I have a page where you can download a PDF of the material - should I exclude the PDF from the search engines?
-
In my niche, there is a controversial research article that is very popular. I am writing a rebuttal to this article and giving another point of view.
My article has the potential to be really good link bait for my site.
The original article is often printed out to be shown to professionals in my niche. My hope is that people will do the same with mine. So, I plan to have a PDF version of my article available on my page. The article that is visible on my site (i.e. non PDF) will be a graphic rich article that is easy for the reader to go through. I plan to have the PDF have all of the same text, but it won't have as many graphics - it will look more like a scientific research article.
So, should I exclude the pdf from search engines so that it isn't duplicate content? Or does that even matter seeing as it is a duplicate of my own content? I want people to link to the main article, not the pdf.
Any tips would be greatly appreciated!

Thank you! This is exactly the kind of information I needed!
I was thinking contacting webmasters who published the original article to tell them about mine. But now, perhaps what I will do is not just contact them but attach a copy of the pdf for them to use.

Do not exclude.
People will link to it.
PDF documents can rank in the SERPs if you complete the properties portion of the document. The title in the properties will serve as a title tag for Google SERPs.
PDF documents can accumulate pagerank and pass that pagerank though any links in the PDF document. (Be sure to place a few links to your website in the PDF. Because....pdf, .ppt, .xls and many other file times display in my google webmaster tools backlinks).
Encourage other webmasters to download your pdf and post it on their server and link to it from their website. That will give you backlinks from their domain. You can get a kickass number of backlinks from this. (I usually don't advocate giving content away but I have seen success from "whitepapers" like this. You might consider offering them a "branded" copy of the document to post on their own site - you would add their branding for them.)
Its a good idea to lock the .pdf document so that others can't change it. They can always make their own document from your content but don't make it too easy for them.
I have used .pdfs and have not seen a duplicate content problem from them. However, the content of the pdf is not exactly the same as what is on an .html page of my site. It sounds like you are planning to have richer content on your site than in the .pdf so I would not worry about dupe content. Just be sure that there is a significant difference.

I don't think there's a problem with hosting the PDF. Just make sure you've got strong branding in the PDF and links back to your online article. People will most likely pass your PDF around to others and you want them to come visit the source --> YOU.

Followed all on-page rules no listing for target keyword :(
Hey guys, long time Moz user, first time forum asker. I recently went all out and tried to create above and beyond blog content, while also making sure to keep it SEO friendly. The page is indexed but does not show anywhere at all for the target keyword. Here is my article URL below. http://blog.storitz.com/2016/04/75-moving-tips-preparing-packing-beyond/ I checked it on the onpage ranker on MOZ and got a B. Here are some theories on maybe why it's not ranking at all. It got knocked for keyword stuffing. Although my page has tons of content and the keyword density is at a reasonable rate, I still used the keyword 22 times. Another is my wordpress automatically set my robots tag to "Noodp". Wanted to get some feedback and see if there is anything you guys might have some insight into before I start making adjustments here. Appreciate it in advanced!

How do I fix a broken link to a product category page in wordpress?
We are building a new site currently at http://67.222.109.48/~cheapnan/ I started doing some SEO after the developer I hired failed to do it even though it was in the agreement. I did our old site so I should be able to do this but I am new to wordpress. Now when i go to the products tab at the top of the page the first 2 have broken links, I checked the rest and there are 3 total that I need to fix. I am unsure how to access the navigation so I can fix the links. Please tell me where to look.

Adding too many new pages at once - will it be seen as spammy
I have a database of around 10,000 business I want to list on my directory. My problem has been that my people have been adding to the database for over a year, but due to my hosting limitations adding them, caused my site to crash. I have now got this sorted, would going from 1,000 urls listed to over 11,000 may Google think I am trying to spam them. Would it be worth while dripping them in over time, or just adding them all at once. Any advice appreciated, Thanks

Can unreliable server hurt your serps?
Hi I have a small personal blog about food and wine that I recently moved from blogger to wordpress and it is currently being hosted by the company who moved the blog over from one system to the other. This week I've noticed an 80% drop in organic traffic thanks to losing pretty much every first page SERP, there's no messages in WMT, i dont pay for links, all that's on the site is original content about food and wine that I enjoy. I've never had a previous drop in ranking/traffic like it. The one thing I can say, is that the guy who took over the hosting is hosting it himself on his own server and the website has been down more times than I would consider reasonable, often for hours at a time (this is when I catch it and I don't check often). Would the site be penalised for this? If I move servers to a reliable co i normally use, how long will it take to recover?

Where can I install a blog (not on the domain I'm optimising) which will help my search rankings?
I've got my hands tied, and I cannot install a blog like Wordpress on the domain I'm optimising. My question is, where then, would the next best place be? I've heard stories about subdomains being completely useless for affecting SEO of the root domain, and so anything external would probably have the same effect, correct? Would love to hear what some of you do in these situations. Cheers!

One Page Website Blog Content Question
Hi guys, I'm new to the art of SEO and am learning every day from all the fantastic content here, I have a question that I can't find an answer to, hope it doesn't stump you like it has me... I have a one page website (www.neilwilliamsvoiceover.com) that I need to put more content on for SEO purposes but needs to be kept as one page. I've set-up a blog via blogger, and have that on the website but it's in iframe, which I've now discovered is ignored by search engines. So, my question is, is there a way to pull my blog feed into the website and have it recognised by search engines as content for the website? Would I use an RSS feed or feed burner or something else completely?! Thanks for your time and help in advance.

FAQ page to target "long tail keywords".
I'm wondering if there is any benefit to creating a FAQ section on a website for the purpose of ranking for long tail keywords. If so, are there best practices in the way that the page is structured? Also, would doing this just help me rank the FAQ page for these terms or would it also help more critical pages on my website, such as homepage, contact, about, etc... which do not contain these keywords.

Block Low Quality Pages?
What are your thoughts on blocking (in robots.txt) and/or noindexing low-quality pages to defend against Panda, assuming you can't remove, redirect, or add quality content to it? Also, assume there are no external links pointing to these low-quality pages, no social shares, and zero incoming organic traffic. Has anyone had experience with this as a solution to Panda?
