https canonicalization issues
Howdyho I'm SEOing a daily deals site that mostly runs on https Versions. (only the home page is on http). I'm wondering what to do for canonicalization. IMO it would be easiest to run all pages on https. But the scarce resources I find are not so clear. For instance, this Youmoz blog post claims that https is only for humans, not for bots! That doesn't really apply anymore, right?

Facebook Like button issue
In looking through my top pages in Google Analytics, my #2 page (oddly enough) looked like this "/?fb_xd_fragment=". Apparently, this is because we added the Facebook Like button to many of our pages. But I'm worried these show very skewed PageView data and lower Time Spent on each page. The average time on this page is 5 seconds whereas the average sitewide time is much higher. Further, it shows 9,000 pageviews coming from only 250 Unique Visitors. I'm sure this is messing with our SEO. Is there a fix for this? Should I even be worried about it? I heard that I can remove it from my GA stat reporting, but I don't want it to be causing problems in the background. Please advise..my boss wants to keep the Facebook Like button the pages as it has brought us some good response. The page that this is on is: www.accupos.com Maybe there's an alternate version of the Facebook Like that we don't know about... I would appreciate any help on this DM

EzineArticles WordPress Plugin
Any thoughts on the EzineArticles plugin for WordPress? I read that it provides "the ability to simultaneously publish new posts to the web and submit them as articles to EzineArticles.com" Could this lead to duplicate content penalties?
