Trying to avoid splitting Search Engine juice, need advice
-
We currently have a political issue with one microsite we're trying to promote. The group that created the website, created it without the consent of the rest of the company and now, although it's allowed to live, we've been given a few restrictions. They main restriction is that when the microsite is linked from the main corporate website it needs to be referenced as a subdomain so http://microsite.company.com. We've been promoting the site as http://www.microsite.com (I'd include the actual websites but don't want to air their dirty laundry). The problem is that a lot of the listings in google are starting to show up using the http://microsite.company.com url instead of the actual url we're about to start promoting and I'm sure that's going to split rankings. Is there a way to appease both sides here. Keep the subdomain from the main site but transfer the juice from that main link to the microsite url?
To be clear, I can't just use a 301 redirect because that will change the url from the subdomain to the microsite url (unless i'm wrong) and corporate doesn't want that.
Does any of this make sense? Any help would be greatly appreciated

Hi, I know this is an old thread but I have a similar issue. The company I'm currently working with used to have 30+ subdomains all going to different versions of the same website, many with duplicate content. This was creating 30+ different google analytics accounts to look through and all sharing the same ink juice.
Now I have come on board, I have rebuilt the website so that it is one main website with franchisee pages like www.mainsite.com/uk/franchisee-location
Now what should be the best option for the 30+ subdomains that are left? At the moment they are all pointing to their respective page on the new website but I have a developer in the team that is adamant that Google is going to penalise us for having the 30+ subdomains pointing back to urls on the main.com website. I'm not convinced as I think this is a much cleaner way and a better user experience.
My question really is, what is the best action to take with the franchisee subdomains that are out there still in the Google index? Should I keep redirecting them to their new url (www.mainsite.com/uk/frachisee-location) or should they stay as franchiseelocation.mainsite.com and will Google penalise the domain for this?
Many thanks for any advice.

Hi Kalvin, can you share with us how things are going and what you decided? Are there any nuggets you can share that might help out the next person in a similar situation, and/or do you have more questions you'd like to throw out to the group? Don't forget that you can use private Q&A with just staff members as well.

I think his problem is that the department that created the microsite.com site wants to keep it seperate and brand it independantly while the whole company wants to bring it under their umbrella so doing a sub folder wouldn't actually really work at all, I suppose you could use URL redirection to get the microsite domain to pull up for the subdirectory.
-
Unfortunately the subfolder won't work either because they are on two separate platforms.
Chris: I've leaning towards Canonical option as well but wanted to pick the brains of a few experts (like yourself) to see if that was my only option or not. Thanks.
-
Well you could always use rel=canonical to declare that the canonical version of the page is microsite.com even when you link to it from microsite. company. com.
It would help Google understand that the proper version of the site is the microsite address while leaving links from the main company site pointing and rendering at microsite .company. com.
-
Unfortunately that won't solve it because the sub group that developed the site want to promote their own url. It's all a political issue where I have to keep both types of URLs visible but get all the rankings to flow to the microsite url.
-
What you may want to consider is doing a 301 of microsite.com to microsite. company. com if that's permissible. I'm assuming that you can't just 301 the link from company.com to microsite. company. com but you may be able to do it the other way around?

Do hyphenated searches impact SEO?
Something I recently considered was whether a hyphen in a search term would effect the results that come up. For example, Is there a difference between using 'i-phone' and 'i phone' as anchor text? Some of my search results seem similar but do show some slight differences. Can anyone shed light on the matter?

Finding links online that already exist as link juice based on search results
I'm curious about this, I can't find anything on the net that talks about it. I wrote an article about it on squidoo and have had no responses so I am thinking this is very rare subject. The question is I have done some backlink research with my competitors with linkdetective.com and found many links (even follow ones) related to sites that provide search results. Here are a link about what I am talking about as an example, I have found many more besides this one. http://search.lphant.com/es/webResults.html?q=free%20scrabble%20dictionary&hl=en&page=1&src=hmp_es&ref=1 My site appears in those results. When looking at the source there is no "nofollow". I found this page because linkdetective.com had this link listed pointing to my competitor. Are these valid backlinks? What I have been doing is adding these links to http://www.google.com/addurl so that Google knows about them. Is there something I am missing or are these valid?

Searching for Quality "Follow" Back Links
I'm in a highly competitive national market where the top sites have links from between 325 and 1300 unique linking root domains, therefore, you have to have an aggressive approach just to get on the map. (I'm at 317) If we were talking about needing 50 good links, I could take the time to cultivate relationships, get to know people, and get 1 or 2 great links from each webmaster, but the scale of the challenge is out of control. My competitors, and myself, seem to all be getting links in the following ways: Hoards of directory links. Some high quality paid links from industry sites ($2,400 per each link per year) and hundreds from 9-$49 per year. At the bottom of the list of most all my competitors, there appears to be some links from their early beginnings that were reciprocal linking arrangements. Blogs where they submitted articles and have good links back to their sites. Paid ads on sites all over the internet that link back with their specific key words. Some from relevant sites, but mostly from sites that would give them a good deal and have high enough traffic and/or page rank. Blog comments with a link back to their site; sometimes with good anchor text and sometimes you're forced to have to use your web site address as the anchor text or even your name. (Does that even do any good?) My dilema is where to find 1,000 good places to get links and I don't do black hat? I can write good quality comments on blogs from a wide variety of industries, but most are now eliminating the possibility of using my anchor text other than my web site and my name. As I scour the playing field, it almost appears that it has become a "pay to play" proposition as far as getting links everywhere other than writing good blog articles, but then what good does it do to have 500 blog articles coming from a handful of linking root domains? You're just stuffing the ballot box! As for me, I'm in the teens with all the high value phrases I need and must come up with a better strategy for the home stretch. In all the other varied statistical measurements that I see on SEO Moz, I'm no lower than #5 out of the top 10 competitors in any of them except Alexa rank. So, I'm close but it seems so far away! Would appreciative and be grateful for some wisdom from the community! Lowell

Need help interpreting Ranking Factors.
Trying to see DA vs. mozrank and why things don't match the definitions given by seomoz. I'm comparing my site www.taxproblem.org w/ www.unclefed.com I have more root sites linking to me and more links. I can see that the mozrank for me is 4.96 which is higher. But their mozrank is higher. How are they more popular based on how the domains, rather than the pages link to each other. That is real confusing? Please help me understand what this means, and yes i know that right now they have better quality links, but that's not what the definition says. I'm I not understanding the definition? mozRank of the page www.unclefed.com/ mozRank shows how popular a page is on the web. The more links to a page, the more popular it becomes. Links from important pages increase your popularity, and your mozRank, even more. 4.64 out of 10 4.64 Links to the page www.unclefed.com/ The total number of links to this page, counting links from www.unclefed.com and links that don’t increase the mozRank. 606 links 2 Root domains linking to the page www.unclefed.com/ The number of different websites with links to this page. When compared to the number of links to this page, it can reveal how the links might be distributed across the web. 279 domains 5 mozRank of the subdomain www.unclefed.com Domain mozRank is a link popularity score based on how the domains, rather than just pages, link to each other. It is an indicator of a how popular www.unclefed.com is among domains 5.12 out of 10 5.12

What can be blocking the link juice?
Hey all, I recently found an issue on the website of one of my clients, so I want to hear what could be the reason for it. We are working with that client since September last year and we had created around 300 links to it. However, I recently found out using Majestic SEO and Open Site Explorer that for every page there are like 3-4 links passing value... I checked the whole report immediately, but the thing is that all links are in place and they have relevant URLs and anchortext as wel. I am thinking about an onsite issue, which can be blocking the links (I checked the robots.txt and the http header to see if they return any errors, but no luck). Any suggestions.... Any help is greatly appreciated 🙂 Best Regards
