New website with slightly new urls
-
Hi we recently designed our website in work and changed some of the urls.
the old site used to be http://www.example.ie/contact-us.htm now it's is http://example.ie/get-in-touch
The problem we are having is with sitelinks (the ones auto generate in the serp) ie: about, contact us, team etc etc. Once cliked on, these OLD links are all going to 404 pages because of the change of url.
Help with this would be greatly appreciated - I was thinking of blocking these old sitelinks in google web master.
-
Ok Thanks guys for the information, cheers John

As John says you need to 301 redirect all your old URL's to the new URL's.
We have recently done a complete restructure of our site (the old site was very badly designed) and have had no loss in traffic or rankings. You need to make very sure that all your 301's are set up correctly (so do plenty of testing) so that you do not lose any incoming page rank from other sites.
-
But lots of these url changes were unavoidable & with new services in the company we had to alter/change some of the urls.
So what do you suggest for a redesign then? Urls must be exactly the same as previous..
-
Do not change URLs unless you have an extremely good reason and fully understand how to minimize losses of rankings, traffic, linkvalue, anchor text value, bookmarks, tweets, likes, and more.
Lots of people have lost years of link equity and a fortune of money by changing their URLs.

You need to 301 redirect all these old URLs to their new counterparts. If you just block them, people who have linked to these pages across the web will be getting 404 pages, so you'll be losing potential customers. Also, you won't be passing the Pagerank along.

URL with tracking code
Hi there, At the company i am currently working for we have a problem with shortcut url with tracking in it. They send a lot of brochures with a shortcut URL which redirects to the page of the event with tagging. For example The real URL is:
Technical SEO | | RuudHeijnen
http://www.sbo.nl/cursussen/schoolleider-primair-onderwijs/ The URL in the brochure is:
www.sbo.nl/schoolleiderpo this then redirects to: h
ttp://www.sbo.nl/cursussen/schoolleider-primair-onderwijs/?utm_source=direct&utm_medium=shortcut&utm_campaign=schoolleiderpo Now we can measure the effect of the brochure on on-line traffic and conversion. This is great but a lot of website link to that shortcut url and if the event is put offline the links to it generate an 404. We have now about 800 backlinks that generate this 404 and i want to fix it. Another big problem "i think" is the possibility that google will index this url with tagging. Now i have 2 options: 1. look at al the url with that 404 and redirect them with a 301 to the best page 2. create the shortcut on an page that is most suitable but then i will get the tagging in the URL and i guess google will see this as dublicate content. It is possible that in the future the shortcut url will be used again. What would you suggest as the best sollution.0 -
Removing pages from website
Hello all, I am fairly new to the SEOmoz community. But i am working for a company which organizes exhibitons, events and training in Holland. A lot of these events are only given ones ore twice and then we do not organise them any more because they are no longer relevant. Every event has its own few webpages which provide information about the event and are being indexed by Google. In the past we did not remove any of these events. I was looking in the CMS and saw a lot of events of 2008 and older which are being indexed. To clean the website and the CMS i am thinking of removing these pages of old events. The risk is that these pages have some links to them and are getting some traffic, so if i remove them there is a risk of losing traffic and rankings. What would be the wise thing to do? Make a folder with archive or something? Regards, Ruud

New website branding, differences between http://www and http://
Hey Mozers! We will be creating another brand pretty soon with some pretty cool interactive features and before we start development of the site I was wondering if there are any pros/cons to branding the site sans the www. For example http://example123.com and http://www.example123.com. I would much prefer to brand it has http://example123.com but I just wanted to check first to see if that would have any negative SEO ramifications. It seems that it might just be a preference as I looked at Facebook and Twitter and they both do it differently, same with Groupon and LivingSocial. Looking forward to hearing from you guys!
