Using overlay content on landing pages - possible? recommended?

We want to use an overlay, like a modal dialog, in a landing page to show more information to support conversion without linking to another page or using popups. Anyone have any stats on success or risks? We've considered simple roll-overs to provide some more info, but everyone has raised alarms that we may be introducing a potential technical or usability hurdle for users.
The overlay would display when someone rolled over or clicked a "Learn More" link on the page to provide additional offer reinforcement points to drive the visitors from consideration to conversion. Aside from our own testing, we don't have any sources to cite as to whether this approach can or will impact or aid conversion.
Any insights would be appreciated.

We have implemented something similar in the past with no negative effects. Same deal with tabbed content. If this type of display is convenient for the user and not only served to search engines then you're within the search engine guidelines. Even if you do get in trouble (very unlikely) there is always a re-inclusion request in which you can explain things to Google.
One thing to keep in mind is Google's cloaking filter they've been writing about this recently as they start to compare what is displayed to them to what user would see. I cannot know exactly to what extent the site may vary in appearance with your overlay feature.

Overlay / modal for product pages - bad or good for SEO?
Hi all, I am considering using full overlays/modals for an e-commerce site for all our product pages (category/listing pages will be "normal", the product page will come over the listing page as an overlay/modal when you click on the product). Those “product overlays” will also be accessible directly with own URL (if need to be linked to for ex.). All the literature I find out there treats overlays and modals as “marketing” ones (ads, sign-ups, etc.) and is generally critical to overlays when it comes to SEO, while also saying that an overlay that has to do with good UX should not hurt the SEO of our site. What do you think? Will all product pages as overlays be considered as good UX by the search engines and therefore not be negatively impacted, SEO speaking? Or should we stay clear of overlays and create “normal” product pages? Thanks in advance! Arnaud NB: The reason we want to create those overlays are for design and UX purposes, and try to increase our conversion rate.

Any possibility to track goal completions/conversions at a sub-page (non-landing page) level in Google Analytics?
We’re promoting our sub-page it's http://www.flightcentre.ca/flights/london on our homepage under the slideshow so I need to see how many people went to the homepage, then went to this page, and then converted (enquired or booked.) What I can’t see is how many people did that. I know how to look up how many people landed on that page and then converted, but I need to know how many people navigated there and then converted. Is that possible? I can only see Goal Completions if I look at that page as a landing page, but that only presents a very slim view of the total visits when compared to those pages generally. Any way to check the entire behavior or activities happening through this page i.e. /flights/london?

Have My SEO Cake & Eat It - Mix Viral Content & Business Content?
Hello, I optimize for a fashion, eCommerce site which has catalogue pages and product pages. http://www.zando.co.za/ We're currently working on a large "blog" which tons of great content designed to attract readers, links and tons of long tail traffic. We'll be doing how-to videos, celeb interviews, top-tens, etc. etc. We'll even have a UGC community section eventually. Really great. Now, I want to use the links generated by this section to rank for generics like this: For example: I want to rank for "Lingerie" and I have this page set up as the target: http://www.zando.co.za/women/clothing/lingerie/ I create some amazing content that generates lots of links containing the word "lingerie" . That awesome content lives in:(hypothetical URL:) http://www.zando.co.za/fashion/magazine/how-lingerie-has-changed-over-50-years/ I want to (and this is where you come in 😉 get people linking to my catalogue page (http://www.zando.co.za/women/clothing/lingerie/) where they can find a banner or something alluding to that piece of link bait (the /fashion/magazine/ url). Perhaps similar to the Wordpress style <read more="">page break on posts?</read> Reason is, I want my "Money-Page" to get the links with "Lingerie" in it. Problem is, it'll be another click to the thing they want to find. Also, say I decide a few months later that I want to do another piece, like "lingerie in films" and do the same. My 'banner' idea would get very crowded or, it would mean that I bump the 50-years piece, which then makes for bad UX for readers clicking through looking for the old piece. Or perhaps this can all be solved with good design? Is checkout page setup (in regards to abandonment) this sensitive?!?!
About a week ago, I added a google checkout button (which wasn't really positioned well) & option to add a note on my checkout page for my site. Over the next three days, my cart abandonment was 100%!!!!! 16 customers got to checkout, but all of them dropped out... I was starting to freak out and finally took the google button & note option down. Since then, I'm back up to about 50% abandonment. Is the ecosystem of a checkout page really this sensitive? If so, holy S#$%! Just wondering if anyone has any general advice or links for me to study up on checkout abandonment. Maybe we can get a Whiteboard Friday discussing this?

Any providers offering a/b testing using JS callbacks?
Hi all, I am looking to test the impact of buy button wording on conversion rate. The website in question has a few thousand products on non-dynamic URLs. The common a/b testing products on the market restrict tests to a single URL, or you have to enter all the URLs being tested which isn't practical. Ideal Solution What I'd really like to do is: use the provider's web app to configure an experiment with a name and a description of the variations; use some JS code to run the experiment with a callback to carry out the variation. This would allow me to easily put this code on the product details page template. I've written example code below for how this would look. When the experiment is run, the provider's framework would a) tell my code what variation to run, and b) handle the measuring of conversion rate. Questions Are there any providers which work like this? Is there an alternative solution on the market? If there isn't someone already doing this, would it be useful to anyone else?
